Despite the fact that we, as a department, worked continuously cracking down on the would-be violator, I had to record the death of Philip Lepage of Uxbridge which occurred on September 9, 1956. Our town had not had a pedestrian of automobile fatality since November 1954. Let us all work together as a team and when we take the wheel of an automobile into our hands let us bear in mind that automobiles ranked third in the causes of death in our country last year.

Our safety patrol program has been very effective under the capable supervision of our High School Principal Mr. Henry Clough. The boys who have been designated as Patrol Boys have worked very hard to make the program a success.

In June 1956 we received notice from the Registry of Motor Vehicles that an operator's report had to be made

56

out only when the property damage exceeded $200. or if there is any personal injury.

An all night "Parking Ban" was placed in effect in the Town this past Winter. This has proven to be a great help to the Highway Department when plowing snow.

A total of 9,555 miles was covered by the Police Department in the performance of their duties.

I wish to take this opportunity to thank each and every one for their cooperation in 1956.

Respectfully submitted

WILLIAM D. RONDEAU,

Chief of Police

REPORT OF THE HIGHWAY SURVEYOR

To the Board of Selectmen:

Gentlemen :

I submit the following report of work done on Town rcads during 1956 :

CHAPTER 81

There were 11,306 gallons of tar and asphalt applied to various roads under this Chapter. On Quissett Road 1,600 feet of roadway was rebuilt and hard topped. On Inman Hill 1,000 feet was widened and rebuilt with a hard top ap- plied. 1,400 feet of road was widened on Blackstone Street and a bad curve was eliminated .. One hundred and fifty yards of ledge was removed and the surface was also hard topped. Brush was cut on all roads including Chapter 90 highways.

CHAPTER 90 MAINTENANCE

There were 14,046 gallons of tar and asphalt applied to various roads under this Chapter. The shoulders were cut down on some of these roads and some new drainage in- stalled.

CHAPTER 90 CONSTRUCTION (1955)

With money carried over from the 1955 appropriation, we completed the work on Providence Street. The new drain-

65

age near the residence of Mr. Keefe is now adequate to take care of the flow of water from Willow Brook and is work- ing satisfactorily .. The unexpended funds from the Provi- dence Street project were applied to work on Blackstone Street.

CHAPTER 90 CONSTRUCTION (1956)

On account of drainage problems, we were late in start- ing construction on North Avenue. The drainage for this section is now completed. We used 914 feet of twelve inch pipe and 260 feet of fifteen inch pipe. Four catch basins, three man holes and two drop inlets were installed. When the roadway is completed in 1957 it will be thirty-two feet wide as far as the Catholic Church.

MOWRY STREET IMPROVEMENT

Under a town appropriation, a section of this road as far as the William Hutchinson residence was widened, grav- eled and drainage was installed.

I wish to thank the townspeople as well as the State and County Engineers for their cooperation and assistance during the past year.

REPORT OF TREE WARDEN

Due to the Dutch Elm disease, I have taken down and destroyed 34 trees and trimmed the highways.

A survey has been made with Mr. Lawrence R. Laver- dure, District Supervisor of Natural Resources of infested trees. There are about fifty more trees with Dutch Elm disease which must be taken down and destroyed. I am, therefore, requesting an additional amount of $300 in my 1957 budget to cover this work. This will make the total appropriation for this department $1,200.00.

SEVENTY-SIXTH ANNUAL REPORT OF TAFT PUBLIC LIBRARY

The Trustees of the Taft Public Library submit the Re- port of the Librarian, the Financial Report, and Trustees' Report for the year ending December 31, 1956.

The redecoration of the interior of the Library has been the major project of the year. The ceiling and walls have been repaired and painted. The woodwork has been varn- ished, and the floor sanded and sealed. Some minor repair on basement windows and roof has been necessary.

The Trustees recommend the installation of storm wind- ows on the building to improve the efficiency of the present heating system.

It is encouraging to note from the report of the Librar- ian that circulation of books and periodicals has increased during the past year. In order that the Library may be of greater service and convenience to the community, the Trustees have approved the opening of the Library on Mon- day afternoons in addition to the regular schedule.

Respectfully submitted,

ERNEST P. WOOD

1956 LIBRARY REPORT

To the Trustees of the Taft Public Library :

The circulation for the year (99 days) was 5902, an increase of 1279 over last year. The largest number given out in one day was 206, the smallest, 11; and the average, 59. Circulation by classes was as follows: fiction, 1838; Juvenile, 2386; magazines, 882; biography, 278; history and travel, 165; literature and fine arts, 83; science and useful arts, 160; all others, 110.

New books added to the Library by the Town, 45; by the Fletcher Fund, 71; by Anna Ellis Fund, 1; and by gift, 55, making a total of 172. Gifts of books were received from Mrs. Maude Clough, Miss Clara Pond, Mr. James Flanagan, Mrs. Mabel Griffin, Mr. Richard Harding, Mrs. Hazel Leonard and Mrs. Gertrude Lewis, for which we wish to express our thanks and appreciation. We also wish to acknowledge the gift of two books "The Whitin Family" and "The Swift Family" by E. Kent Swift of Whitinsville; "Massachusetts State Government", compiled by the League of Women Voters of Massachusetts, given by the Filene Foundation; "MacArthur: his rendezvous with history", given by ยท Rem- ington Rand Foundation, Inc .; "Speak to the Earth", by Max Miller, given by an Oil Co .; and "John D Rockefeller, Jr., a Portrait", given by his daughter.

Magazines available to readers are American Home, At- lantic Monthly, Better Homes and Gardens, Boys' Life, Col- liers', Good Houskeeping, Ladies' Home Journal, McCall's, National Geographic, Popular Mechanics, Readers' Digest, Red Book, Saturday Evening Post, Time and Woman's Home Companion.

80

Fines collected and turned over to the town treasurer, $28.83.

The interior of the Library was completely redecorated in the spring, making it bright and attractive. All the books were removed from the shelves, the shelves cleaned, and the books replaced by the librarian and her assistant. Miss Mar- jorie Vear has given excellent service as high school assist- ant.

A Story Hour for the small children and a Reading Club, with the States of the U. S. A. as the subject, were well attended in the summer.

Two area meetings for librarians from Southern Worc- ester County were attended by the librarian. In April, the meeting was held at the Whitinsville Library; and in Sep- tember, here at the Taft Public Library. Thirty were in at- tendance from twelve neighboring towns. Our guests, Miss Alice Cahill and Mrs. Alice Howard, from the Massachusetts Division of Public Libraries, conducted an all-day Reference Workshop which was most helpful. A luncheon was served in the Town Hall by the ladies of the Evening Alliance; and it was a most successful affair.

Art Week was observed by an exhibit of paintings by two local artists, Miss Jane Coleman and Mrs. Doris Daniels Cox.

During National Book Week, a display of fifty new books was arranged in cooperation with the Mendon PTA, in a store window in the Sabatinelli Block.

81

Open House was held at the Library in the evening of November 26th, when our guest of honor was Mrs. Lena George, a former librarian and trustee of this library for many years.

From October to December, the librarian attended a nine-week lecture course in "The Library as an Information

Center" at the Town Library in Framingham. Mrs. Maude Clough kindly substituted for the librarian on these Thursday evenings. This course was planned under the direction of the Massachusetts Division of Library Extension.

May we thank the trustees and town officials for their cooperation and support, and the townspeople for their in- creased interest.

Respectfully submitted,

VESTELLA M. DANIELS,

Librarian
