The Walton School has acquired a 21 inch television set for receiving Educational Television in the classroom, and plans for the purchase of sets for the Warren and W. Ward Schools are nearing completion.

Art, Helen E. Corbet

In the elementary school years children must build up a background of all kinds of information and experiences. This background is particu- larly needed in the art work.

Creative expression comes only when the child has something to say. He must be allowed to explore many materials, to find the ones which he prefers to use properly to carry out his thought. He must become aware of fine qualities so he can appreciate his own good work and the work of others. The teacher has guided and encouraged him. Evaluation by teacher and pupil has helped him progress.

In the fall the elementary teachers received an expanded art curric- ulum guide which set forth the aims, skills, and habits, and the abilities which might be expected at each grade level. A list of art media was in- cluded with ways of preparation and suggestions for development of les- sons in which they could be used. Other bulletins were issued during the year with information on various techniques.

We have correlated with other subjects in the curriculum. When good speech with its contributing factors was the major concern of all ele- mentary grades, we made posters emphasizing various aspects such as: good posture, proper clothing, and correction of speech errors.

We decorated the auditorium of the Dolbeare School for the April Book Fair, combining the work of many children from most of the elementary schools.

Physical Education, Earle W. Crompton, Director

Physical education is a vital and necessary part of the educational process. Good health and the acquiring of the necessary tools to become a happy and successful citizen are often listed as educational objectives .. ..

TOWN OF WAKEFIELD

In line with recommendations of the Presidents' Council for Physical Fitness, we have tested most of our students for minimum fitness. Using the same Kraus Webber tests as used nation wide, we found as follow:

Approximately 60% of our elementary students failed

Approximately 50% of our junior high students failed

Approximately 18% of our high school students failed

This is far above the national average, but still leaves us with some 1,300 students who cannot meet the requirement for minimum physical fitness. The above figures tend to show that our elementary program is insufficient. We firmly believe we need another teacher to help instruct in the 86 classrooms at the grade school level (Grades 1-6).

The high school physical education has a maximum of students partici- pating in each intramural sport.

The regular physical education program consisted of test and measure- ments, correctives, wrestling, boxing, gymnastics, games, tumbling, and body building exercises for boys.

The girls have rhythm exercises, gymnastics, skill games, badminton, tumbling, and tests, and measurements.

In the inter-scholastic athletic field, we are at an operating level. Our main concern, now, is locker room space in the high school as track and baseball, cross-country, and football, leave us with a need of 12 more large lockers. In closing I would summarize by saying that our Physical Educa- tion Department is in good shape, with very fine instructors doing an ex- cellent job. Growing pains are our main problem.

Health, Dr. Sigmund J. Szydlowski

During the year of 1957 there were 1,401 complete physical examina- tions done at the various schools. This included all 1st, 4th, 7th and 10th grade students and all new students entered during the year. There were 57 mothers present at the examination of the first and fourth grade pupils.

Of the pupils examined 599 were found to have one or more defects. The following defects were noted:

5 emotional or social adjustment problems

182 nutritional problems noted

302 needed dental care

31 had cardiac disorders

74 had ear, nose, or throat disorders

19 had poor posture

12 had flat feet

18 genital defects noted

7 had high blood pressure

13 skin conditions noted

81 other miscellaneous conditions noted

There were 457 physical examinations done on boys before they par- ticipated in sports.

Mrs. O'Brien made 82 home visits during the year and gave first aid to 454 pupils. Of these she took 142 home, 9 to the hospital, and 7 to the family physician.

57

146TH ANNUAL REPORT

Mrs. Adams took care of 2,496 visits to the high school health room and 1,523 visits to the junior high school health room. She dismissed 1,031 pupils and handled 58 accidents in the high school and she dismissed 524 pupils and gave first aid to 35 accidents at the junior high school. The high number of dismissals was greatly due to the prevalence of the "Asian" flu during the fall of the year.

Tuberculin Patch Tests were done on all student cafeteria workers at the beginning of the school year.

All pupils as in the past have each been given a sight and a hearing test and those failing either test have been given a report of their failure.

Major Repairs and Improvements-1957

Senior High-Athletic Field

The permanent bleachers on the east side, and the fence on the north side were painted.

Junior High School

The second floor locker room was converted into a classroom which included painting, installing new tile flooring and rebuilding the corridor wall. Room 308 was divided by a partition, giving us two classrooms in- stead of one.

We replaced 250 of the old lockers with new steel lockers. The re- lighting and re-wiring of the entire building, begun in 1956, was completed. The library floor was sanded and refinished, and seventy additional desk and chair units were purchased.

Elementary Schools

Three rooms of new furniture replaced old units at the Greenwood School. Three rooms of new furniture replaced old units at the Franklin School. Asphalt tile floors were installed for one room at the Greenwood School and for two rooms at the Franklin School. One room at the Frank- lin School and one room at the Greenwood School had the floors sanded and refinished. Stair treads on one staircase at the Franklin School were refinished. The interior of the Woodville School and the exterior of the Franklin School were painted. All window sash on the second floor of the Lincoln School was replaced. Both chimneys at the Warren School were repointed. Toilet facilities were provided in the classroom in the special class for trainable children at the Franklin School.
