BAILEY'S ISLAND.

B AILEY'S ISLAND is recognized by the summer visitors of Casco

Bay to be one of the finest spots along the Maine coast, situ- ated as it is some twenty miles from Portland, a sail of two hours on the Harpswell Steamboat line. The Island is about two and a half miles in length, and very narrow, in some

places not over one hundred feet, having an elevation of something over seventy-five feet. No more beautiful spot could be desired where one could wish to spend a vacation, free from the strife and confusion of the busy city.

Although far removed from the surroundings of the main land, the accommodations are such that one can readily reach any of the many islands of the Bay at almost any time, the Harpswell Steam- boat line touching two points of the island five times a day. The Northern and Southern portions of the island are well covered with fine fir trees, which add greatly to the beauty of the surroundings.

and along the Southern side can be had no finer view of the broad Atlantic as far as the eye can see, and to watch the breakers here is a sight that will always linger in the memory of one who loves nature in all its glory. North end of the island is what is called Water Cove, which makes a fine harbor, and where one can see every day fishing vessels at their anchors On the eastern side of the bank one may visit Giant Steps, a very curious freak of nature, these steps being some forty feet in length, and having the appear- ance of being built by man. They set back in a recess of perpen- dicular ledge, and are of iron stone, the ledge being of a soft nature. There is another curious rock formation near at hand, called Thun- der Hole, which is a cave in the ledge, where the water rushing in and out makes a noise that sounds like distant thunder, hence the name Thunder Hole. No finer place can be imagined for those who wish an afternoon's rest, surrounded by beautiful trees and the rest- less sea.

On the Western side is Mackerel Cove, one of the most beautiful harbors on the coast of Maine. This cove, fifteen hundred feet in length, the mouth being very narrow, has a depth of water sufficient to accommodate vessels of heavy tonnage. Here lovers of sea bath- ing will find all they would desire, and every day during the summer season the beach is spotted with bathers enjoying their delightful pastime.

Bailey Island has, without doubt, more fine summer cottages than any two islands on the coast, and are principally owned and occupied by New York and Boston parties. The hotel accommo- dations are equal to any on the bay, it being the pride of all to leave nothing undone for the comfort of the summer visitors. The roads are all that could be desired for bicycling and driving.

Golf Links are one of the many attractions.

The Island is part of the town of Harpswell.
