Article 18 taken up. (Amendment of Zoning By- Law.)
The following motion was made by John R. Hendrick.
That the lines as shown upon map adopted at the adjourned Town Meeting held May 15, 1924, as a part of the Zoning By-Law of the Town of Arlington, be modified and amended by striking out the present restriction on the hereinafter described territory and substituting therefor the following: That the area northerly of Highland avenue, easterly of Hawthorne avenue, southerly of Scituate street and westerly of Gray street, between Highland avenue and Scituate street be included in the General Residence District.
Howard B. S. Prescott. presented the Report of Arlington Planning Board on petitions for changes in zoning, as follows:
Arlington, June 4, 1924.
Under the provisions of the Zoning By-law, adopted by the adjourned Town Meeting, on May 15, 1924, five petitions have been presented to your Plan- ning Board for hearings on proposed amendments to said By-law. Each of these asks for a change in the class of buildings to be permitted within the respective areas, as set forth later.
Notices were posted, as required, and the hearings held on May 29, 1924, in Hearing Room of Robbins Memorial Town Hall. After full consideration of the arguments there presented, and also having viewed the locations, the following report and recommendations are submitted for such action as this Town Meeting may approve.

The petitions were taken up in the following order :
1. Petition of John Kelly, that the area northerly of Highland avenue, easterly of Gray street, southerly of land formerly of MacDonald and westerly of land formerly of Bonelli-Adams Co., be included in the "General Residence District."
2. Petition of William N. Robbins and James R. Smith, that the area northerly of Highland avenue, easterly of Hawthorne avenue, southerly of Scituate - street and westerly of Gray street, between Highland avenue and Scituate street, be included in the "General Residence District."
These two petitions, being for adjoining property and the surroundings of similar nature, were taken up together.
It is recommended that both of these petitions be reported for favorable action.
3. Petition of Thomas Ryan, that the area be- tween bounded easterly by the property of William V. Taintor, formerly of Fred N. Chase, southerly by Massachusetts avenue, westerly by Mill street, and northerly by a line parallel with Massachusetts avenue, one hundred (100) feet therefrom, be included in the "Business District."
It is recommended that this petitioner be given leave to withdraw.
4. Petition of Mary V. Butler, et al., that the area west of Park avenue, between the corner of Wol- laston avenue and the land of Edward J. Butler, southerly of Wollaston avenue, between Park avenue and Hillside avenue, and easterly of Hillside avenue, a distance of approximately one hundred and fifty (150) feet, be included in the "General Residence District."

It is recommended that this petition be reported for favorable action.
5. Petition of C. Alfred Myshrall, that the area one hundred (100) feet in depth on northerly side of Massachusetts avenue, lying between Willow place on the west and Ramsdell court on the east, be in- cluded in the "Business District."
It is recommended that this petitioner be given leave to withdraw.

Philip A. Hendrick, Esq., representing James R. Smith, explained the foregoing petition, embodied in the motion as made by John R. Hendrick.

On a rising vote, seventy-one voting in favor and forty-five in opposition, the motion was lost, a two- thirds vote being necessary. Messrs. Washburn, Marsters and Clarence A. Moore acted as tellers.
The following motion was made by John R. Hendrick :
That the lines as shown upon the Map adopted by the adjourned Town Meeting held May 15, 1924, as a part of the Zoning By-law of the Town of Arlington be modified and amended by striking out the present restriction on the hereinafter described territory and substituting therefor the following: That the area between bounded easterly by the property of William V. Taintor, formerly Fred. M. Chase, southerly by Massachusetts avenue, westerly by Mill street and northerly by a line parallel with Massachusetts avenue one hundred feet therefrom be included in the "Busi- ness District."

Voted (By a two-thirds vote) : That all votes of the town passed on May 15, 1924, under Article 38 of the Warrant for the Annual Meeting relating to the "Zoning By-law," so called, and particularly the fol- lowing vote: "Voted that the Zoning By-laws as pre- sented by the committee and amended at this meeting be made and adopted as By-laws of the town," be and hereby are ratified and confirmed, such ratification and confirmation not to affect any amendment to said by- laws made at this meeting.
Article 20 taken up. (Playground - Crosby School.)
Voted : That the playground adjoining the Crosby School yard be in charge of the School Committee and the Park Commissioners jointly.
On motion of Hollis M. Gott, Article 1 was taken from the table.
All business under Article 1 having been trans- acted the same was declared disposed of.
The meeting adjourned at eleven o'clock.

By virtue of this Warrant, I have notified and warned the legal voters of the Town of Arlington to meet at the times and places and for the purposes herein named by causing a printed attested copy of the same to be left at every dwelling house in the town and by posting an attested copy at the doors of the Town Hall seven days at least before said day of meeting, and by posting attested copies in two or more con- spicuous places in each voting precinct in the town. A notice of the time, place and objects of the meeting was published in the local papers.

Article 2. To see if the town will make an appro- priation for the use of the Committee for the proper Observance of the 150th Anniversary of the Revolution- ary War, April 19, 1925, determine in what manner the money shall be raised or take any action relating thereto.
Article 3. To see if the town will vote to appoint a committee of five to secure plans and estimates for a school building to be located on the True land on Lake street, Arlington, this committee to report at the next annual town meeting, to make an appropriation for the use of this committee; or take any other action relating thereto.

Article 4. To see if the town will make an appro- priation for the extension of the Sewerage System; de- termine in what manner the money shall be raised and expended ; or take any action thereon.

Article 6. To see if the town will make an appro- priation for the construction of a sidewalk on Summer street from Brattle street to Park Ave. Ext .; determine in what manner the money shall be raised and expended; or take any action thereon.
Article 7. To see if the town will accept the estab- lishment of a building line along the northerly side of the way known as Broadway and the easterly side of the way known as Medford street, beginning at an iron bolt on the northerly side line of Broadway, said bolt being S. 74 deg. 37 min. E. and a distance of 32.12 feet from the southeasterly corner of Cooper Tavern, so called, to the easterly side line of Medford street, as made and reported by the Joint Board of Selectmen and Board of Public Works, establish said line, make an ap- propriation therefor, including damages, determine in what manner the money shall be raised, or take any ac- tion relating thereto. Said line as so established is described as follows :-
Proposed building line on the northerly side of Broad- way and easterly side of Medford street.
Beginning at an iron bolt on the northerly side line of Broadway, said bolt being S. 74 deg. 37 min. E. and a distance of 32.12 feet from the southeasterly corner of Cooper Tavern, so called, thence N. 46 deg. 13 min. 40 sec. W. a distance of 48.43 feet to a point of curve, thence northwesterly, northerly and northeasterly on a curve to the right with a radius of 29.0 feet, a distance of 52.04 feet to the easterly side line of Medford street as shown by a red line upon a plan marked "Plan Showing Proposed Building Line in Arlington, Mass., on Mass. Ave., Broadway and Medford Street, Scale 1 in. equals 20 ft., August 26, 1924, G. E. Ahern, Town Engineer".
