First and Second Grade Chorus - Oxford School

FAIRHAVEN PUBLIC SCHOOL MUSIC

I. VOCAL MUSIC

Vocal Music is taught in all grades of the elementary schools and is offered on an elective basis in the high school. It helps children develop socially, opens the door of opportunity to many, provides individual enjoyment, and improves the personality.

Vocal music begins in the first grade with simple rote songs, develops through the grades to include skill in the use of notation, skill in listening, and skill in the rendition of good music.

Singing for school assemblies, PTAs, and other pro- grams is the natural outcome of children's training, inter- est, and ability. Some groups are formed in the separate elementary schools. There has been a large Eighth Grade Chorus this year as well as a more selective Eighth Grade Choir.

The High School groups become still more selective with a Girls' Glee Club, Girls' Trio, Male Quartette, High School Double Quartette, High School Choristers, and in- dividual soloists.

The work is directed by the Supervisor of Vocal Music assisted by many teachers. The Parents' Music Club has helped considerably to make the music program successful.

Music throughout the Fairhaven Public Schools is pro- viding experiences which are valuable to the children. The training of the present should continue to be beneficial to them in the future.

II. INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC

From its inception in 1921, Fairhaven School instru- mental music has progressed slowly and steadily. Each elementary school now has a rhythm band and school or- chestra. Most schools have little symphonies for those making transition from rhythm to regulation instruments. Once a month all elementary orchestral groups, number-

ing about one hundred this year, meet for a combined rehearsal at the Tripp School.

Lessons, paid for by the pupils, have been arranged for violin, viola, violoncello, string bass, flute, oboe, clar- inet, saxophone, hassoon, trumpet, or cornet, horn, bari- tone, trombone, tuba, and percussion instruments. An in- strumental loan fund assists pupils in the purchase of in- struments.

Instrumentalists in Grades Eight and Nine enter Jun- ior Band and Orchestra. They are then tested for mem- bership in the Senior Groups. The High School Marching Band now numbers sixty. These groups participate in school and community functions.

Development of small ensembles is a vital part of successful school music. Several elementary groups are now practicing under supervision. In high school the small ensembles practice independently and frequently take part in community programs.

A summer music plan permits students to continue les- sons and ensemble playing for six weeks during June and July. The Senior Band continues rehearsals during the entire summer and presents concerts in Cushman Park on Tuesday evenings during July and August.

Tribute should be paid to two service groups who have supported the school music program during the years. The American Legion, Fairhaven Post 166 has helped the High School Band through the purchase of instruments and uniforms, and has helped on band trips. The newly or- ganized Music Parents Club has actively supported our projects with untiring effort and interest.

Foot note :

Special thanks to the Standard-Times for both the vocal and instru- mental group pictures which are used in this 1955 annual report and to Miss Elizabeth Hastings and Mrs. Marguerite Johnson for their untiring effort in getting the children together.

Cover design by Milton K. Delano depicting "Music is the universal language" in collaboration with Kenneth R. Vining.
