NEW APPOINTMENTS, RESIGNATIONS, AND NEW ASSIGNMENTS 1945


Resignations :


VIOLET L. HAWKINS, teacher at the Winthrop School for twenty-one years, resigned in June, 1945.


FRANCES ( Ross) NORCROSS, who had been teacher in Grade II at the Winthrop School, resigned in November, 1944, to be married. She was retained on the school staff as a sub- stitute until the close of school in June.


URSULA M. LOMBARD, for three years teacher in Grade VI at the Shatswell School, resigned in June to take other employment.


ROSAMOND REILLY, who had taught in the Ipswich public schools for nineteen years, resigned in August.


ZELDA HAYES, teacher in the Ipswich public schools since 1926 and supervisor of art instruction for the past seven years, resigned in June to be married.


THELMA DAMON requested a leave of absence for one year beginning September, 1945, and was granted the same.

IPSWICH SCHOOL REPORT


HELEN F. BURGESS, who had resigned, December, 1944, to be married, continued as a substitute in her position as teacher of domestic arts until June, 1945.


ROSA LEE HAJINLIAN, teacher of commercial subjects in the High School resigned in January, 1945, to accept a posi- tion at East Bridgewater. The vacancy thus created was filled by substitutes until the close of school in June.


MURIEL (RILEY) MEYER resigned December 31, 1945, to make her home in Wisconsin.


New Appointments :


BLANCHE M. DORON, graduate of Teachers College at Salem, Class of 1942, who had taught in the Salem public schools, was engaged and assigned to Grade II at the Winthrop School.


AMY STANFORD, who had been a teacher in private schools in New York, was engaged in September and assigned to Grade V at the Shatswell School.


FRANK H. CHADBOURNE, gradaute of Boston College and Designers Art School in Boston, and formerly instructor of art at St. Johnsbury Academy, St. Johnsbury, Vermont, was ap- pointed art supervisor in September, 1945.


MARION G. MACKLIN, graduate of State Teachers College at Salem, Class of 1944, was engaged and assigned in Septem- ber to the Commercial Department at the High School.


PHYLLIS L. BEACH, graduate of the State Teachers College at Framingham, was engaged and assigned to the Domestic Arts Department at the High School.


Returned from Military Leave of Absence:


ROBERT D. CONARY, honorably discharged with the rank of Captain in the Army Air Forces in which he had served for two years, resumed his duties as instructor in the sciences at the High School in September, 1945.

MARGARET M. PHELAN, honorably discharged after two years of service in the W.A.V.E., returned to the school organization and was assigned to Grade V at the Winthrop School, October 29, 1945.


BERTRAM H. BENNETT, honorably discharged with the rank of Lieutenant (senior grade) U.S.N.R., returned to the school organization November 13, 1945. With Mr. Bennett's return the Graphic Arts Shop, serving the upper elementary grades and the High School, was reopened. This phase of the school program had been inoperative since September, 1943, because of the impossibility to secure a suitable instructor.


FREDERICK P. PICKARD and HELEN M. BROWN are, at the time of the writing of this report, still on military leave of absence.


SUMMER PLAYGROUND PROGRAM


During the summer of 1945, a summer playground pro- gram was carried on under the direction of the School Depart- ment. The program was operated for a period of ten weeks. The activities were conducted in the day time both at the Shatswell School - High School grounds and at the Linebrook playground area. This daily program was supplemented by ยท a program for older boys and girls conducted five evenings a week at the Linebrook playground. The average weekly at- tendance in these activities was 950.


Through the generosity of the Red Cross it was possible to supplement this work with a swimming instruction program conducted at the area known as Brown's Pond.


Besides the $1200 appropriated by the Town, other indi- viduals and groups contributed money, equipment, and services to make the program the more successful.


The following is a statement of the cost of operating the program and the sources of revenue used for this purpose:

GENERAL ANNOUNCEMENTS


Meetings of the Committee:


Regular meetings of the School Committee are held on the first Friday of each month at the Office of the Superinten- dent - Ipswich High School at 8:00 p.m.


Entrance Age :


No child shall be admitted to school in September unless he has reached the age of six on or before the thirty-first of March following the opening of school.


Birth Certificates :


A birth certificate is required for entrance to the first grade.


Vaccination :


No child shall be allowed to enter the first grade without a certificate of successful vaccination. Quotation from State Law, Chapter 76, Section 16: "An unvaccinated child shall not be admitted to a public school except upon presentation of a certificate like the physician's certificate required by Section 182, of Chapter 3."


Employment Certificates :


No child may be employed in any mercantile occupation until he has reached the age of sixteen years. All minors be- tween the ages of sixteen and twenty-one must procure an Employment Certificate before accepting a job in a mercan- tile occupation.


The employment certificates are issued every week-day at the office of the Superintendent of Schools.
