ANNUAL TOWN MEETING.


ESSEX, ss.


To SAMUEL HARDING, Constable of the Town of Lynnfield, GREETING. In the name of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, you are hereby required to notify the Inhabitants of the Town of Lynnfield, qualified to vote in Town affairs, to meet at the TOWN HALL, in said Town, on MONDAY, the THIR- TEENTH day of MARCH, next, at 12.30 o'clock, P. M., to act on the following articles, viz. :-


ARTICLE I. To choose a Moderator.


ART. 2. To choose all necessary Town. Officers.


ART. 3. To hear the Report of Town Officers and act thereon.


ART. 4. To raise money for Town Expenses the current year.


ART. 5. To raise money for support of Schools the current year.


ART. 6. To raise money for the repair of Highways, and de- termine how the same shall be expended.


ART. 7. To determine the manner of Collecting Taxes the current year.


ART. S. To set a time when the Collector of Taxes shall settle his list.


ART. 9. To see if the Town will authorize the Treasurer to hire money, if necessary, to meet the demands of the Town.


ART. 10. To see if the Town will authorize the Collector to charge interest on all Taxes not paid at the time he is required to settle his account.

TOWN WARRANT.


ART. II. To see if the Town will appropriate a sum of money for the observance of Memorial Day.


ART. 12. To see what action the Town will take in regard to a suit commenced against the Town by George W. Pray.


ART. 13. To see if the Town will appropriate a sum of money to be expended on Jeffry's Hill (so called) or take any * action thereon.


ART. 14. To see what action the Town will take in relation to the way leading from Salem Street to Suntaug Lake.


ART. 15. To see if the Town will instruct its Selectmen to request the Eastern Railroad Co. to place a flag-man at each of its crossings in this Town.


ART. 16. To see if the Town will join with the First Con- gregational Society in painting the building occupied by them jointly.


And you are directed to serve this Warrant by posting attested copies thereof in the usual manner.


Hereof fail not and make due return of this Warrant with your doings thereon, to the Town Clerk at the time and place of said meeting.

SCHOOL REPORT.


TO THE CITIZENS OF LYNNFIELD :


The pupils in our schools, during the past year, have been instructed in a manner creditable to their teachers ; and have profited by their instructions, in many cases, to a degree highly commendable to themselves.


The hours of school time should be hours of instruction, of active exercise of mind, and of personal influence of the teacher, on both mind and heart of every pupil.


It is the duty, and should be the aim, of the teacher, to develop, in the child, the great art and power of a noble life; to teach him how to use his intellect; to make the most of time ; to train every mental power to alertness ; to perseverance ; and to acquire increase of strength, to grap- ple with and overcome difficulties. In accomplishing this noble and arduous work, the faithful teacher will endeavor to correct the pupils' habits of indolence; to soothe and discipline hasty tempers ; to encourage the timid ; to con- vince the over-confident of their ignorance ; and to show the superficial the practical need of a clear and full knowl- edge of their lessons. Nor is this all : the earnest teacher must observe that those who are quick to perceive and to acquire, and those who are slow to comprehend, need different modes of instruction ; that while the eager and frequent questions of the former deserve encouragement, the slower and less active powers of others are equally en- titled to patient attention, and, in all cases, it is wise to
