ARLINGTON, Dec. 30, 1879.
REPORT OF WATER COMMISSIONERS.
The Annual Report of the Board of Water Commissioners for the year ending Dec. 31, 1879, is herewith submitted. The Board was organized by the choice of Henry Mott, President, and B. Delmont Locke, Clerk and Registrar. Sylvester Stickney was appointed Superintendent. We have had a permanent sluice-way made at the outlet of the Great Meadows, built of stone laid in cement, so that we think we can retain all the water upon the meadows until such time as it shall be needed in the reservoir ; we have no doubt that by this means we shall have a large supply of water, but we have found that the present filter is not large enough to supply all the water needed for all purpose's, so that the water had to be let into the main pipe for about 25 days, direct from the reservoir, consequently it was not so good ; this we think can be remedied. We have had the grass and bushes cleaned out from the rip-rap in the reser- voir and for a number of feet around, so that it is now in a good and clean condition. There has been an extension of the main pipe in Chestnut Street from Medford Street ; 425 feet of 4-inch cast-iron pipe has been laid, and one 4-inch gate placed in the same.
Also in Academy Street, 432 feet of 4-inch pipe has been laid to the line at the upper end of the street, and one 4-inch .. gate, and one hydrant placed in the same. One hydrant on Medford Street has been replaced. There have also been 20 service pipes put in for family use and irrigation. The con-

dition of the main pipe in certain localities is such as to call for almost constant repairs, and we think the day is not far distant when it will be necessary to relay certain portions of the same. We have endeavored to keep the works in as good order as possible, under the circumstances, and at the present time they are in fair condition. The income from water rates has been more than last year, and the running expenses have been increased, for a detailed statement of which, we refer you to the Treasurer's Report annexed to this.
The Lexington Tax case, which was referred to the Su- preme Court, has been decided, but as the whole question was not settled satisfactorily to both parties, it hás again been referred to the Court.
The case of Spalding which was referred to the same court, has been decided in favor of the town. There have been two claims made for damage by flowage of land, which have not yet been settled.
We would recommend the building of a suitable fence to enclose the land on Lowell Street adjoining the reservoir, to keep out animals.
The Treasurer has settled in full with Mr. Norman, the contractor, for repairs of main pipe, chargeable to him under his guaranty.
