SELECTMEN'S REPORT.
We submit the following as our annual report for the year ending December 31st, 1894. The year has been an im- portant one for the town. Within its twelve months the new High School building has been completed and occupied ; the High Service water system has been established, and is already available for the use of the Fire Department ; the bonds for both of these much needed improvements having been placed at a low rate of interest, thereby secur- ing the addition of these valuable advantages to the town at a reasonable outlay. The school bonds were disposed of at private sale. The water bonds were advertised and sold to the highest bidder.
The extended work upon Mystic street and Arlington avenue, now nearly completed, has been of an expensive character, particularly on Mystic street, which has required the building of heavy walls at a number of points on the line of the street. The work at the " Old brick school- house " on the avenue, was also of a difficult and expensive nature. This work has been well done, and after that now in progress at the Lexington end of the avenue, and Win- chester end of Mystic street is completed, there will be but little expense required on these two streets for some time, excepting the ordinary expense of repairing the roadway.
It has been our plan to encourage as much as possible the placing of curb-stone along the line of our sidewalks ; we trust that this idea will meet with approval and be con-

SELECTMEN'S REPORT.
tinued wherever possible. The streets, sidewalks and[gut- ters can be kept in much better condition and at less ex- pense if curb-stone is used, and the general appearance of the streets is much improved.
The purchase of the O. S. Kelley Company's steam roller has proved to be a good investment for the town. The excellent results of its use have fully justified the Board in securing it on the favorable terms which were offered them. The income derived from renting it to other towns. has very much more than paid the interest on the entire cost of the roller including repairs.
The next street which should receive special attention is Broadway. This street should be rebuilt and graded from Tufts street to Alewife Brook and to do the work properly will require a liberal appropriation. The present grade is such, that between the points named the drainage is from the street to lands on each side, instead of along its own lines to the brook as it should be. The principal line of connection with the Metropolitan sewer will be through this street, so the work of rebuilding and grading can be economi- cally done at the same time that the sewer is constructed. The complete details of the work upon the streets will be found in the report of the Superintendent of Streets.
SEWER AND DRAINS.
We are pleased to be able to report that the Metropolitan sewer will be available for our use sometime during the com- ing summer. The opening of this system will remove from Alewife Brook the drainage which now flows into it from Cambridge. As authorized by a vote of the town, at the meeting held December 29th, the Selectmen have arranged for complete plans and specifications for a system of sewerage that will provide for the present and future needs of the entire town.
