object is accomplished if we help each child express his own ideas in picture or hand-work.

In the winter term, following the Christmas vacation, we have been studying the drawing of objects with this essential aim in view : Ability to show how a thing looks (a) from the object ; (b) from imagination. This of course involves the drawing of familiar objects in the primary grades, and the application of the knowledge thus gained by using the objects in a picture, and perhaps making them in paper or cutting out to impress their shape on the child's mind and develop manual skill. In the intermediate and grammar grades we have advanced from drawing the object in good proportion merely to a study of the effects of foreshortening and distance on the ap- pearance of the objects.

The Spring term's work will deal mostly with the subject of color and design suitable for the decoration of objects for use and ornament in school, such as covers, calendars, graduation programs, etc. " It is no small matter to make a useful thing beautiful, yet if I am not mistaken, this is the highest aim of art."

In many instances individual pupils have shown a decided ability to draw especially well, and in every school the work shown is most encouraging.

Respectfully submitted,

HARRIET A. ELLIS.

Report of the Supervisor of Music.

This report covers the year beginning with the spring term of 1906 and ending with the winter term of 1907. Naturally the work of three consecutive terms is best seen in the spring, and wben study is taken up again in the fall the children show the effects of the long vacation in music as well as along other lines.

The many changes in the teaching force tended to retard ad- vancement for a time, but the new conditions were met in the right spirit and the gain made since the last report is commendable. Other things being equal the greatest progress is made where the teachers remain longest in charge, and it is unfortunate that so many changes seem to be unavoidable in our schools.

We have no schoolroom in Wilbraham containing less than three grades, and the majority have a larger number. Such being the case the results accomplished deserve a special word of appre- ciation.

Each June sends out a class trained in the rudiments of music, and each succeeding year thus far has shown a gain over its prede- cessors in theoretical knowledge and ability to use the voice. We cannot help wishing that, as the pupils of the public schools enter the Academy, they might continue their musical education by means of a free chorus class such as is held in the majority of High Schools.

The Weaver method has been used as heretofore and no change has been made during the past year in the carefully outlined course of study, the result obtained being such as to warrant us in con- tinuing the same method. The New Educational Series of Music Readers published by Ginn & Co. have been adopted, and we are using a more advanced set of sight-singing slips than heretofore.

The pupils of the grammar grades furnished the music for the

39

graduating exercises of the Ninth Grades last June in an acceptable manner.

Not only in the schoolroom, but in the social and religious life of the town, the results of careful training in music are becoming more thoroughly realized. The task of preparing children for a public musical performance is far easier than it was seven years ago.

Parents and friends are cordially invited to visit our schools and see and hear what is being done, but if it is impossible for them to give us the inspiration of their presence, we trust they will at least do all in their power to encourage the children in using the voice God has given them. In order to become a musical nation we must have the foundations firmly laid in our homes and schools.

Respectfully submitted,

MARY ELIZABETH HOWARD,

Supervisor of Music.
