The Michigan Annual Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church convened for its eighty-third annual session in the First Methodist Episcopal Church, Jackson, Bishop Joseph F. Berry, D. D., LL. D., of Philadelphia, presiding.


Opening Service. The Bishop called the Conference to order at 9:00 a. m., announcing hymn No. 355, "Love Divine," the Conference male quartet leading in song. The Bishop, assisted by the District Superintendents, administered the sacrament of the Lord's Supper. During the reading of the ritual, the Bishop invited the retired ministers to gather at the altar. Hymn 419, "One More Year's Work for Jesus," was sung.

G. B. Fleming declined re-election as Treasurer and nominated as his successor C. S. Risley. He was elected and named as his assistants: H. E. Walker, D. A. Rood, P. A. Cross, M. A. Oldt, G. C. Sheneman, W. S. Philips, F. S. Cramer.


Conference Bar. The bar of the Conference was fixed at the front of the second window from the rear of the auditorium.


Other Secretaries. O. F. Bulman was elected Biographical Secretary, D. C. Riehl Assistant Secretary for Conference Claimants, R. C. Lord Secretary of Transportation.


Sergeant-at-Arms. Floyd R. Maynard was elected Sergeant-at-Arms. Time of Adjournment. On motion of W. I. Cogshall, Rule 2 was so amended as to fix the time of adjournment at 12 o'clock.


Standing Committees. The nominations for the Standing Committees were called for amendments and announcements. Various changes were made and the committees elected.


Changes on Board of Stewards. D. C. Riehl nominated F. G. Dunbar to the vacancy on the Board of Stewards caused by the retirement of C. L. Beebe, and W. M. P. Jerrett to that made by the removal of G. F. Francombe, and they were elected.


Resolutions Touching Registration Day. J. C. Willitts read the fol- lowing resolutions and on his motion they were adopted:


Whereas, The President of the United States has designated Thursday, September 12, as Registration Day; and

Whereas, Thousands of registrants will come from the altars of our church; and


Whereas, The Methodist Episcopal Church has always been loyally devoted to patriotism and Americanism; therefore be it


Resolved, That the Michigan Conference designate the hour from 9-10 o'clock a. m., on Thursday, September 12, for a Conference Patriotic service. And furthermore, that we ask Bishop Berry to deliver an address at said hour and service, and that the citizens of Jackson be invited to unite with us in said patriotic service, and that the pastor of this church together with the Secretary of the Conference be authorized as a committee to carry out these instructions.

Rule 23. On motion of W. F. Kendrick Rule 23 was suspended and the hour for the Memorial Service fixed for Sunday afternoon at three o'clock, with the ordination service following.

Into the Conference, O. R. Grattan from Missouri Conference; Walter R. Smith from Detroit Conference; H. E. Goodenow from Detroit Confer- ence; W. J. C. Belch, a Probationer in the First Year, from Detroit Con- ference; Fred L. Farley from North West Kansas Conference; W. A. Bur- nett, Probationer in First Year, from Holston Conference.


Out of the Conference, Fred L. Farley to the North West Kansas Con- ference; Burley F. Lamb, Probationer in the First Year, to Ohio Conference; Wentworth F. Stewart to Detroit Conference; George F. Francombe to Northern Minnesota Conference.


Introductions: O. R. Grattan. Bert Hollidge, W. A. Burnett and O. J. Blackford, transfers into the Conference, were presented to the Conference. Dr. George Elliott, of Detroit Conference, who is to lecture during the week, was presented, as was Dr. Samuel J. Greenfield, representing the Board of Conference Claimants.


Editor of Michigan Christian Advocate: F. F. Fitchett, Editor of the Michigan Christian Advocate, was presented and spoke in the interest of that paper. He asked for the appointment of a committee of one from each district, with W. H. Phelps as chairman, who should canvas the situa- tion and consider ways for promoting the interests of the Advocate. His request was granted and the committee named as follows: W. H. Phelps, A. R. Johns, S. W. Large, C. E. Hoag, Quinton Walker, J. B. Peatling, A. F. Nagler.


Methodist Review. J. G. Biery was appointed to solicit subscriptions for the Methodist Review.


Committee on Nominations. On motion of W. F. Kendrick, a Commit- tee on Nominations was constituted, consisting of one from each district, as follows: H. R. E. Quant, W. M. Puffer, W. H. Irwin, W. F. Kendrick, W. E. Doty, C. J. Kruse, J. W. Sheehan.

District Superintendents Reports. W. P. French, W. H. Phelps and Hugh Kennedy were called, their characters passed and they reported the work of their districts. (See Reports.)


Prayer for the Nation. In the midst of the reading of one report the city bells sounded the daily call to prayer. The Conference paused in its session for a time in silent prayer, after which the Bishop offered prayer for the armed forces of the nation, its rulers and people, and the cause to which they have committed themselves.


Message to Dr. Dickie. Hugh Kennedy moved that the Secretary be instructed to send a message of greeting to President Dickie, assuring him of our sympathies and our prayers for his recovery from his recent accident. It was so ordered.


J. C. Willits. At his request, John C. Willits was excused from attend- ance upon Conference Thursday, because of duties in connection with the work of the Registration Board of his home town.


R. W. Merrill. R. W. Merrill. who, with his wife, had been injured in an automobile accident, asked to be excused, and his request was granted.


J. H. Potts. J. H. Potts was presented and spoke in feeling apprecia- tion of the gold watch sent to him by the last Conference.


Relinquished Claims. D. C. Riehl presented the following resolution, and it was adopted:


Whereas, A few of our Conference Claimants have relinquished their claim; therefore


Resolved, That the Chairman of the Board of Stewards write a per- sonal letter to each one, voicing the appreciation of the Conference, and thanking them for their generosity.


Episcopal Fund. C. S. Wheeler moved the reference of the apportion- ment of the sum of $5,722 to this Conference for the Episcopal Fund to the Chairman of the Board of Stewards and the Secretary of the Cabinet for distribution to the charges.


Referred to Committee on Conference Relations. On motion of C. S. Wheeler the following were referred to the Committee on Conference Relations for changes in relation as indicated: F. S. Tincher, withdrawal, Irving Eagle to be made effective; L. B. Kenyon and D. C. Riehl to be retired; Theron Jenne, supernumerary; Wm. Gumser, withdrawal; G. W. Hawley, supernumerary; G. K. Fairbanks, retired; R. A. Baker to be made effective; W. E. Goltz, withdrawal; G. B. Millar, retired; W. A. Robinson, supernumerary; A. W. Simmons, to be made effective; C. L. Beebe, super- numerary; P. D. Huff, retired; Wm. Jones, supernumerary; W. W. Gray, retired; D. E. Birtch, supernumerary; F. W. Nickel, supernumerary.


Field Agent. M. M. Callen moved that the Conference request the appointment of Louis DeLamarter as Field Agent for The Endowment Fund, and it was done.


Board of Conference Claimants. Dr. Samuel J. Greenfield, of the Board of Conference Claimants, spoke briefly in the interest of that board and presented its draft for $200, which was accepted and ordered paid to the order of the Conference Treasurer.

SECOND DAY. Thursday, September 12. Morning Session.


The Conference was called to order in devotional session at 8:30 by the Bishop, who announced hymn No. 330, "On Christ The Solid Rock." Prayer was offered by Isaiah Wilson and others. The hymn, "Forever Here My Rest Shall Be," was sung.


Journal. The Journal of Wednesday's session was read and approved. Announcements. The list of Boards and Committees was called for necessary announcement.


Roll. J. W. Buell, E. Mayhew, R. S. McGregor, J. P. Durham, not present at the first roll call, registered themselves as present.


Auditing Plan. On motion of G. B. Fleming the auditing plan proposed . by the Commission on Finance was referred to a committee of three to be appointed by the Bishop, for consideration and report.


Expenses of Publishing Minutes. Secretary G. A. Brown filed a state- ment of the expenses in connection with the publication of the minutes of the last session for reference to the Auditing Committee.


Patriotic Service. According to the Order of the Day the Conference resolved itself into a patriotic session. America was sung. Dr. George Elliott offered prayer. The Conference male quartet sang to the great pleasure of the Conference, "We'll Never Let the Old Flag Fall." Bishop Berry then gave a stirring patriotic address voicing the faith and purpose and program of the nation in this time of war.


Centenary Program. The hour for the Centenary program having ar- rived, the Bishop announced the hymn, "The Kingdom is Coming." D. D. Forsyth, D. D., of the Board of Home Missions gave an address on the "Timeliness and Urgency of the Centenary as a War Measure." B. M. Tipple, D. D., of the Italian mission field, gave an address on the "Claims of the Foreign Field."


Time to Which to Adjourn and Extension of Time. On motion the time was extended and the Conference voted that when it adjourn it be to meet at two o'clock for a business session.


Bishop Anderson. Bishop Anderson was introduced and gave the con- cluding address of the Centenary program, on "The Claims of the Cen- tenary as Emphasized and Illustrated By His Personal Experiences Among the Soldiers of Europe."


Introductions. Dr. J. R. Henry, of the Church of All Nations, New York City, and Dr. Rockwell Clancy, of India, who were to speak at the Centenary program in the evening, were introduced.

Afternoon Session.


The Bishop called the Conference to order at 2:30, and called upon W. I. Cogshall to offer prayer.


Wesley Hospital. M. W. Satterfield, of Wesley Hospital, Chicago, was presented and represented the work of that institution.


Committee on Auditing Plan. The Bishop named W. F. Kendrick, G. K. Fairbanks and G. B. Fleming as the committee to whom the proposed plan of auditing should be referred.


New Jersey Conference Communication. Secretary G. A. Brown pre- sented a communication from the New Jersey Conference concerning the Commission on Conference Course of Study, and it was referred to a com- mittee of three to be appointed by the Bishop. He named W. I. Cogshall, L. H. Manning and M. D. Carrel.


Student Training Corp at Albion. Prof. C. W. Greene, of Albion Col- lege, was introduced, and spoke on the work to be done at Albion the coming year in the Students' Army Training Corps.


Place of Holding Next Conference. Question 36 was asked and M. L. Fox asked that the privilege of the floor be granted to W. H. French, a layman of Central Church, Lansing. It was granted and Mr. French extended a cordial invitation from Central Church, Lansing, to hold its next session in that church. The invitation was unanimously accepted by rising vote.
