ANNUAL REPORT
January 1, 1955, through December 31, 1955
LIBRARIAN'S REPORT
TO THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES OF THE MILLICENT LIBRARY
The end of the year is traditionally the time to review the things we ought to have done and the things that we ought not to have done. In the 1954 Annual Report we dedicated ourselves to the task of expanding the library service in the direction of the areas in Fairhaven that find the library inac- cessible. Many people must be represented there, as again we find that only 25 per cent of the population are making use of our facilities.
East Fairhaven and Sconticut Neck would find it as difficult to share a branch library, if one could be found, as to get to the main library. Many residents of North Fairhaven find the Oxford Branch Library inconvenient to reach.
The additional services which this library and all other libraries offer - classroom collections in all the elementary schools, small collections loaned to the Homes (King's Daugh- ters and Our Lady's Haven) are for use in these schools and institutions only and are meant to supplement books which are already available at the main library.
The problem of serving adequately a population of 13,395 distributed over an area of 11.7 square miles has a very obvious solution, but one which we never hoped to be able to provide until we received the following letter from Mrs. Philip E. Young late in December:
December 28, 1955.
To the Trustees of the Millicent Library:
I have been given to understand that your Board feels that the activities of the Millicent Library, and its service to all the people of Fairhaven, could be greatly increased if the Library had available a Book- mobile of the type now approved by the American Library Association already in use in many of the cities and towns throughout the country.
Therefore I am very glad to write you that I will give to the Millicent Library a sum for the purchase

of a Bookmobile in memory of my husband, Philip E. Young.
We have lived here since 1910 and Mr. Young and I have always been much attached to this town and interested in its growth. I feel he would have ap- proved very much my doing this in his name.
Enclosed please find a check made out to the Mil- licent Library in the amount of $5,000.00 and in the coming year I will provide whatever amount is neces- sary to be used to acquire a suitable and proper Book- mobile, not to exceed $10,000.00.
Yours truly, (Signed) EDITH B. YOUNG (Mrs. Philip E. Young)
Besides the generosity and unselfishness of this act, Mrs. Young has chosen a most appropriate and satisfying monu- ment to a man who was noted for his great public spirit. The gratitude that goes to Mrs. Young from the library Trustees, the staff, and the people of Fairhaven is deeper than can be said at the moment, and will increase daily as her marvelous gift is put to use.
Book Supply and Demand
We slightly exceeded our excellent circulation figures of 1954 by issuing 78,790 volumes in 1955. 1,937 volumes were added to our collection and 2,814 withdrawn, making our book stock 47,055 volumes in all.
Our collection is constantly being checked for books which need to be cleaned, repaired, or discarded. Binding costs are so high that only a very small percentage of needy books can be sent. Fortunately for us, Mrs. Hewitt has demonstrated an adeptness at book repair, thereby saving us considerable money and at the same time keeping the appearance of the shelves neat and clean.
Miss Pillsbury catalogued 2,018 books - 186 more than last year. We added 106 new books to our School Collection and 134 to the new Teen Shelves.
We have more borrowers than we have had for the last 14 years - 3,382 in all. 1,131 registered with us during 1955.

Library Activities
Work with the schools consisted of the regular semi-an- nual visits to grades 1 -7 by Mrs. Schmidt and the Librarian and the visits of the seventh grade pupils to the library in April. 4,099 volumes were sent out in the classroom library collections.
Summer story hours were held every Wednesday morning from June 29th through August 10th. At that time we felt that it would be wise to discontinue this activity because of the serious polio epidemic in the area. As a result of this curtailment we had a total attendance of only 1,380 children at these sessions during the entire summer.
Miss Beatrice Mosgrove volunteered her services each Wednesday morning and did a marvelous job keeping the children entertained until the stories began. She also con- ducted one of the story hours, as did Mrs. Joseph Rogers, Mrs. Harold E. Kerwin, Mrs. Ellen Rex, Mrs. William H. Rapp, and Miss Margaret Jackson.
Every summer the library organizes a reading club for the children. This summer the theme was yachting, and the club was named the Millicent Regatta. Each contestant received a sailboat that was entered in the race which pro- gressed from buoy to buoy. The winners were: Grade 4: 1st prize, Carol Ann Hesketh, who read 87 books - more than any other club member; Grade 6: 1st prize, Charlotte Lawton, 2nd prize, Susan Jackson; Grade 7: 1st prize Eileen Monteiro.
Before an audinece of 117 on Saturday morning, November 19th, at the special Story Hour during Book Week, the book prizes were awarded to the winners of the summer reading club Regatta.
During the week the schools were visited and an Open House was held which proved to be very festive, with eggnog and delectables as refreshments.
Interior Decoration
One of the major changes that we made this year was converting the Reading Room into a Reading-Reference Room. Purchasing two counter-height book cases which we installed at the farther end of the room and making use of the other wall cases constructed the preceding year, we succeeded in

locating the complete reference collection more conveniently for general use. The curved end of the room, which is now separated from the main room by the new cases, is available as an alcove for those who wish to read and relax.
The tables and chairs in the room were rearranged so that more space would be made available. A new newspaper rack and magazine rack were assembled and decorated by Mr. Boucher.
The section in the book stacks where the Reference Collec- tion was formerly located is now called the Teen Alcove and here can be found books with a special appeal for young people. The Teen Corner, which holds the newest books for teen-agers, was equipped with a new light.
The book stacks in the Children's Room were rear- ranged so that one section is devoted to the little people up to the third grade and another to youngsters of grades 3 - 5. The books in the cases against the walls are for children in grades 6 - 8. Two old round oak dining tables, donated by Miss Mabel L. Potter and Miss Ruth Barnes, were refinished by Mr. Boucher and fitted with wrought-iron legs. They now serve as reading tables in the Children's Room.
Two lights were installed to give better visibility in the work area at the rear of the library, and two peg bulletin boards were made by the janitor for the main Reading Room and the Children's Room.
