The above report also lists the causes of death as diversified, dis- proving the statement that has received more publicity than all the othes put together, namely, that head injuries caused 30 football deaths this year, and that these were the result of the new plastic helmet. Some fallacy to this statement can be learned from the fact that we have been using this "new type" plastic helmet for about 12 years. Incidentally, to my knowledge, we have never had a serious head injury during this period of time. Among freshmen, junior varsity and varsity teams at Memorial High School, this past season 107 boys were equipped with plastic helmets. Past experience, coupled with the fact that all the pros, and practically all the college and high school teams use the plastic helmets, leads us to believe there is nothing better. How do these alarmists who claim the record death rate this year was caused primarily by the plastic helmet explain last year's death rate? It was the lowest in history and the identical helmet was used.
The worst football injuries in the High School this past season were two dislocations, much less serious than some of our non-football acci- dents. The percentage of injuries between players and non-participants was much less, also, with only 16 insurance cases, most of which were for slight sprains and strains. The football insurance program is work-

ing out very well. Good will among the parents, the hospital, the doctors, and the school authorities more than compensates for the additional ex- pense involved.
For the first time in many years this report will not dwell on our two major problems. Much progress has been made with both. In the near future the voters will have the opportunity to provide the girls at Memorial High School with adequate physical education and athletic facilities. Also, the new athletic field at the Junior High School has passed the "talking" stage and with the cooperation of the Peirce Trus- tees is now in the process of construction.
DIVISION OF HEALTH SERVICE
Stuart A. Silliker, M.D. . Mary H. Edgerly, R.N.
School health programs throughout the country have changed sig- nificantly in scope and direction. We have entered the era of health pro- motion through education.
The school health program should be one of the most comprehen- sive services in the school. It means that the school health program should be recognized as an integral part of the total education program. Therefore, it is very important to give a school child a good start in life. A non-diagnostic screening technique is conducted by vision tests, audio- metric tests, body measurements and health appraisals on each individ- ual student.
Our health program is not only taxed with finding defects, which could handicap a child's school progress, but by following each child through until his problem is corrected or under care. Every pupil, to the limit of his capacity, should have the opportunity to develop and main- tain good physical and mental health. The school is in a unique position to assume the promotion of health through education.
The school nurse, in her role of helping to maintain health and pre- vent illness, plays an important part in helping teachers to be better in- formed and up-to-date on health needs and health problems of their stu- dents. Her role is action-oriented, because she occupies one of the cen- tral positions in a school by virtue of having many contacts with stu- dents, teachers, parents and outside sources of referral. Her duties and schedule permit her free movement within the school and throughout the community. Even with the flexibility of her schedule, the nurse can be easily reached and is accessible at all times.
Jersild, a child psychologist, points out, "the fact that physical closeness can lead to psychological closeness" is seen in the feeling of older students, who will confide in a school nurse and ask of her help and advice.

ANNUAL REPORT
The total number of children receiving school health services in- creases each year, but more significant than increase in numbers is the growth in scope of the school health program.
It is impossible to measure health activities in numbers of services rendered to pupils. The same yardstick used to evaluate educational endeavors should be used - "an informed pupil moving toward intelli- gent self-direction."
During the past year the following health activities were carried out by the school nurse.
7 Meetings attended
5 Clinics assisted at
467 Physical examinations assisted - done by the school doctor in grades 1, 3, 7, and 10. (103 done by their own doctors)
