Trustees' Report.

It is with the greatest of pleasure that we can report to you that the year just closed has been a most satisfactory one; showing conclusively the efficiency and usefulness of our library. The increase in the number of volumes loaned, over that of last year, has been very noticeable ; and the librarian has taken the greatest care in assisting children, and grown people as well, in the selection of books. A new feature has been "The Art Exhibi- tions," (of which two have already been held) and we do hope our citizens enjoyed them, for there will be several arranged for the coming year. During the summer the ladies gave an afternoon social and the proceeds added to our library the two splendid books-"Nansen's Farthest North," and "Northward Over the Great Ice." The library has received books from the government through our representative and senator, and the State has also sent us many copies of works which are of value. Magazines and books have been contributed by Mrs. Cheever, Mrs. Brewer, Mrs. Hughes, Miss Thayer, Miss C. L. Armitage, Miss Cowdrey, of Lynn, Rev J. C. Labaree, Saugus, Mr. John Parsons, of Denver, and Miss Newhall, as well as several others. Cata- logue bulletins have been received from the Brookline, Lynn, Revere and Provincetown libraries. Many works, descriptive of cities and towns have also been received. We greatly need a larger library room-our shelves are filled to overflowing and we must have more space. Something will have to be done very soon to increase the accommodation for books, to say nothing about a reading room which will soon be absolutely demanded by the patrons of the library.

The expenses of the library are constantly increasing with its growth, and an increased appropriation is needed to carry on the

work properly. No money is expended by the Town that will bring more good to a larger number. It does not seem to your trustees that a less amount than $500 and the dog tax will carry the work through the year. The library is not an experiment ; it is a necessity and ought to grow with the Town.
