Present at the exercises were several members of the Class of 1902 with Mr. Will A. Charles who was Principal when they graduated. Mr. Samuel F. Bumpus, President of the Class presented $55.00 to the school for the purchase of a new microphone.
The gift from the class of 1957 was the sum of $100.00 to be used for new trophy cases.
CROWDED CLASS ROOMS
Classes have increased in size to such a degree that many teachers have abnormally heavy loads. For example, one teacher meets 185 pupils a day, another 179, and another 174 with additional classes twice a week. This is much too high when compared with a normal load of about 125. I recommend, therefore, that at least two more teachers be added to the high school staff for September 1958. The com- ing transfer of the eighth grade to the new Junior High School will give some relief but it will leave us with more pupils in grades 9 to 12 than we can handle comfortably.
120
MATHEMATICS AND SCIENCE
Since the first man-made moon began to swing through its orbit, there have been people who have asserted that the schools in this country were neglecting the teaching of science and mathematics. So far as Fairhaven High School is concerned, a program was begun several years ago under the leadership of Mr. Robert C. Lawton, Head of the Mathe- matics Department, to increase and improve our mathe- matics courses. This year 72% of our pupils are in regular mathematics classes and 18% more are in bookkeeping classes using arithmetic every day.
Our courses in science include elementary science, general science, biology, chemistry, and physics, and 65% of our pupils are enrolled in these classes. We have excellent text- books and capable teachers. The equipment is good but frequent replacements and additions should be made. It would be well if we could do more laboratory work, but only a limited amount can be attempted while classes are crowded and time is limited.
FOREIGN EXCHANGE STUDENTS
Last summer Ellen Mahoney of the Class of 1958 spent two months in Spain under the American Field Service pro- gram. Rudolf Merten from Austria is a member of our senior class this year. The annual exchange of hundreds of young students under the A.F.S. plan is building inter- national understanding at a time when it is greatly needed.
GUIDANCE
Guidance continues to be a very important part of secondary education. In a school as large as ours the Director of Guidance should have clerical assistance so that the Director's time can be used to the best advantage. An additional clerk should be made available for use in the of- fices of the Guidance Director and the Principal.
LIBRARY
In a day when many things are offered as substitutes for the fine art of reading, it is gratifying to find that our stu- dents are borrowing books from the library in greater num- bers than ever before.
CONCLUSION
Some schools in foreign countries that are held up by critics as models for Americans to copy concentrate on train-
121
ing the minds of a selected and competent group of students. The philosophy behind public education in the United States, on the other hand, has been a desire to do as much as pos- sible for all the children of all the people. Here is a noble experiment if there ever was one and the graduates of our schools have caused our country to prosper.
We have a loyal, competent faculty willing to work hard and interested in the young people in their care. In class room and conference room, in athletic contests and in musi- cal performances, in clubs and in student council young people are learning valuable lessons.
We appreciate the help that comes from parents, from school committeemen, and from the superintendent. We ap- preciate the improvement of salary schedules, and we ap- preciate the townspeople who take a real interest in the schools. If it were not for these, the work of the schools could not succeed.
Respectfully submitted, CHESTER M. DOWNING Principal

Report of the School Nurse and Supervisor of Attendance
To the Superintendent of Schools:
I present herewith my fifteenth annual report as school nurse.
Clinics for diphtheria, whooping cough, tetanus and Salk polio vaccine were held under the auspices of the Board of Health. First, second, and third shots of Salk vaccine were given, a total of 2412 doses. The eye and ear examinations were given as usual. We are fortunate in hav- ing our own audiometer now, a Belltone audiometer, given to us in June by the P.T.A.'s of the five elementary schools. The nurse has also assisted with cases referred to the Bristol County Mental Health Clinic.
Attendance cases are few that do not involve health. Three cases of excessive absence were taken up with the probation officer and two habitual school offenders were prosecuted in the Juvenile Court.
School enrollment has been increasing each year and has long since reached the point which is too great for one nurse. A second nurse should be employed in order to provide the proper service.
