PORTLAND (city), Cumberland Co. It is the smallest town in the State in superficial area, occupying a small peninsular three miles long and three- fourths of a mile wide in Casco Bay, and sixteen islands and parts of islands from three to ten miles from the city. The Indian name was "Machigonne " The first settlers were George Cleeves and Richard Tucker in 1632. In 1637 a charter was obtained from Gorges and the territory became known as Casco. In 1658 Massachusetts applied the name Falmouth to Casco Neck and other territory about the harbor, and it was so called until its incorpo- ration in 1786 as Portland. In March, 1820, the district of Maine was sep- arated from Massachusetts and admitted into the Union as a State and Portland became its capital, but changed to Augusta in 1831.
