In the 21 building fires, the values are as follows:
Assessed value of buildings $15,972.50
Estimated loss to buildings and content 9,825.30
Insurance paid 18,473.37
Almost half of this insurance adjusted and paid was on one building and contents.
Both of the Fire Companies have a full complement of men, with a good number of substitutes in each Company thus assuring us of a full working company at all times.
The Engineers deem it safest to put on 4 new tires on the Maxim pumper this coming year, as the tires now on the Truck are nearly six years old.
We recommend that the Town raise and appropriate the sum of $3,000 for running expenses, as the amount ap- propriated last year was overdrawn.
At the present time neither fire company have helmets for protection nor have we any gas masks which we should have. While we have a fair amount of hose on the wagon, we do not believe that we have any too much, but believe that we should have a quantity of hose on hand for emer- gencies.
K. R. BERGGREN, Chief, E. T. CORCORAN, LESLIE C. WENTWORTH,
Board of Engineers.

Report of the Forest Fire Warden
To the Honorable Board of Selectmen :
I herewith submit my report as Forest Fire Warden for the year ending December 31, 1932.
I was called to 18 forest fires during the past year and issued 600 permits for fires in the open air.
I have the following equipment in my possession : Ford Truck bought in 1918.
20 Extinguishers.
5 Indian Pump Cans.
2 Acid Boxes.
50 gal. Water Drum.
1 Keg Soda.
12 gal. Acid.
48 Acid Bottles.
2 Glass Pitchers.
2 Water Pails.
10 Shovels.
4 Brooms.
1 Badge.
1 Water Can.
We have been very fortunate in the past year to have had the State Forest Fire Truck located in Town, which
:
158
has aided us in holding our fires to a small area; but we cannot always be so fortunate as to have this Truck at our every call.
Therefor, I recommend, that the Town appropriate and raise a sufficient amount of money to purchase a new truck with pump attached, and also portable pump for the use of this Department. The truck we have now has been very costly to keep in repairs, and it will cost quite an amount of money to put it into serviceable condition; and then when this money has been spent you have nothing with which to work. The solid tires on this Truck break most of our acid bottles, and thus we have a large item for supplies, which can be cut down by the use of different equipment.
In following the recommendation of your State De- partment the purchase of a Ford Chassis, upon which can be mounted a lighter weight body; equipped with a Barton Head end pump, and a portable pump, for use in places where it is impossible to take the truck, with 2,000 ft. of 1" hose can be purchased for about $2,000.00 and would effect your Tax rate approximately seventy cents, and would make the cost of protection to your woodlands about $.016 per acre.
This truck could be stationed in the building with your Fire Department Truck, at a small expense of putting new doors on the building; and would also serve as a secondary truck for your regular Department answering such alarms as chimney fires, etc. and for use at Farm Fires it would be indispensable, as with the small pumps that it would carry, it would make use of the water obtainable at these Farms to a much better advantage than the present Fire Truck.
I have appointed Wardens from practically every sec- tion of the Town in order that forest fires which break out may receive instant attention.
