MENDON SCHOOL NURSING REPORT
Mr. Percy L. Rowe Superintendent of Schools Mendon, Mass.
May we submit to you the Annual School Nursing Re- port for the year ending December, 1956.
Mendon School was visited Tuesday of each week when school was in session. Registration was held at the school on May 18th. Physical examinations of pupils in Grades 1, 4, 7 and 10 were done by Dr. Ronald Lukert, assisted by the nurses. Vision and hearing tests were completed on all grade pupils. Notices regarding defects were sent home to parents and guardians. Antigen clinics were held in Mendon School on March 29th, April 10th and May 8th. These clinics are held yearly in the spring. Any child three months of age or older are welcome. These injections protect children from whooping-cough, diptheria and lockjaw.
A vaccination clinic was also conducted on May 22nd by Dr. Ronald Lukert, assisted by the school nurse. Twenty- nine children were vaccinated. This also is to be a yearly clinic and any children in Mendon will be welcome. All children were weighed, measured and inspected during the year. During the school year we were most fortunate that Mendon had no real epidemic of any kind. We had a few scattered cases of the usual children diseases, such as german measles and chicken pox. Colds and sore throats were prevalent at times. We did have one reported case of rheumatic fever and two cases of scarlet fever.
111
Eight polio clinics were conducted in the Mendon School, starting February 28th ; and ending October 23rd. Dr. Ronald Lukert was in charge, assisted by the District Nursing staff, Board members of the Association and volunteer workers. Many hours of preparation were spent to make these clinics successful. We had the utmost cooperation from Dr. Lukert, the Board of Health, Mr. Rowe, Supt. of Schools, Mrs. York, his secretary, and Mr. Henry Clough, Principal of Mendon School. All were most helpful and I wish to extend my sincere thanks for the time and courtesy extended during the clinic season. It was a busy time for all workers; but, for such a worthy cause-helping to wipe out a vicious disease- time was of little consquence.
The following defects were found amongst the children examined by Dr. Lukert :-
Referred for dental evaluation
46
Enlarged tonsils
2
Wax in ears 3
Bronchial asthma
1
Otitis media
1
Dermatitis
1
Sebaceous cyst in ear
1
Wheezes in chest
1
Low arches
2
The following is a summary of the work done by the nurse in her visits to school :-
Inspection of pupils 531
Pupils inspected for disease 144
Pupils recommended for exclusion
14
Pupils and nurse conferences
79
Pupils treated for minor injuries
83
Nurse and teacher conferences 394
Home visits 34
112
In closing, may we express our thanks to Dr. Lukert, school physician, Mr. Rowe, Mr. Clough, and the teachers, for their courtesy and cooperation; to the school committee and town officials for their support, and to the parents for their cooperation and confidence.
Respectfully submitted,
GRACE MORAN, R. N.

REPORT OF MUSIC SUPERVISOR
To the Superintendent of Schools:
My. dear Mr. Rowe:
My format for teaching music in the Mendon Schools has been carried on this past year very much the same as in previous years. I would say that we have quite a bit of activity in the music department in Mendon. We have a fine roster of teachers in the Mendon Schools and in as much as my work depends a great deal upon the willingness and ability of the grade teachers, I an happy to report that in every case I have found them able and conscientious. The children are getting a thorough understanding of the subject and they realize that the voice exercises and drilling in theory, to which they are subject, have a very specific aim. However, I am still in the convincing stage with some of my Junior High people. I relentlessly insist that they will enjoy music if they have the ability to read it and some of them just as relentlessly refuse to try. However, the evident enjoyment that the majority of the youngsters get out of the music period, more than repays for the lack of spirit of a few.
Again, I want to thank you, Mr. Rowe, for your under- standing, Mr. Clough for his "magic" presence and thought- fulness, and all the teachers and members of the School Committee for their cooperation.
Respectfully submitted,
CHRISTINE M. WILSON, Supervisor of Music Education

REPORT OF ART SUPERVISOR
Mr. Percy L. Rowe Superintendent of Schools Mendon, Mass. Dear Mr. Rowe:
The art program was added in the early spring in the Mendon school. Grades one through six worked with scissors, brushes, paper and clay to produce many exciting motifs. Again in September art was included in the busy schedule of the elementary children and classes for the junior high and high school were added.
The main purpose of this program was to teach the children to "see" and to acquaint them with the many wonderful things that can be made from almost anything. With paint, chalk and charcoal a new world of color was opened to them. Cloth, yarn bits of jewelry and scraps of ribbon were turned into people or interesting designs. We also tried to keep the talented few moving in search of better results.
I would like to thank the teachers for their wonderful help and cooperation. Without them all this would not have been possible.
Respectfully submitted,
MARJORIE WEED,
Art Supervisor
