The cost of repairs last year was materially increased, on account of the widening of the street opposite the Library, the portion of the expense paid from the Library appropria- tion being about one hundred dollars.

REPORT OF TRUSTEES OF ROBBINS LIBRARY.

The Librarian's report shows a considerable increase in the number of books taken out during the past year, and the increasing use of the books by all classes indicates a gratify- ing interest in the library by the citizens generally.

The statistics and further particulars of the work of the year may be found in the Librarian's report.

LIBRARIAN'S REPORT.

To the Trustees of the Robbins Library :

GENTLEMEN-The second year in the new building marks no special change in the library administration. All con- nected with the work before the removal fully appreciate the advantages gained in additional room, conveniences and ar- tistic surroundings, and their respective duties are fulfilled in a satisfactory manner.

The following works added in 1894 are worthy of special notice : The Cabinet of Irish Literature, by G. A. Read, in four volumes, Century Cyclopedia of Names, Dictionary of Music and Musicians, edited by Sir George Grove, in five volumes, Famous Composers and their Works, edited by J. K. Paine and others, in three volumes, five volumes of Johnson's Universal Cyclopædia, Ornamental Treasure, by H. Dol- metsch, History of the Modern Styles of Architecture, by James Fergusson, in two volumes, United States of America, edited by N. S. Shaler, in two volumes. All except the last two belong to our Reference library. Since this department is becoming more important every year, it is desirable to make it as full as possible. We have already completed some sets of magazines and it is hoped we can do more in this direction.

There were loaned in 1894, 8771 more books and 266 more magazines than in the previous year, an unusually large increase in our delivery of books. This may be partly owing to the fact that several of the public school teachers have availed themselves of the privilege of taking ten books at one time on a teacher's card. Although these books are

LIBRARIAN'S REPORT.

not subject to the usual time regulation, yet we reserve the right to send for any book, if necessary, after a teacher has had it a reasonable length of time.

We have tried in vain to recover the two books missing. Those who took them have moved from town and we have thus far been unable to trace the family. The books are inexpensive juveniles.

The method of allowing the public to see the new books before they are put into circulation, now in vogue in many libraries, is evidently much appreciated here where for the first time we have room enough to set apart a table especially for them.

Our fine building has attracted many visitors from all parts of the country and has been universally admired for the simplicity and elegance of its style. One of those most interested was Mrs. Peter Thacher, who, as Miss Esterbrook, has the honor of being the second librarian, from 1839 to 1841, when the library was moved into her home, the old Adams house. A photograph of an oil painting of this house has been presented to us by Mr. E. W. McGlenen.

Mrs. Thacher has given as a curiosity a small pamphlet.en- titled " The Constitution of the West Cambridge Charitable and Reading Society. Instituted the 19th of August, 1816." We also have received from Miss Lucy Lerned, a ster- eoscopic view of the residence, in Hopkinton, N. H., of Dr. Lerned, the founder of this library. We are indebted to Mr. Warren Hapgood for " History of the town of Harvard, Mass., 1732-1893," by H. S. Nourse, to the U. S. Bureau of Education for the Catalogue of 5000 volumes for a Popu- lar Library shown at the World's Fair, and to the following Public Libraries for copies of Finding-lists and Bulletins : Brookline, Lancaster, Millicent Library in Fairhaven, Salem, Watertown, Worcester, Mass., and Osterhout] in Wilkes- Barré, Pa. We also acknowledge the regular freceipt of " The Tuftonian " from Tufts College and " The Record " from Goddard Seminary, Barre, Vt.
