Arlington is situated six miles northwest of Boston, in latitude 42 deg., 25 min. north; longitude 71 deg., 09 min. west at an elevation above mean tide of from 4 to 377 feet.


Massachusetts Avenue at Pleasant Street, elevation, 48 feet.


Massachusetts Avenue at Park Avenue, elevation, 155 feet.


Park Circle at Eastern Avenue (base of standpipe), elevation, 377 feet.


Crescent Hill Avenue at Park Place, elevation, 281 feet.


The Town and a part of what is now Belmont were set off from Cambridge and incorporated as West Cambridge in 1807. The name was changed from West Cambridge to Arling- ton in 1867.

I respectfully submit my report as Superintendent of Wires for the year ending December 31, 1927.


STREET LIGHTING


During the year there were twenty-eight (28) No. 75 lamps, ten (10) No. 70 lamps and sixty-one (61) No. 20 lamps installed as follows: Twenty-eight (28) No. 75 lamps in the new underground district on Massachusetts Avenue between Medford and Central Streets; three (3) No. 70 lamps on Massa- chusetts Avenue between Harlow and Franklin Streets, three (3) on Massachusetts Avenue between Bartlett Avenue and Schouler Court, one (1) on Massachusetts Avenue beyond Lake Street, one (1) on Massachusetts Avenue corner of Winter Street, one (1) at Broadway at Warren Street, one (1) on Park Avenue near B. & M. Station; four (4) No. 20 lamps on Appleton Street beyond George Street; three (3) on Alfred Road, one (1) on Belknap Street, four (4) on Bow Street, two (2) on Cornell Street, two (2) on Dartmouth Street, two (2) on Exeter Street, one (1) on Florence Avenue, two (2) on Ford- ham Street, eight (8) on Gray Street, two (2) on Maynard Street, one (1) on Mystic Street, two (2) on Mystic Lake Drive, nine (9) on Newport Street, two (2) on Old Mystic Street, ten (10) on Palmer Street, one (1) on Pond Lane, three (3) on Rangeley Road, and two (2) on Sherborn Street.

ORNAMENTAL LIGHTING SYSTEM


50 Watt lamps, multiple, burning from 30 minutes after sundown to 11 P.M., 1,695 hours 49


Two (2) of these lamps on Pleasant Street and two (2) on Academy Street corner of Maple Street burn all night. Four (4) on the post at the corner of Massachusetts Avenue and Pleasant Street were discontinued and replaced with a No. 75 lamp, leaving forty-five (45) in service.


INSPECTION OF WIRES IN BUILDINGS


Two thousand and two (2,002) permits for electrical con- struction were issued at fifty (50c) cents for each permit.


There were two thousand eight hundred and sixty-three (2,863) inspections made; and one thousand eight hundred and seventy-nine (1,879) installations approved.


No fires were caused by defective wiring during the year.


POLES AND WIRES ON STREETS


The Edison Company the Telephone Company, and the Boston Elevated Railway installed eighty-four (84) new poles, replaced one hundred and sixteen (116) poles; and relocated four (4) poles on public streets during the year.


FIRE ALARM SYSTEM


There were six (6) Fire Alarm boxes installed as follows: Box 13 on Massachusetts Avenue, opposite Park Boulevard,

and 131 installed in the place of 13 at the corner of Henderson and Sawin Streets. Box 172 moved to Chandler Street, corner of Herbert Road. Box 173 installed on Milton Street, corner of Herbert Road. Box 161, Pond Lane near Boat House. Box 391, Mill Street, corner of Summer Street. Box 481, Forest Street, near Brand Street. Box 731, Aberdeen Road, opposite Inverness Road.


Box 174 is ordered and paid for and will be installed on Milton Street, corner of Brooks Avenue, as soon as it is com- pleted.


The Town of Winchester completed their construction to meet ours on the 23rd day of November and Mutual Aid for Winchester and Arlington went into effect on that date.


The William Penn tower bell was installed on a structure in the Boston Elevated yard at the Heights and was connected to the Fire Alarm System on the 10th day of October.


OVERHEAD AND UNDERGROUND CABLES


Five thousand seven hundred and fourteen (5,714) feet of four conductor fibrex cable was installed on Pond Lane, Fal- mouth Road, and Tanager Street. One thousand three hundred and thirty-six (1,336) feet of two conductor fibrex cable was installed on Mill Street. One thousand one hundred and ninety (1,190) feet of four conductor lead was drawn in from Fire Alarm Headquarters to the second pole on Pond Lane; and eight hundred and eighty-five (885) feet of two conductor lead was drawn in Massachusetts Avenue from Fire Box 72 to the bell tower.


POLICE SIGNAL SYSTEM


There were two boxes installed in the following locations: Box 221, Falmouth Road at Highfield Road; Box 414, Ap- pleton Street, corner Ashland Street.

Box 23 was moved from Mystic Street at Old Mystic Street to Davis Avenue, Box 47 was moved from Park Avenue, corner Prospect Avenue, to Eastern Avenue, corner Hillcrest Street, and Box 32 on Massachusetts Avenue near Grove Street was moved to Massachusetts Avenue near Schouler Court.


The new switchboard and apparatus at the new Police Station was cut over and put in commission on June 15th, 1927.

The Board of Public Works herewith submits its annual report for the year ending December 31, 1927.


At the Town Meeting held on March 7, 1927, William S. Fairchild was elected member of the Board for the term of three years. The Board organized on March 14 with the choice of James R. Smith as chairman.


APPOINTMENTS


At a meeting held on March 28, S. Alfred Benson was appointed Clerk of the Board, Water Registrar and Purchasing Agent. March 28, George E. Ahern was appointed Super- intendent of Public Works. These appointments were for the' year ending April 1, 1928.


MEETINGS


The meetings are held Monday evenings. During the year the Board held fifty-two regular and nine special meetings.

HIGHWAY DIVISION


This year sections of Mystic Street and Massachusetts Avenue were reconstructed at a total cost of $29,481.40. Mystic Street from Massachusetts Avenue to Summer Street, a distance of 1,900 feet, was reconstructed with Simasco Asphalt Pavement, guaranteed for five years, at a net cost of $7,058.39. Massachusetts Avenue on the southerly side, from Pleasant Street to Academy Street, 1,065 feet, and from Lowell Street, both sides, to near Paul Revere Road, 2,200 feet, was recon- structed with a Vulcanized Asphalt Pavement, which is covered by a five year guarantee, at net cost of $22,423.01.


Fourteen thousand seven hundred and fifty-six dollars and eight cents was expended in surfacing public streets with either a tar or asphaltic oil. Thirty thousand four hundred and six dollars and forty-six cents was expended in maintaining and cleaning streets; of this amount $4,453.84 was spent exclusively on Massachusetts Avenue.


The maintenance division of the Highway Department this year, in addition to the regular maintenance and cleaning work, has resurfaced Mill Street its entire length, and also after

patching Pleasant Street treated the same with a surface treatment of hot asphalt and crushed stone from Massachusetts Avenue to the Belmont line.


Five thousand and fifty-seven dollars and ninety-six cents was expended in the care and repair of the storm drain system. Six thousand five hundred and twenty-two dollars and eighty- nine cents was expended upon the upkeep of gravel sidewalks and $3,659.08 on the care and repair of permanent sidewalks.
