SCHOOL COMMITTEE

To the Voters of Acton:

The school committee herewith submits its report with that of the superintendent for the year 1941. We believe that education is one of the greatest advantages of this great democracy.

Two committee members resigned during the year, Mr. Montague, and Mrs. Howe, the chairman. Their offices were filled by Mr. Schmitz and Mr. Robert Hall, the committee being unanimous in its approval of these candidates.

We wish to thank the voters and the special building com- mittee for their help in obtaining the much needed addition to the high school.

Our budget for 1942 necessarily calls for an increase. We are planning to meet the exact needs of each department of the budget and expect to do the same in the future. This will mean a fluctuating budget from year to year as the needs in the de- partments change.

We are asking more for salaries so that we can pay teachers an amount equivalent to that which they would receive in other towns similar to ours.

The cost of stationery and supplies has increased about 25% and textbook prices are higher. We use more fuel with the new addition to the high school, and so an increase in these items is necessary.

Because of the lack of funds last year we were not able to paint and repair the school in South Acton. This work must be done this year.

The committee requests that you appropriate the sum of $52,500 for the ensuing year.

Respectfully submitted,

RICHARD A. LOWDEN,

Chairman.
