Broadway
Is in good condition, except the portion from its junction with Warren street to Winter street.
Bow Street.
This street remains in poor condition, still awaiting some action by the County Commissioners.
Eastern Avenue.
A portion has been repaired the past season, and other portions will need repairing the ensuing season.
Franklin Street
Has been coated with gravel and rolled the past season, and is in good condition.
Medford Street.
This street has been graded and macadamized the past year, from the cemetery to Medford line. This was the most expensive work upon any one street, requiring a large amount of material (3409 loads), which had to be hauled a long distance. Sidewalks were also graded the entire length.
Mystic Street.
That portion of this street from the residence of John S. Crosby to the estate of William Stowe has been repaired

with stone and gravel, and is in good condition. Some other portions have been coated with gravel.
Pleasant Street.
But little has been done on this street the past year.
Park Avenue.
Some parts of this avenue have been regravelled the past season.
River Street.
Some gravel has been used this season to fill a low portion of this street.
Warren Street
Has been coated with gravel the entire length and is in fine condition.
Sidewalks.
Considerable material has been placed upon walks in dif- ferent parts of the town.
Guide Boards.
Several new boards have been placed in position and some old ones repaired and re-painted.
Bridges and Culverts.
The River street bridge has been re-planked the past year.
Two brick culverts have been put across Medford street, several old stone culverts have been taken up and relaid, and eight water grates have been set.

SELECTMEN'S REPORT.
Railings and Bank-walls.
Quite a sum has been expended in new railing for em- bankments on Mystic, Dudley, Brattle and Grove streets. The bank-wall on Mystic street, adjoining the property of the late James Wyman, has been relaid. The wall at each end of the Nash estate has been moved back, enabling us to grade the sidewalk. A new bank-wall has been put in on Grove street adjoining the property of Jere. Crowley.
Stone Crusher and Stone.
The engine and boiler are in good condition. The crusher is getting considerably worn, but may possibly stand for another season.
We have quite an amount of stone piled in the yard ready for crushing, but not enough for the requirements of another season.
Teams and Tools.
The teams and tools are in as good condition and of as much value as they were a year ago. A new Pennock road machine has been purchased the past year, and has proved to be satisfactory for the purpose for which it has been prin- cipally used, namely, scraping gutters.
Watering Streets.
The same routes have been watered as last year.
Almshouse.
Mr. George W. Austin and wife have had the care and management of the Almshouse during the past year, and have performed their duties in a very satisfactory manner, as the neatness and good order of everything in and about the premises will at all times testify.

It will be noticed that there are four persons at insane asylums, maintained wholly at the town's expense.
Street Lamps.
There are the same number of lamps for the burning of gas as last year, viz., fifty-three. There have been three new ones erected at the Heights, one on Arlington avenue, thir-

teen on Lake street, and fifteen on Medford street, for the burning of gasoline, making eighty-six in all. Four of those on Medford street, viz., one in front of the school- house and three in front of the cemetery, were paid for by the town; the others, by the abutters. The posts are of iron, with copper-trimmed lanterns. The gasoline lamps have been lighted and kept in repair by the Globe Gaslight Company on contract. The gas lamps have been lighted by Mr. John Roden, employed by the town. All the posts have been painted and the lanterns glazed and painted.
Coal.
The coal was furnished for the town by Mr. Warren A. Peirce, he being the lowest bidder among several others, for the sum of $5.80 per ton, and sixty cents extra for Lehigh, including housing.
Cemeteries.
The cemeteries have been under the care of Mr. F. Lemme. Some flowering and foliage plants have been set. A new avenue, about 1800 feet in length, by 20 feet in width, has been built by removing the loam and crowning with gravel. We would recommend that a row of trees be set on each side of this avenue the coming spring; also at other places on the easterly part of the cemetery. We find that in the older part of the cemetery the trees have grown so large that they interfere very much with each other's growth. We recommend the removing of some of them, also the regravelling of most of the avenues.
Police.
The same officers have served the town as police as for several years past, viz., Mr. John H. Hartwell, Mr. P. J. Shean and Mr. G. Barry. The following is the report of Mr. Hartwell as Chief : -
13
SELECTMEN'S REPORT.
To the Board of Selectmen :
GENTLEMEN,-I have the honor to make the annual Police report for the year ending December 31, 1882, and offer such suggestions as in my opinion are for the welfare of the town.
The regular force consists of three men, one day and two night officers. The night officers report for duty at 7 P. M., and remain on duty until 4 A. M., from the first of April until the first of October, and until 5 A. M., from the first of October until the first of April. The officer doing day duty, who also has charge of the Town House, is at the Station at 6.30 A. M., and is on duty until 10 P. M., and oftentimes until later. I would call the attention of the citizens to the fact that another night man be appointed, for this reason, as after your day officer leaves for home one of the night officers has to remain at the Station, so that one night the upper part of the town is without any officer at all, and the next the lower part of the town is without one, and there is really no officer for the Pleasant street district at all. We have had but two Special officers the past year who were put on duty only when required or in cases of emer- gency. If the town should not think it best to appoint another regular officer, there should be more Specials to be used under the direction of the Selectmen and Chief.
