A number of books have been purchased at the request of patrons of the library, and the Trustees are always glad to con- sider suggestions for the buying of books or for improved methods of service.

The work of mending, covering and rebinding the worn books increases with the growth of the library and forms a considerable item in the cost of its maintenance.

See Appendix A for a list of some of the more important books added during the year, including those purchased from the Susannah Hunt Stet- son Fund, also a list of books purchased from the Augustus J: Richards Fund.

READING AND REFERENCE ROOM.

Statistics of the entire use of the Reference Room are not available, but, in addition to the constant use made of the refer- ence books upon the open shelves, more than 682 books have been borrowed from the stacks to be consulted in this room.

The value of the reference work of the library is inestimable and through it much help has been given to students and others inter- ested in special lines of research, and the gratitude expressed by them for assistance rendered has encouraged the librarians, who welcome all inquiries and calls for aid and who are anxious to do their utmost to make the resources of the library available.

The following additions have been made to the reference de- partment :

Statesman's year book, 1909; Heitman's Historical register and dictionary of the United States army, 1789-1902, 2v .; Bio- graphical congressional directory, 1774 to 1903; Official con- gressional directory, 59th Cong., 2d sess., and 60th Cong., 1st

216

sess. ; Whitaker's Almanack, 1909 ; World's Almanac and ency- clopedia, 1909; Encyclopedia of missions, ed. by Dwight, Tup- per and Bliss ; Ryland's Chronological outlines of English litera- ture ; Proceedings of the annual congress of the National Prison Association of the United States, 1890, 1898, 1905, 1906.

The periodicals for which the library subscribes vary some- what from those of last year. The Arena and National have been discontinued, and the American Poultry Advocate, Collier's Weekly, Cumulative Book Index, Etude, Life, Putnam's Magazine and Christian Work (continuing the Arena) have been added. The Christian Science Monitor and Illuminating Engineer have been presented.

See Appendix C for a list of periodicals.

CLASS LIST No. 5.

Class List No. 5, which is nearly ready for the printers, will include titles of all classes of books, and with the previous lists will give a complete catalogue to the date of publication.

ART EXHIBITIONS.

16 groups of pictures from the Library Art Club have been exhibited in the Reading Room and comprised the following : Millet ; Rise of Sculpture, No. 1; Rise of Sculpture, No. 2; Italian Art, No. 1; Italian Art, No. 2; Southern Coast of Eng- land ; Mexico; Rome, No. 2, pt. 1; Rome No. 2, pt. 2; Walter Crane, No. 1; Shakespeare, No. 1; Scotland, No. 1 ; Mythology ; Florence, No. 3; Amesbury ; Up the Rhine.

GIFTS.

Public documents have been received ; and annual reports, bulletins and other publications have come from 48 libraries, be- sides books and pamphlets from other donors.

A valuable collection of books has been presented by Mrs. Maria T. Willey from the libraries of her husband, Henry Willey, and her son, Theodore P. Willey. This collection includes works in the Greek, Latin, French, German, Swedish and Hawaiian lan- guages with some ancient editions not easily duplicated.

A beautiful rubber plant, which is in the Reading Room, has been presented to the library by Miss Annie F. Loud.

The Trustees hereby make grateful acknowledgment to the donors, a list of whom is given in Appendix D.

See Appendix B for the list of books presented by Mrs. Maria T. Willey.

A new carpet has been laid in the hall and through the Delivery and Reading Rooms and the Trustees take pleasure in reporting the improvement in the lighting of the rooms made by substituting tungsten lamps for the old chandeliers. This change has elicited much favorable comment from visitors to the library and made easier the evening work of the librarian and her assistants, at the same time adding to the artistic effect of the rooms. Aside from these advantages the appreciable decrease in the cost of lighting is gratifying to the Trustees and seems to justify the expense incurred.

Other repairs and improvements are still necessary. The Trus- tees have previously called the attention of the voters to the fact that a floor in the hall over the library was much needed, as the number of books and magazines placed there is constantly in- creasing. All the dirt that accumulates goes through upon the ceiling below, and if this is not remedied before long the town will have to go to a much larger expense in replacing the ceiling of the library. It is also important, to avoid the liability of acci- dent, that the stairway should have a much needed protection. Consequently the Trustees earnestly recommend that these im- provements be made.

CLARENCE P. WHITTLE, By order and in behalf of the Trustees.
