REPORT OF THE FIRE DEPARTMENT
To the Honorable Board of Selectmen:
Gentlemen. The annual report of the Fire Department for the year ending December 31, 1915, is submitted as follows.
Change of wiring fire alarm system, a roll call of members, record of fires and alarms, value of buildings lost and damaged and insurance on same. Owing to a change made by the Telephone Company in the location of their central office, we were obliged to install a new line of wires from the Town Hall to the new office so the transmitter box could be placed there. The cost of this new line was about $300.00.
Another unlooked for sum of $28.82, was caused by a wire breaking in the air compressor. The motor had to be rewound.
Both hand engines were overhauled and put in good order.

Number of applications for permits to build a fire in the open, 267; permits granted, 252; number of calls from fire look-out stations, 39; all of which were investigated. Twenty-three calls were answered for grass and brush fires, an unusually large number compared with previous years owing to the severe drouth during the early spring months.
We now have a well equipped department with all articles necessary for forest fire work. I have investigated all fires and have sent reports of same to the State Forester.
Respectfully submitted,

State, Town and County
Lowell Street, 2,200 feet macadam, cement beam bridge and 18 inch tile culvert, 120 feet long. Total cost, $6,540.00.
Our streets are in a fair condition, but by decreasing the amount raised each year they cannot but show the effect. We were unfortunate again this year to have $3,390 taken from our appropriation.
We have placed catchbasins and drains in needed places, which has been well appreciated.
The crushing plant which was bought by the Selectmen proved to be a complete running plant and a great help to the work on Lowell Street. With a slight increase caused by the wet weather while the work at the bridge was in progress over the special appropriation of $2,000 from the Town and the like sum from the State and County, the macadam on Lowell Street was extended 2,200 feet, the abutments at the bridge were extended and pointed and a cement beam bridge. We also put in an 18 inch tile culvert, 120 feet long, beyond the layout of 1915.
Respectfully submitted,
W. B. McINTOSH, Superintendent of Streets.

REPORT OF INSPECTOR OF ANIMALS
To the Honorable Board of Selectmen, Wilmington, Mass .:
I wish at this time to submit my Report as Inspector of Animals. During the year, the annual inspection of each individual stable and animal was postponed owing to the out- break of foot and mouth disease, which played such havoc and caused so much loss to the whole country.
At the present, no cases being known to exist, orders have been received to proceed with the annual inspection, which will be completed as soon as possible and reports made out in compliance with such orders.
While the whole number of cattle kept in town are perhaps decreased in number, the places or stables where kept have in my opinion increased. Several people have purchased a cow for home use which, of course, necessitates a detailed report of each stable or enclosure, some thirty questions being asked regarding each one. The number of cattle shipped into the town by dealers has been more than previous, which no doubt was in a way due to Brighton being closed for so long a time, certain sections about us being free.
All cases of suspicion have been carefully looked over and disposed of as deemed best.
I want all to feel at liberty to report any cases of suspicion, bearing in mind the good of our community and especially that of our food supply.
153
I wish to thank all who have helped make the duties as inspector less arduous, and who have complied with suggestions made for the betterment of your stock. I will try and not suggest changes of an expensive nature, but what are really essential for the betterment of stock, food supply and pocket- book.
Yours very truly
C. H. PLAYDON, M.D.V., Inspector.
154
REPORT OF INSPECTOR OF MEATS AND PROVISIONS
Wilmington, January 31, 1916.
To the Honorable Board of Selectmen :
Gentlemen: I beg leave to submit my annual report. At the beginning of the year, two licenses were given for slaughtering. During the early autumn, Sebastian Becker removed his busi- ness to Woburn which was practically all the slaughtering in town, leaving Asa W. Boutwell the only licensed butcher in town.
During the year I have examined at the licensed slaughter houses, 75 beef; 426 hogs; 387 veal, and of that number I have condemed 3 beef, 21 hogs, 14 veal, as unfit for food. These carcasses were sent to the Whitman Pratt rendering works, Woburn.
Respectfully submitted,
J. HOWARD EAMES
Inspector.

REPORT OF TREE WARDEN
To the Honorable Board of Selectmen and Citizens of Wilmington :
During the year 1915, the street trees were less fortunate than in past years, much damage being due to high winds and storms. As in previous years much trimming has been done and dead trees removed.
Young trees were set out on Lowell Street from Perry's Corner to West Street and some were replaced on Burlington Avenue and Middlesex Avenue.
The trees have been cared for in regard to the elm leaf beetle; all the street trees and those requested by property owners were sprayed and found satisfactory, that being the only effective means.
The gypsy and brown-tail moths are handled under State supervision and seem to be suppressed effectively.
Respectfully submitted,
OLIVER A. McGRANE, Tree Warden.
