Total amount of vouchers, $540 53
This leaves a balance of $218.01 for which no vouchers are furnished, other than the book from which these facts are gathered, and which has been kept in such a manner that we find it impossible to make up any accurate statement from it, except to say that a portion of this amount has been cred- ited upon various store bills, for butter, eggs, produce, &c., and the balance disbursed by the Superintendent in various small cash amounts, the record of which is found upon his book, but so mingled with other purchases which have been settled by bills rendered, that we cannot state the exact amount.
144 AUDITORS' FINAL STATEMENT.
The Auditors herewith present to the town the annual re- ports of its various town officers, and would certify that we have examined all bills which have been paid by Selectmen's orders on the Treasurer, as exhibited in condensed form from Page 29 to Page 62 in this report ; also, that we have ex- amined the accounts of Treasurer, Collector, and Treasurer of Beebe Town Library, and find them correct and properly vouched for.
The report of the Overseers of the Poor was delayed so long that we found it impossible to properly examine it, be- fore passing to the printer, and therefore cannot vouch for its correctness. We have given however elsewhere in the report, complete lists of the disbursements in this depart- ment, as taken from the vouchers passed to our hands, which may be found as follows, viz. :
Bills paid by Selectmen's orders, Page 35, . $6,006 14
66 66 " T. E. Balch, Treas. of Board, Page 139 321 37 66 " J. C. Rounds, keeper, Page 142 . 758 54
Total,
$7,086 05
These amounts do not agree with the Recapitulation as given by the Overseers in their report, and it would seem that some error must have been made by them in the sepa- ration and itemizing of their expenditures under the various
ES headings. There appear also to be inaccuracies in the re- ceipts at the farm, as compared with the facts as taken from the keeper's book (see Page 141).
The few transactions of the old Board of Overseers during March of last year, not being included in the report of this year, we state them as follows :
145
Balance in hands of Overseers as per report, $33 74
Of this amount there was in the hands of Joseph
Tuttle, Superintendent, which was allowed in settlement with him, 5 40
Balance as shown by books of C. N. White, $28 34
Received from the town of North Reading, 8 00
Total, Expended as follows :
$36 34
Paid H. Sweetser, sawing wood, 62
C. B. Deming, furniture, 5 00
Abbie E. Oliver, aid, . 20 00 25 62
Balance transferred to Overseers of this year, $10 72 The balances in hands of Highway Surveyors as given in last year's report have been disposed of as follows : J. A. Tyler, Surveyor, West District.
Balance reported, 13 21
Paid to Town Treasurer,
13 21
J. J. Mansfield, Surveyor, East District.
Balance reported,
$14 05
Expended, 1 57
Paid to Treasurer,
12 48 14 05
B. F. Shedd, Surveyor, North District.
Amount drawn by him Feb. 27, 1880, and by error not included in statement of last year, $50 00
Paid balance due him as per report, . 8 34
Expended during March, 1880, 9 77
Balance refunded to Town Treasurer, 31 89
50 00
Errors occur in the report as follows : Page 24, the vote of Selwyn Z. Bowman for Representative in Congress should be 627 instead of 427.
Page 21 in the action under Art. 52 the word " not " should be inserted after the word " instructed " in the sec- ond line.
T. J. SKINNER, E. E. EMERSON, Auditors. W. S. GREENOUGH.
WAKEFIELD, March 25th, 1881.
Since writing the above Statement, the Board of Overseers have withdrawn their report for correction, and will report in print, separately, on or before the annual meeting.
