PATENT CONE FURNACES.
PATENTED IN THE nited States, England & France.
The extensive use of this superior Furnace in the United States has acquired for it a reputation too well and favorably known to need more at this time than to call the special attention of those in want of the best possible means of warming dwellings, public buildings, &c., with pure. fresh, healthful heat, (free from that scorching, dry, red-hot iron licat, and coal gas, so common to hot air furnaces) to an examination of this superior invention, which represents a cluster of Cones, or tapering Radiators, over a broad, flaring- shallow fire-pot. These cones being large at the base. and small at the top, secure the great and important object of retaining and holding the smoke and gases back, in contact with the burning fuel-thus thoroughly consuming the gases while their heat is compressed up, into the cones, and made to impinge against and radiate from the tapering surfaces-thereby securing twice the heat from a given amount of coal that can be obtained from any other plan known to man. This furnace is very simple in its construction and easily managed, and much less liable to need repairs than any other plan of furnace in use.
Also, five sizes of PORTABLE FURNACES, on the same principle, that are giving perfect satisfaction. A special invitation is given to all interested in the heating and ventilation of buildings, to examine the above assortment of Furnaces.
CHILSON'S PATENT ELEVATED DOUBLE OVEN COOKING RANGE.
This very superior Range, now in so general use, needs only to be seen to under- stand the great improvements attained in this invention, over any other plan of Range in the United States. It is entirely new in principle-having five claims patented for improvements, not found in any other Range :- Its unparalleled economy in the consumption of fuel, its quick and even baking ovens, its patent self-regulating flues around the ovens (without the usual vexations complication of dampers found in the common Ranges), its cast-iron flue plates around the oven preventing loss of heat in the chimney. Its superior fine heavy castings, and general beauty of design and conveniences, cannot fail to commend themselves to all using Ranges. Sizes in variety for dweilings, hotels, &c., with or without Water Backs for Bath Boilers and other washing purposes; also, Hot Air Fixture for heating additional - rooms when desired. No housekeeper will long use any other plan of Range or Cooking Stove after once seeing this Range.
CHILSON'S NEW PARLOR STOVE.
Of all the innumerable plans of Stoves yet invented, this certainly surpasses them all-and every person desirous of seeing a perfect stove is invited to look at this one, whether wishing to purchase or not. Sizes adapted to parlors, chambers, offices, or stores, its improvement consists in its Great Heating Power, and Unparalleled Economy in Fuel. This is secured by retaining the heat in the base radiator of the Stove, (below the fire-grate), thus warming the FLOOR and LOWER CURRENTS of air in the room for a great distance around the Stove. instead of the heat being let off at the top of the stove, and the floor and lower currents of air in the room being cold, as is the case with the common stoves.
This Stove has an excellent arrangement for VENTIL ATING the Room, and at the same time it cuts off the Draft from the burning coal, so that a fire may be kept day and night from Fall till Spring by replen- ishing the fire once a day.
It has a lever-grate so arranged, that the ashes may be shaken out, or the fire let down into the ash-pan, WITHOUT MAKING ANY DUST in the room.
This Stove is very beautiful in its appearance, the Castings are very DURABLE, and have a very fine, smooth finish .- and, finally, it is altogether the most perfect Stove ever made.
On hand, and now making, a large assortment of the different Sizes; SOME OF WHICH ARE FITTED WITH AN OVEN AND BOILER, TO SERVE AS A PARLOR COOK STOVE, adapted to the Dining Room, &c.
ALSO -MANTEL GRATES, 'REGISTERS, VENTILATORS, STOVES, &c., &c. Special attention given to PUTTING UP Furnaces and Ranges, and the Ventilation of Buildings in any part of the country.

GREAT CURE!
Dr. LELAND'S, ANTI-RHEUMATIC BAND!
PERMANENTLY CURES
RHEUMATISM, IN ITS VARIOUS FORMS,
Gout and Neuralgia, Stiffness and Nervous Affec- tions, Erysipelas, General Eruptions, Impuri- ties of the Blood, and a Sure Cure for the Evil Effects of Mercury. n- - It is a conveniently arranged BAND or BELT, containing a medicated com- pound, to be worn around the body, about the waist, EQUALLY AFFECTING ALL PARTS, wherever the disease may be, and can be worn without injury to the most del- icate person. No change in the proper habits of living is required, and it en- tirely removes the disease from the system, without the fallacious use of powerful internal medicines, in such cases, which weaken and destroy the constitution, and give temporary relief only, by stupefying the system, and deadening its vitality. By this treatment, the medicinal properties contained in the BAND, being of a highly aromatic and volatile nature and capable of being readily absorbed through the pores of the skin, come into direct contact with the BLOOD and general circulation, without first passing through the process of digestion, which would tend, not only to detract from their curative powers, but to impair the internal organs and derange the digestion also .- Thus avoiding the injurious effects, so often the result of internal remedies, and effecting a perfect cure, by purifying and equalizing the circulation of the vital fluids, and restoring the parts affected to a healthy condition. This BAND is also a most powerful " ANTI-MERCURIAL AGENT,"-Calomel being the primary cause of a large part of the stiffness, Neuralgic Pains, and Rheu- matics, so prevalent-and will entirely relieve the system from its pernicious effects. Moderate cases are cured in a few days and we are constantly receiving un- doubted testimonials-to which we invite inspection at our office-of their effi- cacy in aggravated cases of long standing. Price Two Dollars. Sent by mail upon receipt of $2, or by express everywhere, with all necessary instructions from the principal office of ANTI-RHEUMATIC BANDI ANTI-RHEUMATIC BAND!

PREFACE.
-
In this volume which accompanies our new Map of Maine, we present to the public a very full Directory of persons who are engaged in the industrial pursuits of the State, so arranged as will be of convenient reference. This will furnish the means of ascertaining the persons and their employments in the numerous towns of the State. With this is con- nected an Advertising Department, which gives particular information of persons and places in their several localities, and of the materials and occupations about which they are engaged.
We have added to this large commercial department, a concise History of the State, from its first discovery to its separation from Mas- sachusetts in 1820; with a description of its Area and Surface, of its Rivers, Lakes and Mountains, and the present condition of the Aboriginal Inhabitants.
There will also be found in the following pages a brief account of the Literary, Philanthropic, Penal, Financial, and Commercial Institutions and Establishments of the State; copious Statistics of its commerce, agriculture, and manufactures; of its resources and wealth; of its population and progress; with a full and complete Register of its civi. government, including State and County officers.
We have aimed at thorough accuracy in these multifarious details, but with all our efforts, conscious of the imperfection of human machinery, there will undoubtedly be found errors. We trust, however, they are not serious, and will receive a partial judgment in view of the abundant stores of what is useful and correct.
In offering to the people of Maine, and of other parts of our country, the large mass of valuable information contained in this volume, and in the accompanying Map, which is one of the best executed, and most ac- curate maps ever published in the United States, we feel assured that our long and unwearied devotion to the work, and our vast outlay in prepar- ing it for the press, will be appreciated by a generous public, and espe- cially by the citizens of our own commonwealth, to whose favorable con- sideration it is now most respectfully submitted and dedicated.
