But under the direction of wise management substantial and imposing brick edifices with increased capacity have arisen, phoenix-like, from the ashes of those wooden structures, have been furnished with improved appliances, and now throng with busy workmen.

A new industry has been introduced which promises to add largely to our population, and to utilize property that has hitherto remained unproductive.

Other evidences of thrift may be seen in the stores, facto- ries and shops, and more noticeably in the homes, which cannot be surpassed in neat and comfortable appointments by those of any other town in our Commonwealth.

CONCLUSION.

The occupants of these stores, factories, shops and homes are the patrons of the Library, and in view of the facts above stated, and that we may keep pace with these accessions to our population and wealth, and that the Library may continue to be one of the attractive features of our town, we recom- mend to the voters of Wakefield an appropriation of four hundred dollars, and the dog-tax now in the hands of the Town Treasurer, for its support the ensuing year.

LUCIUS BEEBE, Chairman.

AUDITORS' FINAL STATEMENT.

In fulfilment of our duties we again present to the town the annual reports of its officers, and certify that the accounts of such officers as have had charge of the collection or ex- penditure of moneys, have been examined by us, and that they are now correct and properly vouched for.

The funds as reported in hands of the Treasurer of the School Committee as stated upon-Page 58, has been applied upon the bill of Mr. George Packard referred to upon Page 57.

The cash balance in hands of J. C. Rounds; keeper at the Almshouse, as per report of the Overseers of the Poor of last year, seems not to be accounted for either in the Re- port of the Overseers of this year, or as having been re- turned to the Town Treasurer. We understand that Mr. Rounds disputes the balance as reported, claiming that the statement then made was not correct.

A few slight errors have occurred in printing, which, al- though unimportant, we refer to as follows, viz. : An error of $1.00 in Treasurer's Report, Page 89, in connection with. the State School Fund paid to the School Committee, and in .. the Town Debt Statement, Pages 90 and 91, the cents in the " Total Liabilities " should be 38 instead of 63.

T. J. SKINNER, E. E. EMERSON, L Auditors.
