The boys have adopted a uniform cap, marked with the initials of the name of the school, and have presented a petition to the school committee that military drill may be added to the course of instruction. Should this request be granted, I anticipate that it would have a beneficial effect, not only physically, in giving a more erect and manly bearing, not only in improving the discipline of the school, but also in making school-life more attractive to many boys, who now too soon fall out of the ranks to engage in some more immediately remunerative occupation.

The introduction of modern heating and ventilating apparatus has greatly im- proved the conditions for successful work, both by teachers and pupils.

No opportunity is given, however, for effective supervision by the principal, or for.laboratory work, while the number of teachers is the same as the number of rooms constantly occupied by pupils for study. If there are two rooms thus em. ployed there should be three teachers ; if three rooms, four teachers.

For years previous to the revision of the course of study in 1887, this school did not fit pupils for higher institutions of learning. Its graduates were obliged

32

to spend a year in further preparatory work elsewhere. Since 1887 four of our graduates have successfully passed the entrance examinations-one at the Mas- sachusetts Institute of Technology, two at Boston University and one at Smith College - and no graduate of our college preparatory course has failed to pass such examinations.

This year, for the first time since 1887, no member of any of the three upper classes is taking the college preparatory course ; consequently the classes in Greek have disappeared from our order of exercises. But in the entering class nine have · signified their intention of fitting for college, more than in all the past five years together.

I am glad to be able to commend the general diligence in work and the attain- ment made by pupils in all classes and courses in the school. Though we realize the ever unsatisfactory relation between things attempted and things accom- plished in education, even under the most favorable circumstances, yet we teach, and, we trust, pupils are learning, " not for school but for life."

EDGAR R. DOWNS, Principal.

MUSIC R. F. Raymond. WORDS E. B. Hutchins

Four bright years we 've worked together, Toward this end so sure to come, Striving ever onward, upward, In the school and in the home. While the pathway stretched before us, Long the years of study hard ! Brief, to-night, they lie behind us, Ours at last their full reward.

We must bravely meet the future, Faithfully our work must do ; Thus successfully achievement Crowns our efforts pure and true, If each hour we but remember That our thoughts and words and deeds, What we are in life's stern conflict, This alone the Master heeds.

III. REPORT OF INSTRUCTOR IN MUSIC.

MR. I. M. NORCROSS, Superintendent of Schools :

In reviewing the work of the past year, I take pleasure in saying that, with the help of the corps of faithful, conscientions teachers which the town is fortunate in possessing, the study of music has steadily progressed, and shows a marked improvement over the work of last year. The improvements may be seen in the following respects : -

Increased ability of the pupils to read new music at sight.

A better understanding of the various kinds of time.

34

A more tasteful style of performance, and in many other ways.

Special attention has been given to time-beating, with time-names, as used in the National Music Course, and thoroughness lias been aimed at in all things pertaining to the study of singing.

In regard to the question of discipline, I must repeat the remark made in my last report :

Good singing is impossible in schools where good discipline is not maintained.

The results of the constant study of music in the schools may be seen in our Sunday Schools, in our church choirs, in the various entertainments which are constantly being given, and on all occasions where the pupils take part in the singing. These good results will be more and more evident as the years pass.

ROBERT F. RAYMOND, Supervisor of Music.
