H. G. NEWTON, M. D., Eclectic Physician & Surgeon, PORTLAND, MAINE.
Dr. N., who was formerly Editor of " The Worcester Journal of Medicine," and has for sev- eral years been engaged in the successful practice of his profession, devotes his attention to, and solicits for treatment, the worst possible cases that can be found in the community.
He can if desired exhibit testimonials from people of undoubted truth and veracity, certifying to his perfect success in the most hopeless cases of disease, many of whom had sought in vain for relief from others. Although so fortunate
As never to have lost a case of Fever of any kind, yet his special attention for the last eight years, has been devoted to a NEW, SAFE, AND NEVER FAILING MODE
of treating diseases incident to the female system, by which he has acquired a high reputation. There are many cases of disease and suffering, which invalids suppose they must bear, and which must soon lead to an early grave, if neglected, that might be removed by a timely adoption of his rational and scientific mode of treatment. He subjects his patients to no injurious medication, using no preparation of Mercury, Antimony, nor Arsenic, but making a judicious selection of such remedies as are both innocent and sanative, and specifically adapted to each individual case.
All letters with a stamp enclosed will receive prompt and explicit answers, and be regarded as strictly confidential. Boarding places procured for patients from a distance if desired.

The Hand Machine sows from four to eight acres per hour, and the Horse-Power Machine, from ten to fifteen acres per hour, doing the work in a very superior manner. This Machine is unquestionably to the agriculturist, one of the most important and valuable inventions of the day. It is made in a SUBSTANTIAL AND DURABLE MANNER, and by RECENT IMPROVEMENTS has been brought to the HIGHEST PERFECTION. It saves four-fifths of the labor and time-enables any one, with a little experience, to sow with perfect regularity -and in consequence of the evenness with which it distributes the seed, causes a saving of from one- quarter to one-third of the seed ordinarily required. Farmers who have used this machine for two seasons say they would not BE WITHOUT ONE FOR FIVE TIMES ITS COST.

MAGEE PARLOR STOVE.
Which for economy, purity of air, ease of management, has no equal. They can be regulat - ed so as to give any amount of heat required; and unlike all other Anthracite Coal Burners, they ventilate the apartments quite as thoroughly as a wood fire, or open Franklin, producing a current of air at once moist, pure and agrecable. As none of the air which comes in contact with the Fire-Pot is used for respiration, the tendency to produce H adaches, so much coin- plained of by those using Stoves and Furnrces, is entirely obviated. The fire may be continu- ed throughout the entire season without once going out, and from one to four days without replenishing. These Stoves are beautiful in design, and finished in the most perfect manner. They give universal satisfaction to all who have adopted them.

TESTIMONIALS.
The regular organ swell is attached to this instrument, by which the effects of crescendo and dimin- uendo can be render- ed at the performer's will. The case is made of the best solid black walrut, and finished with oil.
PORTLAND, Feb. 4, 1861. Mr. J. D. Cheney : I take pleasure in commending to the public the Musical Instrument manufactured by you in this city, and called the "Harmonium." One of them has been in use in the "Second Universalist Society," occupying the "Mechanics' Hall," for nearly a year, and has given entire satisfaction to the congregation. The Instrument is finely adapted to all country churches, being preferable in tone and power to any small sized church Organ of the common style, while the price is less than one-half as much.
Z. THOMPSON, Pastor of the 2d Univ. Society in Portland.
GORHAM, Feb. 23, 1861. From a personal acquaintance with the above described Instrument, I take pleasure in adding my testimony that all which is therein stated is strictly true.
JOSEPH COLBY, Pastor of the M. E. Church, Gorham, Me.
PORTLAND, March 25, 1861. Mr. Cheney: In answer to your inquiry, whether the'Melodeon made by you for Masonic Hall gives satisfaction, I am glad to be able to say, that so far as I have heard, all are well satisfied with it; and in my own judgment it is one of the best instruments of the kind which I have heard.
Truly yours, IRA BERRY.
PORTLAND, January 10, 1857. Mr. Cheney: Having been well acquainted with the Instruments from your shop, I cheerfully give you my opinion of their merit. They are unquestionably of the first class of Reed Instruments, both in quality of tone, and thoroughness of manufacture. I am acquainted with those made in most other shops in the country, and have devoted much attention to such matters; but I would prefer one of your Instruments in my family to any others whatever. And I would say the same for churches.
Yours truly,
-

Permanent Electrotype Editions.
FOR DISTRICT SCHOOLS. New Primary Arithmetic. Intellectual Arithmetic.
Common School Arithmetic.
-
For HIGH SCHOOLS & ACADEMIES.
National arithmetic.
Treatise on Algebra.
-
Elements of Geometry & Trigonometry.
The Last of the Series, (just published), is a new edition of the ELEMENTS OF GEOMETRY, with the addition of a Com- plete System of Plane and Spherical TRIGON METRY, analytically treated and practically applied.
Greenleaf's Geometry has been adopted as a text-book in several of the STATE NORMAL SCHOOLS, and in upwards of sixty Academies in New England alone.
These books, in their revised and improved form, have been pronounced, by an eminent mathematician,
" Standard and imperishable works of their kind,"
Being a consecutive series by one author, graded to the wants of Primary, Intermedia te, Grammar, and High Schools, Academies, Normal Schools, and Commercial Colleges, now so extensively used in the best schools of every State in the Union as to have become
A NATIONAL STANDARD.
This series, in its revised and improved form, surpasses all others,-
1. In the lucid, progressive, and strictly philosophical ARRANGEMENT of the several parts and subjects.
2. In the clearness and conciseness of the DEFINITIONS and RULES, and in the com- pleteness of the ILLUSTRATIONS.
3. In the logical strictness and simple elegance of its ANALYSIS.
4. In the variety and practical character of the PROBLEMS ; which, from their na- ture, tend to interest the pupil, exercise his ingenuity, and secure useful mental discipline.
5. In the scientific accuracy of all its statements of facts.
6. In being a CONSECUTIVE SERIES, graded to the wants of PRIMARY, INTERME- DIATE, GRAMMAR, and HIGH SCHOOLS, ACADEMIES, NORMAL SCHOOLS, and COMMERCIAL COLLEGES; it having been found that less than FOUR BOOKS on Arith- metic cunnot be successfully used for FOUR GRADES of schools ; and that the Algebra, Geometry, and Trigonometry in a mathematical course should be by the author of the Arithmetics, in order to follow most advantageously as a part of the same system.
7. In the neat and durable MECHANICAL EXECUTION of the several books,-an important consideration, too often disregarded,-and in the CHEAP prices at which they are sold.
GREENLEAF'S ARITHMETICS are now in general use, and with great satisfaction, in all the Common Schools and Academies in MAINE, so that UNIFORMITY, which is so desirable in school text books, has been secured throughout the State. It is also about the only Arithmetical series which is now used in Massachusetts and the other New England States.
Terms of introduction liberal ; all interested are invited to correspond freely with us. OUR DESCRIPTIVE CATALOGUE furnished to Teachers and School Directors, on application by mail.
