SCHOOL ENTRANCE

Children may enter the first grade if they are five years and nine months of age on or before September 1 of the cur- rent school year. Consequently children will be admitted to the first grade in September 1961 if born on or before Janu- ary 1, 1956. Certificates of birth and vaccination are re- quired at the time of entrance.

COMPULSORY SCHOOL AGE

All children must attend school between the ages of seven and sixteen years. Certain exceptions may be made by written permission of the Superintendent of Schools for children who have reached the age of fourteen and have com- pleted the sixth grade.

EMPLOYMENT OF MINORS UNDER 18

Employment permits, sometimes called "School Cards," are required for all persons under eighteen who are employed in manufacturing, mechanical, mercantile, and certain other work. These may be obtained at the office of the Superin- tendent of School or at the Principal's Office in the Fair- haven High School. The minor must appear in person and present a birth certificate or other suitable evidence of age.

Town Clerk's Report

As in previous years, in the interest of economy, the long list of births, marriages, and deaths have been eliminated from this report. All vital statistics are recorded and filed in this office, and any interested persons may secure any in- formation to which they are entitled by applying to the Town Clerk's office. The totals for 1960 may be briefly sum- marized as follows :

BIRTHS 268 MARRIAGES 168 DEATHS 210

In this town report it is customary for each town official to give you an account of his stewardship. In this connection may I quote an article from the Standard-Times of Novem- ber 2, 1957, by the Rev. John B. Maddaford :

"When I think of stewardship there are two ideas concerning it which immediately come to my mind.

"First, it is an obligation which rests upon each one of us: "Unto whom- soever much is given, of him much shall be expected." Whether we have little of much, one talent or five talents, we must give an account to God of our stewardship.

"Occasionally, we hear of a selfmade man. But he really doesn't exist. The things we have come to call our own are goods which have been placed in our trust and keeping and for which we must render an account, just as the bank must give an account of the money we have deposited.

"The second idea concerning stewardship is this: It is a glorious privilege and opportunity. How drab life would be if we could not share with others. Imagine a Christmas without any giving. We need to give for the good of our own souls quite as much as the cause to which we give needs our support. The person who does not share is not a well-developed personality. The widow who gave the last two mites she had, did so, not because she had to, but because she wanted. It was her privilege.

"Obligation may compel us to go the first mile, but it is a sense of privilege which prompts us to go the second. It is not so much what we are compelled to do, but what we are impelled to do which really counts. Jesus said, "When you have done all that is commanded you, say, 'We are unworthy servants; we have only done what was our duty'."

"Let us then exercise our stewardship, not because we must, but because we may."

For this opportunity and privilege to serve you I am thankful.

MICHAEL J. O'LEARY, Town Clerk
