Che Millicent Library
Fairhaven, Massachusetts
ANNUAL REPORT January 1, 1957 through December 31, 1957
BOOK MOBILE
A MEURENT LIBRARY BOOKMOBILE
FAIRMAVEN, MASSACHUSET'S
Librarian's Report TO THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES OF THE MILLICENT LIBRARY
Surprising though it seems, it is once again time to "note with approval" and "view with alarm." Fortunately, we have occasion to concern ourselves mostly with the former cate- gory, and it will perhaps be well to start off on a cheerful note.
The Millicent Library Bookmobile
It was with great satisfaction that on March twelfth the library instituted its bookmobile service. In order to serve North Fairhaven, East Fairhaven, and Sconticut Neck adequately, there have had to be adjustments in the schedule, but the response in these areas has been gratifying and we attribute our 12% rise in circulation to this added facility. The staff and the donor of the bookmobile realize the enormous potential in this service and are pleased with the warm reception which has greeted our efforts.
Book Supply and Demand
Our book circulation of 84,841 was 9,209 more than last year. We issued 613 new adult library cards and 500 new juvenile cards, making a total of 1,113. Our total number of borrowers registered is 4,875, or 36% of the town's popu- lation.
1,757 books were added to our collection, 507 withdrawn, which gives us the total of 48,921 books in the library. 1,726 books were cataloged, 140 new titles added to the Teen Section, and 34 new titles added to the School Collection.
Trustees and Staff
During 1957 the library lost two very valuable members of its Board of Trustees, both of whom were held in de- servedly high esteem. In August, Mr. Stuart M. Briggs passed away, leaving a gap that will be difficult to fill. He had served as a trustee for six years, four of these as Chair- man of the Board.

In October, Mr. Elwyn G. Campbell died. A trustee for fifteen years, Mr. Campbell put his years of experience in the field of education to excellent use in this post and clearly understood our aims and obligations as an educa- tional institution at all times.
Miss Avis M. Pillsbury resigned as part-time cataloger in June. In recognition of her twenty-nine years with The Millicent Library, twenty-five of them as Librarian, the trustees tendered Miss Pillsbury a reception and presented her with a purse of money.
Mr. Henry Rogers Benjamin, one of the most esteemed of our trustees, paid a visit of a few days to Fairhaven early in June. Although Mr. Benjamin has been unable during past years to play as active a role as he would have wished because of his residence in New York, he has always mani- fested a great interest in the doings of the library. During this particular stay we were pleased to welcome Mr. Benjamin on visits to the library more than once, and he was able to be present at the reception for Miss Pillsbury.
Mr. Albin Silva ended his association with the library when the Oxford Branch Library was replaced by the book- mobile. He served forty years as Branch Librarian and was given a gift by the Board of Trustees as a token of their appreciation of the years he devoted to the people of North Fairhaven in this capacity.
In June we were fortunate in obtaining the services of Mrs. George Freitas, a former employee of the library, who has come to us as Extension Librarian. Her main duties con- sist of being the Librarian for the bookmobile.
Children's Program
Fairhaven children, as well as adults, were privileged to hear a talk by Mr. Godfrey Wicksteed, then First Mate of Mayflower II, when he visited the Millicent Library on June the twenty-sixth. He showed slides and film strips of the building of the vessel and left a piece of the wood of which the Mayflower II was constructed as a remembrance of the event.
The following week Mrs. Joseph Rogers gave a graphic account of her safari in Africa and showed the children some carved animals and a leopard skin.
For the rest of the summer Wednesday morning story hours, we featured Mr. Earle D. Wilson of the Standard- Times, who performed magic tricks for the children; Mrs. Harold E. Kerwin and Mrs. Harold B. Dutton, who told
192
stories; Miss Dorothy Reynolds from the Dairy Council of New Bedford, who showed films and also loaned us her movie equipment on two occasions. Our sessions this sum- mer were attended by 1,322 children.
During Book Week in November a film of the Grand Canyon and two Woody Woodpecker cartoons were viewed by 340 children.
Gifts
An oil painting of Yosemite by an artist named Hill, as well as some extremely decorative vases, were presented to the library by the Dana Estate. A considerable number of books from Miss Dana's home were sent to the library also. Following are other donors of books during 1957: Mrs. Otto F. A. Arnold, Ruth Barnes, Alveric J. Bellenoit, Robert Boucher, William Briggs, Mrs. John B. DeGraw, Earl J. Dias, Estate of Mrs. Mabel Dudgeon, Fairhaven High School, John Keary, Joseph Laronda, League of Women Voters of Fairhaven, Mrs. A. C. Neagus, Jr., Alton B. Paull, Alfred L. Poisson, Rita E. Steele, Mrs. John B. Tillson, Ellsworth B. Tolman, Milton A. Travers, Radio Station WBSM, and Mrs. Bancroft Winsor. Mrs Winsor and Mrs. John Seaman presented the library with periodicals.
It might be appropriate here to thank the Standard-Times and WBSM for the many courtesies that they have extended to us. Mrs. Olive L. Brown also deserves our gratitude for having kept our exhibit case filled throughouth the year.
Innovations
The window trim outside the library was painted this year. Inside the building the Children's Room took on a friendlier atmosphere with new Moby Dick draperies and some of the furniture painted a cheerful yellow.
Our custodian Mr. Boucher, built us a new atlas case and a dictionary case for the reference section, while Mr. James Cordeiro, a resident of New Bedford, is repairing and refinishing our Reading Room tables as a public service.
Conclusion
All told, we feel that we can look back upon an agree- able and successful year. Although we still have projects unrealized for the improvement of the library, it does seem that we are accomplishing a few things. And things as yet undone can always be made to serve as a spur to our future activities.
Respectfully submitted, RITA E. STEELE, Librarian
