Report of Supervisor of Music.
TO THE SUPERINTENDENT OF SCHOOLS OF LYNNFIELD :
Dear Sir :- The schools of Lynnfield have had their first year in music, and for the most part a very satisfactory one.
In the report of last year I spoke of the enthusiasm with which both pupils and teachers entered upon their work, the spirit man- ifested was excellent, and that is the telling feature in every school. If the spirit of the school is right and healthy, any task is not too difficult to be undertaken.
The teachers who commenced my work grasped the idea, and made rapid advancement. At the beginning of the September
32
term, I was somewhat dismayed to find three-fourths of the teach- ing force had been changed. From a Supervisor stand-point, that is often disastrous, as those coming in may need some time to acquire new ways, and take up different ideas. A constant change retards the progress so much that a special teacher re- gards the work as nearly thrown away.
I would like to repeat by way of emphasising the idea ad- vanced in the last report, that the progress of the work does not depend so much upon the Supervisor, as upon the individual teacher, and to her belongs what credit may attend it. The Su- pervisor may plan, direct and show the way, but the regular teacher must perform most of the mork. Some of the new teachers have grasped the situation, and their work shows corre- spondingly.
The work attempted through the yerr has been notations, fix- ing musical terms and characters, sight reading, ear training, in- dividual work, chorus singing, one, two and three part choruses, songs, duetts and trios.
In closing allow me to speak particularly in favor of much in- dividual work. Each pupil should be required to sing an exer- cise just as he would read a paragraph from his book, and no one should be excused any more than he should from his arithmetic recitation.
The work is growing and it cannot help improving as it builds up from the lower grades successfully through the grammar schools.
At the Music Teachers' Institute held in Boston it was reported that nearly every town in the state had some form of special in- struction in music.
Respectfully yours,
GEORGE E. WALES,
Director of Music.

We call attention to the fact, that during the past year the public library has been removed from the small room occupied in the Town Hall, since the first establishment of the library, and is now located in what was formerly the Centre School building.
It was thought advisable to put the building in suitable con- dition for the use of the public library, and we have done so to the best of our ability.
It was found necessary to draw somewhat from our regular funds in addition to the balance of the George L. Hawkes fund which was shown in the last annual report.
It is hoped that in the near future we shall be able to open a reading room in connection with our library, provision having been made for the same in our new location.
36
We wish to acknowledge the courtesy shown us by the Select- men in granting the income of the Mary U. Nash Public Improve- ment Fund for the painting of the library building.
Also to acknowledge the gift of books from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, Mr. Henry F. Bond of Newton, Mrs. Mary A. Parsons and Mrs. Abbie F. Latham of Lynnfield Centre.
