Report of Salvage Committee

Mr. A. G. Miller, chairman of the Salvage Program for the town of Wilbraham reports that the townspeople certainly did better than 100 percent in following the call of the War Production Board in gathering and donating all kinds of scrap metal and rubber during the October 1942 drive.

Thanks to the "Minute Men," L. N. Johnson, James Haclett, Holton Pease, Roland Bennett, A. L. Gruszka, A. L. Baker, John Hunter, Ed Brosch, W. E. Logan, A. L. and R. McDonald, E. A. Jackson, Frederick Miller, Joseph Nietupski,

45

Mrs. Harold Howe and Mr. and Mrs. H. O. McCracken, as well as the Boy Scouts under the leadership of Joseph King, and the help from our Selectmen in authorizing Supt. of High- ways, Mr. Fred Phelps to use the town truck for transporta- tion, 38 tons of metal was gathered. The quota as set for this town by the War Production Board was for one half this amount.

Mr. Miller received $274.00 for this scrap metal which is being divided among the Wilbraham Organizations of USO Red Cross and Boy Scouts.

Well Child Conference

In June, 1942, for the first time in four years, the Well Child Conference Committee of the Wilbraham Women's Club conducted the Conference without the assistance of the medi- cal unit of the Massachusetts Department of Public Health. Dr. William Devlin, Pediatrician, served as Conference physi- cian and Mrs. Ruth O'Connell, Assistant Home Demonstra- tion Agent of the Hampden County Improvement League, as Nutritionist. Mrs. Russell Stage substituted for Mrs. O'Con- nell two days. While making appointments, the Committee discovered so much more interest in the Conference that a day more than was planned could have been used profitably. There. are at present approximately 30 children not enrolled at the 1942 Conference whose mothers are interested in the 1943 one.

CONFERENCE SUMMARY

Total number of children examined 88

Number who need vaccination 75

Number who need toxoid 37

Number who had toxoid at clinic 18

Number with postural defects 7

Number who need dental care 38

Number with nutritional defects 8

Number who need T. & A.

7

Number of families using raw milk

8

Number who need medical care 13

To quote Dr. Devlin - "The children examined are as a group exceedingly healthy. They show very few outstanding defects except the need of good dental hygiene and preventive dentistry." The closing of the Springfield Junior League Den- tal Clinic, which in the past offered free dental care, together with the fact that private dentists are so busy, makes it diffi- cult to obtain preventive dentistry in the preschool group.

Today more than ever before nutrition is an outstanding factor in the health and development of young children. To meet the need of specialized nutritional advice, Mrs. O'Connell visited with the nurse in seven families.

More calls for nursing service in Wilbraham have been received at the Visiting Nurse Association office this year, and the nurse on her home visits has noted a growing need for such a service. North Wilbraham is included in the regular nursing program of the Visiting Nurse Association, but as yet no such service is available in Wilbraham.

It has been a pleasure to work with the Committee, the Board of Public Welfare and the Selectmen whose interest and vision have established an excellent foundation for the future health and welfare of the community.
