During 1959 Reading Memorial High School served as a center once again for the administration of college board examinations in January, February, March and May. The same will be true in 1960. In addition, the Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test (new in 1959) was administered to 210 juniors and seniors in October, while the National Merit Qualifying Test was given in April.
The Guidance Department also conducted the screening of can- didates for the Remedial Reading Classes which began at the high school in September.
Many of the tests given since September have been machine scored by members of the staff, using the IBM test scoring machine we are now renting jointly with four other towns and which is presently housed in Stoneham. One important way in which this has helped has been the early preparation of D A T scores for use by homeroom teachers in counseling 8th grade pupils in the selection of their high school courses of study.
Mr. William O'Keefe, our capable Youth Adjustment Counselor. has started an interesting pilot study in group counseling with selected 8th grade pupils who have high indicated learning abilities, but who are low in achievement in certain areas. The group has been meet- ing once a week with Mr. O'Keefe to discuss factors which may be affecting the achievement of individual members. Attendance is purely voluntary and has been very good to date.
Plans have been made to hold in-service training classes for teach- ers who would like to learn how to administer the 1960 revision of the Stanford-Binet Test. These classes are scheduled to start on Wed- nesday, January 27, 1960, and twenty-four teachers have signed up for the course. It is hoped that this program will provide enough qualified testers in our elementary schools and in the junior high school to insure individual testing of all pupils suspected of very high or very low ability.
The counseling situation at the high school has been eased tem- porarily, at least, by enlisting the services of the Assistant Principals, Mr. Alton C. Bennett and Miss Florence G. Nichols, as counselors. As much as their other duties will permit, Miss Nichols and Mr. Ben- nett have devoted every spare moment to the counseling of freshmen pupils. Mr. Bennett has ben working with the boys and Miss Nichols with the girls. How long this arrangement can be continued is a moot question, however. It is not likely that enough time will be available as incoming classes show sizeable increases over grad- uating classes. It is also highly desirable that we retain the practice of assigning a counselor to a class as it enters the high school and to have him counsel that class until it is graduated. To do this properly it will be necessary to increase the time allotted for counseling for each counselor. Miss Helen Hart, the counselor for the present senior class, has 5 periods in which to counsel approximately 250 pupils. If she is assigned to the class which will enter R.M.H.S. in September of 1960, she will be required to counsel somewhat over 350 pupils.
118
Obviously, with an increased load of 100 or more pupils, Miss Hart will have to become a full-time counselor. In the same way it will become necessary for Mr. John Pacino, counselor for the present junior class, to become a full-time counselor in the following year.
The need for more guidance personnel at the junior high school level is made evident by the fact that we cannot qualify for National Defense Act monies (except for testing) because we cannot meet the liberal ratio of one full-time counselor (or equivalent) to each 500 pupils. The situation will worsen considerably when the new junior high school is completed and grades 7, 8 and 9 are split and housed in two separate buildings. We should plan ahead and provide for a full- time counselor at each building at an early date.
Respectfully submitted,
ARA A. KARAKASHIAN
REPORT OF THE SUPERVISOR OF HEALTH
All essential health services - testing of vision, hearing and physical appraisals, with the attending notices of failures and parental conferences - were completed for the school year ending in June 1959. The Annual Report on Vision and Hearing Testing, submitted to the Department of Public Health, is as follows:
Vision
Hearing
Number of pupils tested
3679
3679
Number of pupils who failed
111
45
Number of pupils seen by specialist
110
43
Number of pupils accepted as correct referrals

The program of physical examinations was completed for the school year by Dr. Robert W. Wakeling and all negative findings were inter- preted to parents in home conferences, telephone conferences or by letter. Annual examinations are given in grades one, three, six and nine. The stepup in the athletic program, with increased participation, has added materially to the number to be examined through the school year. Last year the number examined was approximately 1290.
Three hundred and twenty-two children were cared for at the Dental Clinic. The children receive a high quality of service from the Dental Hygienist and Dentists. The request for dental service is beyond what can be done under the present budget. An increase in appropria .. tion is needed.
The annual program of inoculation with Triple and Double Antigen (Diphtheria, Pertussis, Tetanus) was held in the elementary schools and grade 9 in the spring. Four clinics for infants and children were held in the Town Building. A total of 843 school children and 64 babies received inoculation.
119
A program of Tuberculin skin testing was established in the schools in September, in accordance with the recommendation of the State Department of Public Health. This program is in cooperation with the Board of Health. The Nurses of the Visiting Nurse Association assisted at the various clinics. It was decided to start with the pupils in grade one. The results were as follows:
Per cent tested
89%
Number tested
379
Positive
0
Negative
379
The Annual Census of the Physically Handicapped, due each No- vember, contained the names of 41 children this year - 13 of these being new reports. Nine were dropped from the list. as recovered, 7 moved to other towns. Much time is spent in behalf of these children. There are 3 children reported on the Annual Census of the Blind, an increase of 1. Arrangements have been made for 14 pupils to receive home teaching as they are physically unable to attend school.
There has been an increase in the number cared for because of injury or illness. One hundred and fifty-two children were taken to the doctor's office for care, or, at the doctor's request, to the hospital or x-ray laboratory. The need for full-time health counseling in the High School is clearly indicated. Five hundred and nine pupils have been seen there since September.
The contribution of the nurse to the promotion of health in the schools is well recognized. She plays an important part in all phases of the school health program, health services, health instruction, safe and healthful school environment, and in the active development of home and community relationships.
Respectfully submitted,
MARGARET B. CLEWLEY, Supervisor of Health

To be eligible for admission to Grade 1 a child must have reached the age of five years and eight months on or before August 31st of the entering year. No provision is made for examination.
Upon entering school each child is required to present a birth certificate and a certificate of vaccination, or in the case of unsuccess- ful vaccination, a statement from a doctor certifying that three attempts to vaccinate have been made all of which have proved to be unsuc- cessful.
Registration of children entering school in September is held in the different schools during the month of May, announcement of exact time appearing in THE READING CHRONICLE a week or two before registration.
