MICHIGAN ANNUAL CONFERENCE

[1918

School teacher, and was remarkably successful in leading people to Christ. With her husband she labored at Mt. Pleasant, Evart, Woodland, Orleans, Lowell, Quincy, Sturgis, Muskegon, Portland, Haven Church, Jackson, also while her husband was Superintendent of Coldwater and Big Rapids Districts.

She is survived by her husband and her only child, Nellie Francis, the wife of Rev. E. P. Bennett, pastor of the First Methodist Episcopal Church in Pontiac, and by three grandchildren.

For many years Mrs. Bray had been an invalid. She had suffered con- stantly from weakness and pain, yet she was very bright, cheerful and brave-hearted. Her mind was exceedingly active. She was full of in- terest in the various phases of human life around her. She was constantly planning to do good things for people and many persons were inspired by her to go on errands of kindness. She was greatly interested in all the affairs of the Church. The Church and its ministry were very dear to her. Her home was a benediction and an inspiration to many.

These verses express the feelings of a woman who feels that her life was transformed by Mrs. Bray's influence and long continued kindness.

A FRIEND.

I had a friend, a woman friend most dear, Who ran upon some grace in me, And loved me for it; fostered tenderly The grace itself; then saw my faults grow clear On close approach, but bravely drew more near,

Believing these were transcient; earnestly I set myself to mend myself, since she Did love me still, extending hope and cheer.

Once, all unconsciously, by one swift move, Unstudied as a child's, she let me see The angel in her, standing there to prove How close God comes to us invisibly; And looking in her eyes with reverent awe,

I joyed to love the creature that I saw.

MARION LISLE.

She received the tenderest care. For the latter years of her life it was her husband's life occupation to care for her. Her daughter and son gave to her frequent ministeries.

Her funeral was a wonderful service. Tributes to her life were given by four men, who had been her pastors, Robert H. Bready, M. D. Currel, E. A. Armstrong, W. M. Puffer and by the District Superintendent, C. S. Wheeler.

Her body was laid to rest beside that of her granddaughter and name- sake in the beautiful Fairview Cemetery at South Bend, Indiana. W. M. PUFFER.

MRS. SARAH R. FORCE. :

Sarah R. Force was born Sept. 16th, 1831, the youngest of a family of nine children of Jehiel and Charlotte Hall of Elizabethtown, N. J. In

MEMOIRS

1852 she was united in marriage to James P. Force, a member of the North Indiana Conference. In 1868 her husband joined the Michigan Conference, and for 15 years served various charges. Many of the older Methodists remember him with great love and respect. In 1889 he passed to his reward, and since then Sister Force lived very happily with her children, Mrs. Cora Gregory and Mrs. W. B. Harris of Dowagiac, Mich., and Mrs. H. S. Hover of Fenton, Mich. Another daughter, Mrs. Rockwell Clancy, died in 1891 after serving the church faithfully at Lucknow, India, for three years, and the same length of time at Agra and one year at Burma.

Rev. Rockwell Clancy, who loved her as a son, testifies to her Christian character in the following words:

"Sister Force's life was beautiful. In her young girlhood she entered into a blessed fellowship with Jesus Christ. During the years of her hus- band's ministry she led many precious souls to Christ. She gladly gave her daughter, Lottie, as a missionary to India, and at a time when her health was poor and she greatly needed her at home. She had the true missionary spirit through her whole Christian life."

Her highest ambition was to please her Master. Jesus was to her the sweetest name, and in the fulness of a ripened Christian experience she shed around her an influence that was a blessing to all who came into her presence.

During her last years she was too frail to attend church services, but through prayer and the Holy Word she kept her heart light and the blessed hope like an anchor held her steadfast. She was cared for tenderly by her daughters and at midnight on the 14th of October, 1917, she slipped away to be with her Lord. Funeral services were held from the home of her daughter, Mrs. C. E. Gregory, Dowagiac, Mich., conducted by Rev. H. D. Skinner, a former pastor, and she was laid to rest beside her husband in the Keeler cemetery.

MRS. M. A. OLDT.

Ida May, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Crotser, and wife of Rev. M. A. Oldt, was born in Fulton, Michigan, February the 25th, 1877, and Thursday morning, May the 16th, 1918, after a brief illness, the curtain fell upon the last scene of her beautiful life, and her pure spirit without fear or misgiving, went away to a land where there is no night, where no shadows ever gather on the pathway of the redeemed, and where sickness, sorrow, pain and death are felt and feared no more.

In early childhood her parents removed to Ludington, Michigan, where she spent her girlhood days. In October, 1894, she was united in marriage to Rev. M. A. Oldt. To this union four daughters were born; Celestia, Elsie, Marguerite and Areldine.

Mrs. Oldt had a very pleasing personality, a sunny disposition, an easy grace of manner, and a kindly unselfish regard for the feelings of others that won the hearts of all with whom she associated.

MICHIGAN ANNUAL CONFERENCE

[1918

Hers was indeed a beautiful character, and the words which spontan- eously rise to the lips in contemplation of her life, are but the echo of those from the lips of the Master, which we are sure greeted her into the glory world. "Well done, good and faithful servant," and we use that word good in its broadest sense and meaning, for she was indeed good herself, and a source of good to all about her.

She was a good wife, true and devoted. Standing in her place she faced the responsibilities of life courageously, and discharged with fidelity the duties imposed upon her, and the husband ever felt that he had in her a helpmeet indeed.

She was a good mother, tender and affectionate. The old Jewish saying that God could not be everywhere so he made mothers, was never by this mother misrepresented. She received the children whom God gave her as a sacred trust, to be taught and trained for one end only His glory.

She was also a good Christian. Her religion ever exhibited itself as a steady active holy principle, and not a passionate excitement. To her the presence of the Saviour was so real, that she walked and talked with him daily. She loved the church, was active in all its services, and did her part faithfully and well in advancing the cause of her Lord and Master.

Her departure was what would be expected to follow so pure a life. Watched over and ministered to by husband and daughters, who put aside everything to give her the most loving service, she closed her eyes as if in sleep, which merged itself so quietly into the lasting one, that the twilight of her earthly existence softly blended into the morning of her life in glory.

We do not say she is dead, she has just begun to live, and could she shed one beam of her present glory on the tear dimmed eyes of those who knew and loved her, they would be dimmed no longer, but would be radiant with something of her own brightness.

The funeral services were conducted by the District Superintendent at the parsonage in Bronson, May the 18th, and the remains were taken to Caledonia for burial.

W. P. French.

MRS. R. W. TINDALL.

Mrs. R. W. Tindall, the wife of R. W. Tindall, a retired member of Michigan Conference, residing at Big Rapids, died at the home of her sister in Palmerston, Ontario, February 14, 1918. Drucy M. Pike was born at Whitby, Ontario, September 4, 1858. At the age of sixteen she was converted and joined the Methodist Church. In 1885, she was united in marriage with Rev. R. W. Tindall, and shared the joys and sorrows incident to itinerant life for twenty years. She was a loving self-sacrificing mother, a faithful wife and an earnest Christian. She leaves to mourn her loss, a sorrowing husband, and two sons, Arthur and William, the latter of whom was in the country's service at Camp Custer at the time of her death.
