ART. 9. To see if the town will authorize the Collector to use all such means in the collection of taxes as the Treasurer might if elected to that office.


Toted, That the Collector be instructed to use all the means and processes provided by law for the collection of all taxes remaining unpaid after the first day of December, 1915.


ART. 10. To see what compensation the town will allow the members of the Fire Department for the ensuing year.

the sum of fourteen dollars per year and fifty cents per hour while at work at fires.


ART. 11. To see how much per hour the town will allow for work on the highways for the year ensuing, or do or act anything relating thereto.


Voted, That the price per hour for labor on the highways for the ensuing year be left to the discretion of the Superin- tendent of Streets.


ART. 12. To see if the town will accept the provisions of Chapter 624 of the Acts of 1910, as amended by Chapter 207 of the Acts of 1911, authorizing the Selectmen to appoint a town accountant and abolish the office of Auditor, or do or act anything relating thereto.


Voted, That the Selectmen appoint a Town Accountant, the compensation to be fixed by them and the office of Auditor be abolished when said Accountant is installed.


ART. 13. To see if the town will grant and appropriate the sum of one thousand dollars to be used in conjunction with the State and County for the purpose of resurfacing and improving the grade of Spring and High Streets.


Voted, That the sum of One Thousand Dollars be, and hereby is granted and appropriated to be used in conjunction with the County and State for the purpose of resurfacing and improving the grade of Spring and High Streets.


ART. 14. To grant and appropriate the sum of three thousand seven hun- dred and fifty dollars to reimburse the County of Norfolk for money due for the construction of the bridge over the Charles River, between the towns of Medfield and Sherborn, and for repairs on the highway leading thereto.


Voled, That the Treasurer be and he is authorized, under the direction of the Selectmen to borrow the sum of $3,000.00, giving three notes of the town for $1,000.00 each, payable in one, two and three years and that the remaining sum of $750.00 be paid from the current tax levy.


ART. 15. To see if the town will accept the sum of fifty dollars, in trust, for the care of the Edmund Bullard lot in Vine Lake Cemetery.


Voted, That the trust be accepted.

ART. 16. To see if the town will purchase a tarvia wagon and pump for the purpose of economically covering the highways with tarvia, or do or act anything relating thereto.


Voted, That the sum of $850.00 be granted and appropri- ated for the purchase of a tarvia wagon and pump.


ART. 17. To see if the town will buy a power sprayer, grant and appro- priate money therefor, or do or act anything relating thereto. (By request).


Voted, That the sum of $600.00 be granted and appro- priated for the purchase of a power sprayer.


ART. 18. To see if the town will vote to place street lights on Bridge Street from its intersection with Main Street to the Bridge between Med- field and Millis and grant and appropriate money therefor. (Petition).


Voted, That the Selectmen contract for the necessary num- ber of lights on Bridge Street and that the sum of $125.00 be granted and appropriated for this purpose.


ART. 19. To see if the town will appoint a committee of five consisting of the chairman of the School Committee, the principal of the High School and three other citizens of the town to thoroughly investigate the sanitary, hygienic and safety conditions of the town schools and to report their find- ings with their recommendations for reform or improvement at a special town meeting. (Petition).


Voted, That the Chairman of the School Committee, the Principal of the High School and Messrs. Granville C. Mitchell, Fred A. Smith and Waldo A. Fitts act as said com- mittee to thoroughly investigate the sanitary, hygienic and safety conditions of the town schools and report their findings and recommendations for reform or improvement at a special town meeting.


All the Articles having been acted upon the meeting was dissolved.

SPECIAL MEETING,


JULY 20, 1916.


Pursuant to a warrant, issued by the Selectmen, the inhabi- tants of the Town of Medfield, duly warned and notified in the manner prescribed by law, met at the Town Hall in said Medfield, Monday Evening, March 29, 1916.


The meeting was called to order by the Moderator at 7.30 o'clock and the following action was taken upon the several articles contained in the warrant.


ARTICLE 1. To hear and act on the report of the Committee chosen at the last Annual Meeting "to look into and report upon the sanitary, safety and hygienic condition of the town schools," grant and appropriate money, if necessary or do or act anything relating thereto.


Voted, That the report of the Committee be accepted and that the sum of Three Thousand Dollars ($3,000.00) be granted and appropriated and the Treasurer, with the ap- proval of the Selectmen, be and he is authorized to issue notes of the town therefor, to be paid as follows: One thousand dollars to be paid in one year from date of issue; Five hun- dren dollars to be paid in two years from date of issue; Five hundred dollars to be paid in three years from date of issue and One thousand dollars to be paid in four years from date of issue.


ART. 2. To see if the town will purchase land of Alice O. Sewall for the purpose of enlarging the Cemetery, grant and appropriate money therefor, or do or act anything relating thereto.

Voted, That the Selectmen be and are instructed to pur- chase land of Alice O. Sewall for an extension of the cem- etery and that the Treasurer be and he is authorized with the approval of the Selectmen to borrow the sum of sixteen hundred dollars in two notes payable in four and five years from date of issue.


ART. 4. To see if the town will grant and appropriate a sum of money for the improvement of the town parks to be expended under the direction of the Park Commissioners, or do or act anything relating thereto.


Voted, That the sum of three hundred dollars be granted and appropriated to be expended under the direction of the Park Commissioners.


ART. 3. To see if the town will grant and appropriate the sum of Three Hundred Dollars for the purpose of cleaning out the Meeting House pond.


Voted, That the sum of three hundred dollars for the pur- pose of cleaning out the meeting-house pond.


ART. 5. To see if the town will authorize the Treasurer, under the direc- tion of the Selectmen, to borrow such sums of money as may be granted by a vote of the town on the foregoing Articles and to issue a note or notes of the town therefore, said notes to be paid from the taxes of the ensuing year unless otherwise provided for.


Voted, That the Treasurer be and he is authorized to bor- row, with the approval of the Selectmen, the sum of six hun- dred dollars and to give the note of the town therefor pay- able in one year from date of issue.


ART. 6. To see if the town will accept from Granville F. Dailey the gift of a Memorial Public Library to be erected on the southeast corner of Main and Pleasant Streets, in accordance with plans submitted by Wm. G. Perry, architect, or do or act anything relating thereto.


Voted, That the town accept the gift and that the Mode- rator appoint a committee of three to draft and present a letter of acceptance and thanks to the donor of the gift. Charles M. Loeffler, Edward French, M. D., and George Washburn were designated for the committee.

ART. 7. To see if the town will accept from Maude A. Ritchie the gift of a certain piece of land at corner of Adams and West Mill Street, as set forth on a plan known as "Plan of portion of West Mill Street," by E. * Worthington, Civil Engineer.


Voted, That the gift be accepted and the thanks of the town extended to the giver.


ART. 8. To see if the town will accept from Bracey Curtis the gift of a certain piece of land at corner of Adams and West Mill Streets, as set forth on a plan known as "Plan of a portion of West Mill St." by E. Worthington, Civil Engineer.


Voted, That the gift be accepted and the thanks of the town extended to the giver.


ART. 9. To see if the town will accept the gift of a certain piece of land bequeathed to the town by will of the late Willard Harwood, subject to the conditions imposed by the provisions of said will.


Voted, That the gift be accepted in accordance with the provisions of the will.


ART. 10. To see if the town will accept the following named sums of money as perpetual trusts the income to be used for the purpose hereinafter mentioned, viz. : Two hundred dollars for care of Alice O. Sewall lot in Vine Lake Cemetery. Five hundred dollars for care of John M. Richardson lot in Vine Lake Cemetery. Five hundred dollars from estate of John M. Richardson, for the Public Library.


Voted, That the trusts be accepted.


ART. 11. To see if the town will authorize the Selectmen to prepare a code of by-laws to be presented to the town for action at the next Annual Meeting.


Voted, That the Selectmen be and they are instructed to prepare a code of by-laws to be presented at the next annual meeting.

SPECIAL MEETING.


SEPTEMBER 25, 1916.


Pursuant to a warrant issued by the Selectmen the inhab- itants of the Town of Medfield, duly warned and notified in the manner prescribed by law met at the Town Hall in said Medfield, Monday evening, September 25, 1916.


The meeting was called to order by the Moderator at 7.30 o'clock and the following action was taken upon the several articles contained in the warrant.


ARTICLE 1. To choose a Moderator to preside at said meeting.


The annually elected Moderator being present no action was necessary.


ART. 2. To see if the town will vote to appropriate any unappropriated moneys in the treasury for the purpose of meeting the appropriations made under Article 1 of the warrant for the special town meeting held on July 20, 1916, or take any action relative thereto.


Voted, That for the purpose of meeting the appropriations made under Article 1 of the warrant for the special town meeting held on July 20, 1916, there be appropriated from taxes of 1914 and 1915, the sum of three thousand dollars.


ART. 3. To see if the town will vote to amend the vote passed under Art- icle 2 of the warrant for the special town meeting held on July 20, 1916, so as to read as follows: "Voted that there be appropriated the sum of $1,600.00 for the purchase of land of Alice O. Sewall for cemetery purposes, and that the Treasurer, with the approval of the Selectmen be and hereby is authorized to borrow said sum and to issue bonds or notes of the town there- for, said bonds or notes to be payable in accordance with the provisions of

Section 14 of Chap. 719 of the Acts of 1913, so that the whole loan shall be paid in not more than five years from the date of issue of the first bond or note, or at such earlier dates as the Treasurer and Selectmen may deter- mine."


Voted, That the town amend the vote passed under Art- icle 2 of the warrant for the special town meting held on July 20, 1916, so as to read as follows :


"Voted, That there be appropriated the sum of $1,600.00 for the purchase of land for cemetery purposes, and that the Treasurer, with the approval of the Selectmen, be and hereby is authorized to borrow said sum and to issue bonds or notes of the town therefor, said bonds or notes to be payable in ac- cordance with the provisions of Section 14 of Chapter 719 of the Acts of 1913, so that the whole loan shall be paid in not more than five years from the date of issue of the first bond or note, or at such earlier dates as the Treasurer and Selectmen may determine.

RECORD OF FIRES FOR THE YEAR 1916.


February 3, a still alarm for chimney fire at 7.30 P. M., in block owned by James Ord.


February 14, a still alarm at 8.15 P. M. for chimney fire in block owned by James Ord.


March 3, a still alarm for chimney fire in house owned by Edgar Kingsbury.


March 4, a still alarm for chimney fire in house owned by Sadie Sullivan.


April 4, an alarm at 6.30 P. M. for chimney fire in house occupied by Owen McAvoy. Damage slight.


April 18, a still alarm at 10.00 A. M. for grass fire on land owned by George Cheney. About three acres burned over.


April 30, a still alarm at 10.30 A. M. for brush fire on land owned by Samuel Guild. About 10 acres burned over.


May 11, a still alarm at 11.00 A. M. for grass fire on Adams Avenue, north of Sweeney's house.


May 14, a still alarm at 10.45 A. M. for grass fire on land owned by Joe Marcionette. About two acres burned over.


July 8, an alarm at 6.32 P. M. on barn owned by Herbert Hutson, caused by lightning. Completely destroyed. Loss . about $600.
