GENERAL STATISTICS
Arlington is situated six miles northwest of Boston, in latitude 42 deg., 25 min. north; longitude 71 deg., 09 min. west, at an elevation above mean tide of from 4 to 377 feet.
Massachusetts avenue at Pleasant street, elevation, 48 feet.
Massachusetts avenue at Park avenue, elevation, 155 feet.
Park Circle at Eastern avenue (base of standpipe), elevation, 377 feet.
Crescent Hill avenue at Park Place, elevation, 281 feet.
The town and a part of what is now Belmont were set off from Cambridge and incorporated as West Cam- bridge in 1807. The name was changed from West Cam- bridge to Arlington in 1867.

STREET LIGHTING
During the year there were thirty-five (35) new street lights installed as follows: Allen street, three (3) ; Broadway and Allen street, one (1) ; Crescent Hill avenue, one (1) ; Foster street, five (5); Hutchinson road, two (2); Lakehill avenue, three (3); Lake street, opposite Lakehill avenue, one (1); Medford street at Hamlet street, one (1); Orvis road at Brooks avenue, one (1) ; Overlook road at Ronald road, one (1) ; Park avenue No., three (3) ; River street, two (2) ; Ronald road, eight (8) ; Windsor street, three (3).

INSPECTION OF WIRES IN BUILDINGS
Nineteen hundred and thirty-eight (1,938) applica- tions for permits for electrical construction were issued, three thousand and sixty-five (3,065) inspections were made, and one thousand nine hundred and sixty-eight (1,968) installations were approved.
There were no fires caused by defective wiring dur- ing the year.
POLES AND WIRES ON STREETS
The Edison Company and the Telephone Company installed one hundred and eleven (111) new poles and replaced ninety-five (95) poles on public streets during the year.
FIRE ALARM SYSTEM
There were seven (7) Fire Alarm boxes installed: Box 171 Egerton road, corner of Herbert road; Box 18 Lake street, opposite Wyman lane; Box 241 Rawson road at Exeter street; Box 271 Mystic street at Summer street; Box 462 Summer street at Washington street; Box 561 Pierce school; and Box 612 was installed in the main building of the Ring Sanatorium, being paid for by the management.
Two gong's and one relay were installed in the Cen- tral Fire Station and additional batteries were installed in the Fire Alarm Headquarters; and a terminal post was set up on Pleasant street near Lake street to con- form with the Mutual Aid System with Belmont.
Extensive repairs have been made to the Aerial Wires and abandoned sections removed. Seven hundred and seventy-five (775) feet of special two conductor dry cable was installed in Lake street to Box 18 to avoid the limbs of the trees,

UNDERGROUND CABLES
Nine thousand three hundred and fifty-five (9,355) feet of lead covered cable was installed in underground conduits in the following locations: Two thousand five hundred and twenty-four (2,524) feet of 8 conductor in Broadway from Franklin street to River street; one thousand seven hundred and sixty-seven (1,767) feet of 6 conductor from River street to Cleveland street; one thousand six hundred and seventy (1,670) feet of 2 con- ductor from Cleveland street to the terminal near Som- erville line; three hundred and fourteen (314) feet of 6 conductor from Broadway to terminal pole on River street; two thousand three hundred and seventy (2,370) feet of 6 conductor in Massachusetts avenue from Park avenue to Box 73; seven hundred and ten (710) feet of 2 conductor in Broadway laterals.
POLICE SIGNAL SYSTEM
Police Box 22 was installed on same post with F. A. Box 271 at Mystic and Summer streets and Boxes 16, 25 and 41 were changed to junction boxes.

At the Town Meeting held on March 3, 1924, William S. Fairchild was elected member of the Board for the term of three years. The Board organized on March 10 with the choice of Clarence A. Moore as chairman.
APPOINTMENTS
At a meeting held on March 10, Harold N. Willis was appointed Clerk of the Board, water registrar, pur- chasing agent and bookkeeper. May 5, George E. Ahern was appointed Superintendent of Public Works. These appointments were for the year ending April 1, 1925.
MEETINGS
The meetings are held Monday evenings. During the year the Board held thirty-seven meetings.

HIGHWAY DIVISION.
No unusual conditions developed, the year being as near normal as possible as far as highway requirements were concerned. Public streets were treated with either tar or asphaltic oil at a cost of $19,131.02, and were repaired and cleaned at an expense of $25,891.06. Four thousand, five hundred forty-eight dollars and fifty-two cents was expended on the care and repair of the storm drain system and $14,082.38 was expended on improv- ing the condition of gravel and permanent sidewalks; 4,594.87 square yards of temporary tar walks were re- topped at an expense of $5,266.19.
The reconstruction of Massachusetts avenue was continued and a section on the north side between Mara-' thon and Winter streets, 550 feet long, between Oxford and Everett streets, 454 feet long, between Wyman and Palmer streets, 255 feet long, and on the south side from Barnes Lane to opposite Tufts street, 414 feet long, and from Chandler street 453 feet westerly were rebuilt with Hassam Compressed Concrete Pavement at a total cost of $19,976.81.
The reconstruction of Massachusetts avenue started in 1917 and every year thereafter, with the exception of 1918, a certain amount of reconstruction work has been done, in all. 14,066 running feet have been laid.

ARLINGTON TOWN REPORT
The Metropolitan District Commission will bring its new fifty-six inch water main into Arlington this year, installing in Pleasant street from the Belmont line to Swan street and via Swan street to Massachusetts avenue and thence down Broadway to Palmer street.
The Metropolitan District Commission is also pro- gressing with the Valley sewer so-called. This sewer starts in West Medford connecting there with the present Metropolitan main, crosses under the Mystic River into Arlington at Medford street and thence by the most feasible routes up the Valley of Mill Brook as far as Forest street. It is expected that part of this sewer will be available some time this year.
Table 2 will show the expenditure for the year on Snow and Ice, Street Construction and Storm Drains.
The value of the property controlled by the High- way Division, January 1, 1925, amounted to $42,138.50, classified as follows:

ARLINGTON TOWN REPORT
During the year the equivalent of eleven thousand, two hundred and forty-two single cartloads of ashes were collected and hauled to various dumps, an increase of thirteen per cent. over the previous year. Two thousand six hundred and seven wagonloads of waste material were collected and deposited, an increase of eighteen per cent. Five hundred and forty-five cords of garbage were collected, an increase of ten per cent.

SEWER DIVISION
Thirteen thousand, two hundred and one feet of main sewer were laid during the year, and three hundred and seventy-two connections were made with the mains. In addition the town purchased six thousand, nine hundred and ninety-seven feet of main sewer in Allen Park in- stalled by private parties in 1923 under the supervision of the Town Engineer. Details of this work, together with the cost of maintenance, will be found in Tables 4, 5 and 6.
