REPORT OF THE OVERSEERS OF THE POOR.

The Overseers of the Poor of the Town of Weymouth submit herewith their annual report, for the year ending Dec. 31, 1891 5 together with the Auditor's appraisal of personal property at the almshouse at that date.

ALMSHOUSE.

Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Cummings have continued in charge of the Almshouse during the past year, and the affairs of the institution have been conducted by them in a manner very satisfactory to the Overseers. Owing to the increasing cares and responsibilities that are imposed upon the matron by reason of the growing infirmities of many of the inmates of the house, consequent to advancing years, as well as to the increase in the number of inmates, we re- gret to say that her health has become so impaired as to render it necessary for her to relinquish the position which she has so long and faithfully occupied.

The resignation of Mr. and Mrs. Cummings has been tendered to the Board and by them accepted, to take effect April 1, 1892.

Numerous applications for the position when the vacancy occurs. have already been received, but it has been thought best to take no action in the matter now, but to refer the same to our successors.

The inmates of the house at this date number thirty-five, and the average for the year, including boarders and tramps, has been thirty-three, +, and being a larger number, it is thought, than were ever there before. One birth has occurred in the house and there have been four deaths, viz., Enoch Patterson, Michael Doran, Timothy Fogerty and Michael Hanley. The cost of maintainance has, owing to the increase in numbers, been considerably larger than in past years, while the receipts from sale of crops, wood eté.,

109

show some increase. The house, outbuildings and fences have been painted during the year, and the gutters on the westerly side of the house concreted, the cost of which, together with the cost of the re-insurance of the property against fire, has been charged to improvement account, the amount so charged being $595.33.

The amount of assistance rendered to poor out of the house is considerably less than usual, which is due in part to the special provision which is now made for the needy soldier and his depend- ents.

Payments to cities and towns for assistance rendered to our poor is somewhat less than last year, but the cost of supporting our in- sane patients shows an increase, with the probability of a still fur- ther increase in the future.

Drs. W. A. Drake and E. N. Mayberry have been re-appointed Town Physicians upon the same terms as last year.

The whole cost for the year for maintenance of the poor of the town has been $10,470.35 and there has been expended on account of the poor of the State, cities and towns, and for other purposes, the sum of $2,750.28, making the total expenditure on poor account for the year $13,220.63, which leaves an unexpended bal- ance in the treasury of $3,552.03 to cover the expenses of the department to April 1, 1892.

Respectfully submitted,

J. CLARENCE HOWE, HENRY A. NASH, LEONARD V. TIRRELL, JOHN P. BURRELL, GEO. H. BICKNELL,

Overseers of the Poor.
