With the increasing demand of sanding to eliminate the slippery conditions on streets and sidewalks we were able to keep the cost of snow fall per inch down below the average cost.

The Walters Snow Fighter has been a big asset to the Town plowing out the rural roads where the small plows could not penetrate.

IPSWICH TOWN REPORT

Report of Park Commissioners

To the Citizens of Ipswich :

The Park Commissioners herewith submit their annual report :

This department proceeded along the same lines as those followed last year. The work consisted of regular mowing of all lawn areas at very close intervals, due to the abnormal rainfall during the growing season.

Money was appropriated for repairs to the two flag- staffs, but because of labor shortages it was impossible to employ skilled men for this work. The money was there- fore diverted to labor in order to keep the grass from getting out of bounds.

Tulips have again been planted in the several flower beds on the North and South greens. Due to a combination of reasons, they have been omitted from the planting pro- gram for the past three years.

An increase in the department budget is respectfully requested this year in order to meet several contingencies which have arisen. The flagstaffs, which have been ex- amined by experts, are pronounced to be in a dangerous condition and must be repaired immediately. Continual wearing where the upper and lower staffs are joined to- gether has thrown each upper staff out of line to a point where heavy storms might cause them to fall. In the Spring, two coats of paint must be applied to protect them from the weather.

237

IPSWICH TOWN REPORT

The power lawn mower, which is now nearly eleven years old must be replaced sometime during the year. Com- panies manufacturing these machines promise deliveries can be made sometime in 1946. In the meantime the old machine, which has given valiant service will have to be repaired, and be ready for further service in the early Spring.

Respectfully submitted,

C. GARDNER CAVERLY

HENRY S. BOWEN SAMUEL C. GORDON

Report of Cemetery Commissioners

To the Citizens of the Town of Ipswich :

The Cemetery Commission beg leave to submit the following report :

The unusually wet Summer and Fall, together with the shortage of help, made it impossible to keep the cemeteries in the condition we had hoped to. However, the purchase of a power mower helped greatly.

The school building was moved to the Highland Ceme- tery entrance and used for an office, storage, and work shop, and fills a long felt need. Paint, heat and shrubbery are needed to complete the job.

The terraces in the Highland Cemetery are being badly inroaded and we hope to plant at least one of them with Halls Honeysuckle, to try to stop it if we can. If success- ful, this should save considerable money in the near future and also look well.

The cemeteries and property of the cemetery depart- ment are in good condition and compare favorably with other towns.

Respectfully submitted,

FRANK R. STARKEY, Chairman ARNOLD RICHARDS

IPSWICH TOWN REPORT

Report of the Town Forest Committee

To the Honorable Board of Selectmen:

The Town Forest Committee herewith submit their annual report.

This committee reports the planting of 2000 seedling pines on town property bordering Old Right Road and the Newburyport Turnpike. This project was carried out early in the Spring under the supervision of the members of the Committee.

Not since 1941 has any planting been carried on. At that time 5000 seedlings were planted on the Water Shed property when there was a plentiful supply of help avail- able. If it had not been for the generous response from leaders of the Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts and the 4-H Club, no planting program could have taken place this year. We wish to thank both the leaders and the young people who took a part in this work for their splendid effort and civic pride in support of the town forest movement.

Respectfully submitted, C. GARDNER CAVERLY
