TRANSMITTING MESSAGES . .. Employees of the Telephone Company are forbidden to accept oral or written messages to be transmitted over the lines of the Telephone Company.

RELINQUISHING TELEPHONES FOR EMERGENCY CALLS . . . The law of North Carolina provides that any person who fails to relinquish a telephone party line or a public-pay telephone when informed that such a line is needed for an emergency call to a fire department or police department, or for medical aid or ambulance service shall be guilty of a misde- meanor. Such law also provides that any person who shall secure a telephone party line or a public-pay telephone by falsely stating that such line is needed for an emergency call, is guilty of a misdemeanor.

ADVERTISING TELEPHONE NUMBERS .. . There are recognized advantages of showing telephone num- bers on stationery, signs, cards, etc. Growth and changes în telephone facilities may require the changing of telephone numbers, therefore, any of these showing telephone numbers should not be printed in large quantities.

TELEGRAMS BY TELEPHONE ... You may telephone telegrams, cablegrams or radiograms to the Western Union Telegraph Co., and have the charges appear on your telephone bill. You may also telephone your messages from coin telephones, paying as you would for a telephone call.

RECORDING OF TELEPHONE CONVERSATIONS .. Many businesses have automatic answering and re- cording telephone sets to take your calls and record any messages. A "beep" tone is the signal that the device is starting to record. When you hear the "beep", speak your message into the telephone clearly; you will have about 30 seconds.

For Your Protection . . . the "beep" signal, produced automatically by the device used to connect record- ing equipment to telephone lines and heard about every 15 seconds on any telephone call, indicates that your conversation is being recorded. If you don't want a record made, tell the party to disconnect his recorder. You will know he has complied if the "beep" stops. Use of a recorder without this signal is unlawful.

YOUR 'PHONE AWAY FROM HOME . . . More and more outdoor telephone booths are being placed at convenient locations everywhere; ready for use 24 hours a day, every day in the year. There are hun- dreds of other telephone booths in buildings, stores, hotels, gas stations, airports, railroad and bus sta- tions, etc. You are always near a public telephone. Instructions as to how to use ît are displayed on or near each 'phone.

PARTY LINE COURTESY . . . When several persons share the use of a telephone line, consideration and courtesy are important to all. Everyone will enjoy better service if each one will be reasonably brief . . . space calls so the other party can place his calls .. . and give up the line for emergency use.

2. LISTEN FOR THE DIAL TONE. Then dial the number promptly and accurately. If you do not hear the dial tone, hang up for a few seconds. and try again.

3. TO DIAL A NUMBER-Turn the dial until your finger touches the finger stop and allow it to return to its normal position for each letter and figure of the number.

4. IF YOU MAKE A MISTAKE WHILE DIALING Hang up for a few seconds and after lis- tening for the dial tone, dial the number again.

SIGNALS

If you do not hear the ringing or busy signal after dialing, hang up for a few seconds and dial the number again. If you hear a rising and falling tone, you have dialed a non-ex- istent number. Verify the number and dial again.

ASSISTANCE

If you wish any assistance in completing a call, dial "Operator."

HELPFUL SUGGESTIONS
