DIRECTIONS AND INSTRUCTIONS FOR TELEGRAPHING FIRE ALARMS.

Keys are left with the occupants of building in the vicinity of each fire alarm box and members of the police force carry keys.

The following should be observed when a fire is discovered : I. Go to the box, open the door and pull the hook down as far as it will go firmly and without jerking and let it slide back. II. If the alarm is not immmediately heard upon the small bell within, or at one of the engine houses, go to the next nearest box to the fire and repeat the operation.

III. If on going to the box to give an alarm the bell inside is heard ringing, which is an indication that an alarm is being sent in, do not open the box until it is done.

In all such cases count the signal which is being sounded, and be certain it is not for the same fire.

Keyholders are cautioned ---

1. To not open the box except in case of fire.

2. To not given an alarm until certain of fire.

3. To not give an alarm for a fire seen at a distance.

4. To pull down the hook but once in giving an alarm.

5. To be sure, after giving an alarm, that the door is securely closed before leav- ing the box.

6. To not let the key go out of their possession except when demanded by prop- er authority.

7. Keyholders, if removing their places of business or residence, are requested to return the key to the fire department head- quarters.

8. Wait at the box and direct the fire- men to the fire.
