SCHOOL ACCOMMODATIONS.
I have heard considerable comment to the effect that the new school building in South Weymouth is larger than is necessary and that a smaller building would have served the purpose. As a matter of fact when the building is opened we shall have an average of over thirty-four pupils per room if we use every room in the building, which is as large a number as any teacher ought to have under her charge. This statement perhaps will dispose of the rumors that the Pond and Hollis Schools will be closed, also that the Shaw School will be treated in the same manner.
It would be, however, to the distinct advantage of both the Shaw and Pratt Schools if the ninth grades could be transferred, leaving eight grades in each of the buildings. That would leave two grades for each of the teachers. As it
r
140
is, at the present time in each of these buildings, we have to place three grades in one of the rooms, which always gives crowded conditions. Miss Long at the Pratt School has forty-nine pupils in three grades and would have had fifty- five if six had not been given special promotions to the seventh grade in order to bring the number in the room be- low fifty.
It will be necessary to have additional accommodations in Ward 1 in the near future. There are four hundred sixty- eight pupils in the Athens School with a prospect of more with the continued development of the Fore River Plant. I do not see how we can avoid placing the children in the lower grades of this building on half time next year.
In conclusion I wish to thank the committee, the teachers and the community for their cordial support during the year.
Respectfully submitted, PARKER T. PEARSON,
Superintendent of Schools.

ODE TO CLASS OF 1917.
Words by EDWARD WHITE FEARING. Music by ELSIE DEANE MONROE.
All garlanded with flowers And full of joyous song, June brings us pleasant memories That bind us fast and strong To scenes now grown familiar, To friends we've learned to know In the fellowship of study, Since four short years ago.
Far off on the horizon, There shines a mellow light ;
Our loadstar, Hope, is shedding Its rays across the night ; And following its guidance, We'll Duty's call obey ; For steadily she calleth, "Go forth upon your way !"
Still we are loath to sever Ties of affection dear, Or lose one recollection Of those we cherish here.
But since the curfew's tolling For these school days a knell, To thee, dear Alma Mater, We bid a fond farewell.
