INTRODUCTION AND GENERAL INDEX
HILL DIRECTORY CO., Inc., publishers of Southeastern Directories, present to subscribers and the general public, this, the 1959 edition of the Chapel Hill City Directory which also includes Carrboro.
Confidence in the growth of Chapel Hill's industry, popu- lation and wealth, and in the advancement of its civic and social activities, will be maintained as sections of this Directory are consulted, for the Directory is a mirror truly reflecting Chapel Hill to the world.
The enviable position occupied by HILL'S Directories in the estimation of the public, has been established by render- ing the best in Directory service. With an unrivaled organiza- tion, and having had the courteous and hearty cooperation of the business and professional men and residents, the publish- ers feel that the result of their labors will meet with the approval of every user, and that the Chapel Hill Directory will fulfill its mission as a source of authentic information pertain- ing to the community.
Four Major Departments
The four major departments are arranged in the follow- ing order :-
I. THE YELLOW PAGES constitute the first major de- partment of the Directory. This embraces a complete list of the names and addresses of the business and professional concerns of the city and vicinity, arranged in alphabetical order under appropriate headings-a catalog of all the activi- ties of the city and vicinity. Preceding this catalog, likewise grouped under appropriate headings, are the advertisements and business cards of firms and individuals desiring to present a more complete list of their products or services than is pos- sible in the catalog itself. The Yellow Pages represent refer- ence advertising at its best, and merit the attention of all buy- ers and sellers seeking sources of supply or markets for goods, In progressive community like Chapel Hill, the necessity of having this kind of information up-to-date and always immed- iately available, is obvious. The Directory is the common intermediary between buyer and seller, and plays an impor- tant role in the daily activities of the commercial, industrial and professional world.
792200
II. THE ALPHABETICAL LIST OF NAMES of residents and business and professional concerns is the second major department, printed on white paper. This is the only record in existence that aims to show the name, marital status, occu- pation and address of each adult resident of Chapel Hill and Carrboro, and the name, official personnel, nature and ad- dress of each firm and corporation.

INTRODUCTION AND GENERAL INDEX
III. THE DIRECTORY OF HOUSEHOLDERS, INCLUD- ING STREET AND AVENUE GUIDE, is the third major de- partment, printed on green paper. In this section the named streets are arranged in alphabetical order; the numbers of the residences and business concerns are arranged in numerical order under the name of each street, and the names of the householders and concerns are placed opposite the numbers. The names of the intersecting streets appear at their respec- tive crossing points on each street. Special features of this sec- tiin are the designation of tenant-owned homes and the listing of telephone numbers.
IV. THE NUMERICAL TELEPHONE DIRECTORY, on blue paper is the fourth major department.
Community Publicity
The Directory reflects the achievements and ambitions of the city, depicting in unbiased terms what it has to offer as a place of residence, as a business location, as a manufacturing site and as an educational center. To broadcast this informa- tion, the publishers have placed copies of this issue of the Di- rectory in Directory Libraries, where they are readily avail- able for free public reference, and serve as perpetual and re- liable advertisements of Chapel Hill and vicinity.
The Chapel Hill Out-Of-Town City Directory Library
Through the courtesy of the publishers of the Chapel Hill City Directory, a Directory Library is maintained in the offices of the Chapel Hill-Carrboro Merchants Assn, Credit Bureau and Chamber of Commerce Inc, for free reference by the general public. This is one of more than 700 Directory Libraries installed in the chief cities of the U.S. and Canada by members of the Association of North American Directory Publishers.
The publishers appreciatively acknowledge the recogni- tion by those progressive business and professional men who have demonstrated their confidence in the City Directory as an advertising medium, with assurance that it will bring a commensurate return.

4. To increase public knowledge of what Directories contain; to study public needs and make Direc- tories to supply them, to revise and standardize methods and classifica- tions, so that what is wanted may be most easily found, and the Direc- tory be made to serve its fullest use

INTRODUCTION
UNIVERSITY OF NORTH CAROLINA
The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is in a very real sense the mother of hundreds of state colleges and universities. These institutions had their humble beginning in the dark days of the American Revolution when the University at Chapel Hill was provided for in the State Constitution at Halifax in 1776
Chartered in 1789, six years later it became the first state university in America to open its door to students. At that time, its physical plant consisted of a single building, Old East Dormitory, which is still in use today and is the oldest struc- ture on any state university campus in the country.
From its beginning the University enjoyed a steady, healthy growth. In 1860, it stood at the forefront of American universities and had the second largest student body in Ameri- ca. In 1931, the State Legislature directed that the State Col- lege at Raleigh, the Woman's College at Greensboro, and the University at Chapel Hill be consolidated, and under unifica- tion, all three institutions have continued to make steady prog- ress. While combined enrollment is now approximately 13,000, enrollment at the University at Chapel Hill is now approximate- ly 5,500, and the faculty numbers more than 500. In addi- tion to students in residence, the University has approximately

INTRODUCTION
1,300 students enrolled in correspondence courses, and hun- dreds in off-campus extension classes and college centers.
The University at Chapel Hill comprises 14 schools and colleges - the General College, the College of Arts and Sciences, the Schools of Education, Business Administration, Law, Medicine, Pharmacy, Dentistry, Public Health, Library Science, Nursing, Journalism, Social Work, and Graduate School. The Division of Health Affairs was established in 1949. Its physical plant embraces almost 1,700 acres and 77 permanent buildings, valued at approximately $42,000,000. It is the oldest state university in the nation, founded in 1793 near the geographical center of the state. With pride in cultivating the natural beauty of the region, the campus is among the most attractive in the world.
Several years ago the American Council on Education sponsored a survey of departments qualified to give Doctor of Philosophy degrees. It found more such departments at the University than any other south of Baltimore and east of the Mississippi. In two surveys made by the United States Navy incident to the location of one of its Pre-Flight training schools, the University was adjudged the most desirable in the south and east.
Standards
The University is a member of the Association of Ameri- can Universities, and several of the colleges, schools and de- partments have attained national distinction in their special academic spheres.
The General College
Most freshmen and sophomores in the University enroll in the General College. For two years they follow the basic and liberal subjects constituting the foundations of that general

A feature of the General College is the extent of guidance and personal counseling available to students. Each student is the special charge of a faculty adviser.
