Every thoughtful person has been careful about fires this year but a few careless ones have caused much loss.

The law in regard to building fires has been violated in only one or two instances of little consequence. Very few asked for permits during the dry season and none were granted then. Damp weather during the open deer season was very fortunate.

Our fires have been caused almost entirely by the railroad, and careless smokers. It seems too bad that large areas of valuable timber must be sacrificed to someones' uncontrolled desire for a whiff of tobacco smoke.

The State Forester continually urges us to purchase a fire- fighting outfit, consisting of a wagon, extinguishers, chemical holders, cans, rakes and shovels. I wish this matter might be discussed fully.

We are still free from gypsy and brow-tail moths; but the chestnut bark disease has attacked several trees in Glendale. Young sprouts are susceptible. Beginning with a brown blister on the bark, it spreads in the cambium layer, killing a tie tree in about three years or less.

HENRY I. EDSON, Forest Warden.
