Law

The School of Law is one of the approved law schools of the American Bar Association and is a member of the Association of American Law Schools. It is housed in Manning Hall, near the center of the campus.

Undergraduates who have completed at least three years of acceptable work toward a baccalaureate degree at an ap- proved college or university are eligible to enter the School of Law.

Health Complex

A six-in-one Division of Health Affairs is sometimes called a health university within a university. The six-fold health complex includes School of Medicine, School of Pharm- acy, School of Public Health, School of Dentistry, School of Nursing and a teaching hospital, the North Carolina Memorial Hospital.

The Division serves as a teaching-research-therapy center for training of professional men and women on the student level, as interns and residents and as experienced professional

specialists concerned with further post-graduate develop- ment.

Medicine

The School of Medicine was established in 1879 and be- came a four-year school with a teaching hospital attached in 1952.

The School has the approval of the Association of Ameri- can Medical Colleges, of the Council on Medical Education and Hospitals of the American Medical Association.

Departments in the School of Medicine are divided into the following parts: medicine, pathology, preventive medicine, anatomy, biochemistry, psychiatry, physiology, obstetrics and gynecology, radiology and pediatrics.

Public Health

The School of Public Health trains students and performs activities for the "body politic" that the School of Medicine does for the individual.

It is one of the new public schools in the nation and has both a national and international reputation for teaching and for research. It trains doctors, nurses, sanitarians, and other technicians and special health educators. There is depart- mental instruction in biostatistics, epidemiology, experiment- al medicine, public health administration and education, ma- ternal and child health, mental health, public health nursing, nutrition, parasitology, and sanitary engineering.

Pharmacy

The Pharmacy School was established late in the 19th Cen- tury because of the urgent demand of pharmacists in the state, and the demands for more and more pharmacists con- tinues past the mid-twentieth century. The American Council on Pharmaceutical Education accredits the school Class A.

Dentistry

The School of Dentistry operates a superior program of training for dentists, dental technicians, and dental hygien- ists. Besides producing students, the school conducts post- graduate courses for dentists throughout North Carolina. It is a Class A School, so accredited by the American Dental Associ- ation.

Nursing

The School of Nursing offers a four-year curriculum lead- ing to a bachelor of science degree in nursing. The students of nursing take a full part in campus academic, political and so- cial affairs. The School of Nursing is accredited by the Nation- al League for Nursing.

Education

Closely connected with the public school system of the state is the School of Education which trains those men and women who wish to follow elementary and high school teach- ing as a career.

The school is recognized for the high quality of its work in preparing teachers for jobs and for its success in placing students in higher positions in the schools and for special courses, in the summer and in regular semesters, which benefit teachers working for higher degrees and certificate credits.

Communications

A prominent new feature of higher education is the use of television, together with radio and motion pictures, all three utilized with conjoined efficiency in the Department of Radio, Television, and Motion Pictures, a part of the UNC Communi- cations Center.

All aspects of broadcasting and film production are taught -including announcing, acting, script writing, visual aids, production, commercial phases of the communications and operation of equipment.

Allied with the department is WUNC-TV, an educational television station broadcasting on Channel 4, and a frequency modulation radio station, WUNC.

Journalism

The School of Journalism seeks to give more than practi- cal training to those wanting to become newspapermen. The school also has high standards and insists upon thorough arts and sciences training as a preliminary to training in journal- ism. The school trains both graduates and undergraduates, and many newspapermen of national standing are among the alumni of UNC's School of Journalism.

Graduate School

Granting that much of the rank of a university rests upon the quality of its teaching on the graduate level as well as for undergraduates and also assuming that respect for an achieve- ment of basic and applied research is one of the hallmarks of a distinction of a university, the University of North Carolina has offered advanced courses beyond the undergraduate level. Degrees under the supervision of the graduate faculty are the Mastr of Arts (A.M.), Master of Science (S.M.) and Doctor of Philosophy.

xxi

INTRODUCTION

Masters degrees are offered in 42 fields. The Ph.D. de- gree is offered in 27 fields.

Secial Work

The School of Social Work has developed from an earlier School of Public Welfare in accordance with a University policy of meeting the varying needs of the state and Southern region. It is accredited by the Council on Social Work Educa- tion, and its program for the training of Psychiatric Social Workers is approved by the American Association of Psychi- atric Social Workers.

Institute of Government

The Institute of Government is a unique grassroots pro- gram of instruction and guidance for officials in North Caro- lina charged with responsibility for county, city and state gov- ernment.

Officials of county court houses, city halls, the state capi- tol and other centers of government come to Chapel Hill for special conferences and clinics taught by trained instructors.

Besides bringing court judges, tax collectors, registers of deeds, jailers, sheriffs and the like to Chapel Hill for special- ized instruction, the Institute of Government also conducts special surveys in all parts of the state for localgovernmental improvement. The Institute bridges the gap between the way law is taught in the classroom and the way it is practiced in the court houses, combining theory with practicality with a har- monious design.

Institute for Research in Social Science

The Institute for Research in Social Science performs a vital service for state and nation in finding facts that are use- ful for society. This is performed by channeling the tremend-

Extension

Besides instruction of students enrolled in the University there are thousands of other students who take correspondence courses or enroll in special short courses, clinics and insti- tutes. The advantages of the University in teaching and in other ways are made available to the people of the state and region by the University Extension Division.

These services utilize educational television and radio, classes in various parts of the state, lectures, library service, adult education programs, audio-visual education, high school interscholastic activities, the fine arts and publications.

Library Science

The School of Library Science trains graduate students in the profession of librarian. The school has high standards and is a reservoir of talent for libraries in public libraries of the state, in public schools and in college and university libraries over the country.

The School is accredited by the American Library Associ- ation.

Playmakers

The Carolina Playmakers are distinguished for their de- velopment of folk drama, training both playwrights and actors and fostering the growth of outdoor dramas which has gained

international recognition in the world of dramatics. What the little theatre is to a community, the Carolina Playmakers have become in North Carolina and the region. The national attain- ment of some of its alumni testify to the worth and ferment of the Playmakers who are so integrally a part of the Depart- ment of Dramatic Arts.

Library

The University Library is unquestionably the heart of the University's life. It is truly one of the distinguished libraries of the region and contains many fine collections, majoring in the Southern Historical Collection and a collection of North Carolina historical and other volumes. The main library collec- tions are housed in the Louis Round Wilson Library building, a magnificent structure which is a center of campus activity for both students and faculty.

UNC Press

The University of North Carolina Press has published books and periodicals of interest since 1922. The Press issues a large number of volumes annually. It is a member of the American Association of University Presses.

It is one of only seven in the United States and the only one in the world that is located on a university or college campus. Out Of Sight! Out Of Mind! Out of Business

The importance of keeping firm and product names in the public eye is recognized by all business men. It is astonishing to see how a firm or product, how- ever meritorious, will slip into the limbo of the for- gotten if not persistently advertised.

The City Directory is the natural medium for keeping a business or product name in the spotlight. Insist on being well repre- sented in its pages.

Please! Do Not Lend Your CITY DIRECTORY

IT COSTS YOU MONEY-Every Time it Is Loaned

The practice of lending your City Directory, in a great measure, is responsible for the increasing cost of Directory Service.

The reason is :-

There is a definite cost involved in the making of the DIRECTORY of Your City. THIS COST MUST BE ABSORBED BY THE SUBSCRIBERS-BE THEY ONE-OR BE THEY 1000.

If there were but ONE SUBSCRIBER to the CITY DIRECTORY-THE ONE SUBSCRIBER would of necessity have to absorb THE WHOLE COST.

If there were 100 SUBSCRIBERS-each one would have to absorb I/100th PART OF THE WHOLE COST.

If there were 1000 SUBSCRIBERS-each one would have to absorb 1/1000th PART OF THE WHOLE COST.

From which it is obvious that the GREATER the number of subscribers -the LESSER the cost to each.

And

It is also obvious that the LESSER the number of subscribers the GREATER the cost to each.

Every time you loan your City Directory the LESS NECESSITY THERE IS FOR THE BORROWER TO SUBSCRIBE FOR THE SERVICE.

MORE BORROWERS result in FEWER SUBSCRIBERS which means IN- CREASED COST.
