Report of Chief Engineer.
To the Honorable Board of Selectmen :
I respectfully submit to you the Annual Report of the Saugus Fire Department. The department consists of four engineers, the Chief also being Superintendent of the Fire Alarm System, twenty call firemen besides the Chief and Chemical Chauffeur who are permanent men.
Apparatus.
The apparatus consists of one automobile combination kit, one hook and ladder truck, three hose wagons.
The apparatus is in good shape generally speaking with the the exception of the hook and ladder which was stated in last year's report is in very bad condition. I would advise that this apparatus be thoroughly overhauled and new ladders bought as they are creaky and old and unfit for use. The wheels are in pretty good condition, not being old, and the running gears can be put in good condition with little expense. If this is done it will be of service for quite a number of years to come and will be much better for a residential town like Saugus when its long runs and steep grades are considered than a heavier truck.
Hose.
The hose in use is in medium condition, about half is practi- cally new hose, while some of it is not worth much as it takes practically all we have to load our apparatus. I would advise the purchase of one thousand feet in order to give us a change for our chemical, so as not to be obliged to load with motor soaked hose as it only mildues and rots quickly when so packed on the apparatus.

REPORT OF FIRE DEPARTMENT.
Fire Alarms.
The fire alarm is in good condition considering the length of time some of it has been up. The East Saugus loop being nearly five miles long, has been rewired this year with No. 9 3-ply insulated wire being in most cases placed on new cross arms or brackets, also between Saugus Centre and East Saugus on new poles on the opposite side of Winter street and also on Lincoln avenue nearly all the way changed to the top of the telephone polls on the opposite of the street.
At East Saugus it has been moved somewhat to avoid trees and and other wires. One wire over the old turnpike and on Main, Central and Elm streets, has been dispensed with, and a new wire placed on the new electric light poles from Hawkes corner to Elm street and Walnut street this is also a No. 9 insulated wire placed on iron brackets. There is about 20 miles of wire remaining and most of this should be re-wired. The whole system will have to be trimmed this year, as it is badly grounded and cannot be depended on unless this is done, the North Saugus loop is working through a relay which of course overcomes this trouble to a certain extent.
Considerable old wire is still hanging and should be taken down as soon as possible.
Buildings.
The central Fire House is not in the best of condition. It will have to be reshingled this year, the ceilings on the first floor need repairing and the main floor should be built up and numer- ous other small repairs.
Heating Plant.
The old hot air furnace is practically of no use and will have to be replaced this year. I would advise a hot water or steam plant on account of the automobile apparatus.
Yours very respectfully.
CLAYTON W. REES,
Chief.
