ARTICLE 17.


Voted: That the sum of $345 be appropriated for the salaries of the Water Commissioners, the same to be taken from the revenues of the Water Department for the year 1944, which includes 15% additional compensation for one year .- Carried 9:14.


ARTICLE 18.


Voted: That there be raised and appropriated the sum of $48,000 for the purpose of laying a water main not less than 12" in diameter from the Great Pond Pumping Station to connect with the present 12" main on West Street at a point opposite the standpipe, and that to meet said appropriation the sum of $18,000 shall be taken from the revenue and surplus of the Water Department, and the Treasurer, with the approval of the Selection and the Water Commissioners. be and hereby is authorized to borrow the sum of $30,000 and to issue bonds or notes of the Town therefor; the said bonds or notes to be issued pursuant to the provisions of Chapter 44 of the General Laws, and to be payable in accordance with the provisions of Section 19 thereof, so that the whole loan shall be paid in not more than ten years from the date of issue of the first bond or note or at such earlier dates as the Treasurer with the approval of the Selectmen and the Water Commissioners may determine.


Voted further that the Water Commissioners shall fix sufficient rates to meet the expenses of maintaining and operating the water supply system, including the interest and the debt charges as they mature and the indebted- ness herein authorized .- 9:16.


ARTICLE 19.


Voted: To raise and appropriate the sum of $8,500 for Street Lighting. -Carried 9:16.


ARTICLE 20.


Voted: That there be included in the Tax Levy for cketricity used for street lighting the sum of $8,500 as appropriated under Article 19 of this Warrant for the 1944 Annual Town Meeting, and that said sum together with the income from the sales of electricity to private consumers, or from current supplied to municipal buildings or for Municipal Power, and from sale of appliances, and jobbing during the fiscal year, be appropriated for the use of the Municipal Light Plant, the whole to be expended under the direction and control of the Municipal Light Board, for repairs, renewals, new con- struction, and operating expenses of the plant for the present fiscal year, as defined in Section 57, Chapter 164 of the General Laws, and that. if said income shall exceed the expenses for the fiscal year, such excess shall be transferred to the Construction Fund of said plant and appropriated and used for such additions to the plant as may thereafter be authorized by the Municipal Light Board.


ARTICLE 21.


Voted: That the sun of $345 be appropriated for the salaries of the Electric Light Commissioners, the same to be taken from the revenues of the Electric Light Department for the year 1944, which includes 15% additional compensation for one year.

Braintree, Massachusetts, March 27, 1944 The adjourned Annual and Special Town Meetings were called to order at 7:55 p.m. by Moderator William F. Rogers. Town Meeting Members were checked on entering, there being 191 present.


Invocation was offered by Reverend Stanley T. Plumer of the South Congregational Church.


Mr. Fogg moved: That Articles 14, 15, 25, and 64 be taken from the table .- Carried 8:00 p.m.


Mr. Theodore E. Fogg offered the report of the Committee appointed by Mr. Anderson's motion to consider Articles 14, 15 and 64. This report is on file in the Town Clerk's Office.


Mr. Fogg moved: That the present dump on Union Street be closed.


After a lengthy discussion Mr. Palmer moved the previous question .- Carried 9:20.

ARTICLE 53.


Voted: To raise and appropriate the sum of $100 for the expenses of the Planning Board.


Mr. Chiesa offered the following resolution: That the Planning Board be authorized to study plans for the re-building of the so-called Long Block with the thought in mind that the proposed alterations shall possess, in addi- tion to the requirements of our building and safety laws, esthetic vahies .--- Carried 9:50.


ARTICLE 54.


Voted: To raise and appropriate the sum of $60.80 to meet the payment of certain bills contracted prior to January 1, 1944.


To be raised as follows:

Mr. Chiesa offered the following resolution: That it is the wish of this meeting that the Board of Selectmen file with the Finance Committee a detailed explanation of all items of unpaid bills as of January 1, 1945, in time to be printed with the Finance Committee's recommendations .- Carried.


ARTICLE 55.


Voted: To raise and appropriate the sum of $100 for the care and maintenance of property acquired by the Town under Tax Title Foreclosure procedure .- 9:51.


ARTICLE 56.


Voted: That the sum of $100,000 be used from Free Cash toward reduction of the 1944 tax rate and further authorize and direct the assessors to use any smm from Free Cash toward the reduction of the tax rate which may be necessary to carry out the expressed intent of this meeting to transfer funds of the Light Department under Article 42 in addition to any other sums voted under this Article.

ARTICLE 57.


Voted: That the Moderator appoint a Committee of nine (9) to carry on the activities started by the Post-War Public Works Committee appointed in 1943, by the Board of Selectmen, and that this Committee be authorized to secure Post-War Public Works projects from all Departments of the Town.
