"FROM THE DESK OF THE PASTOR"

To the Founders and Pioneers, who with grit, sweat, and vision transformed what is known now as Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church -- from the dark days of slavery, the depts of despair and darkness, to the splendor of hope and light, and who served as our reminder of the dead, buried and resurrected Saviour .

GREETINGS!

Whereas death hath removed from the walks of life our Fathers, Mothers, Sisters, and Brothers in Christ, and as we their children reflect upon the past .

-- Be it resolved that we as their children do appreciate what they have done, having pioneered the trail which we have followed these many years -- the rituals, by-laws, order of service and hymns of the "days past and gone."

-- Be it further resolved that we shall not forget what they have left: footprints upon the sands of time, the boundary of our religious heritage, the hope for a new and brighter day, and the assurance that after we shall have passed from life unto death, we shall see the Lord Jesus.

We will continue the progress through the next 100 years of "building people for a caring, sharing fellowship" through our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.

Thank you for your help, time, and efforts in making the 22 years that I have served you as your pastor possible. Your continued prayers are re- quested.

Yours in Christ,

Moses C. Herring, Minister

C. Harry Orie Gore graduated in 1941 from Brunswick County Training School, and furthered his education at A. & T. State University in Greensboro, N.C., where he received a Bachelor's Degree. Another one of the sons of Mt. Zion is Joseph Willis Butler, son of Deacon & Mrs. Joseph Roscoe Butler and grandson of the late Sam Butler, who became the first principal in the Brunswick County System from our church. He is a graduate of Fayetteville State University, A. & T. State University, and the University of N. C. at Greensboro, and is presently principal of Lincoln Primary School, Leland, N. C.

Covia Levance Stanley, M.D., P.A., was the first from our church to further his education in the medical field, and is currently practicing medicine in Whiteville, N. C. He graduated from N. C. Central University and the Buffalo School of Medicine, Buffalo, N. Y. on May 7, 1978. He is the son of Mr. & Mrs. Covia Stanley and the great-great grandson of Rev. W. J. Stevenson.

We are very proud of Mrs. Zelphia Gore Grissett, who in 1986 became the first female assistant principal from Mt. Zion membership. She received her Bachelor's degree from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and Master's degree from the University of South Carolina. She is presently employed at Shallotte Middle School in the Brunswick County School System. She is the daughter of Mrs. & Mrs., Earlie L. Gore and the great-great granddaughter of Rev. W. J. Stevenson.

1886 - CHURCH HISTORY - 1986

Five scores ago, the founding Fathers organized Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church over Butler's Mill Pond under a big oak tree in the yard of W. J. Stevenson. With fervent prayer, dedicated minds and sound judgment, they moved to a bush shelter and erected a log building south of this present site. This sacred spot of ground was given by the late W. J. Stevenson, father of this Church. Through a spiritual vision, this great father included a burial ground where he now lies at rest. The first per- son to be buried in this cemetery was Mother Mariah Butler, mother-in-law of W. J. Stevenson.

Mary Eva Stevenson Gore, daughter of Rev. W. J. Stevenson, was the midwife for the community for a number of years. She was born about 1892, and her husband was York Gore. During her adult life, she was a nurse and mid wife for everyone in the community.

The founding fathers of the Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church include: the late Rev. Jim Spicer, Caesar Frink, Caesar Stanley, and Sharp Gore.

The first ordained deacon was W. J. Stevenson, whose picture now hangs as a memorial in the Sanctuary.

The first pastor of Mt. Zion was Jackson Eagles.

Other pastors who have held pastorate in this Church are: Leonard Frink, Solomon Eagles, Peter Morgan, Jim Spicer, Charles Gore, Dick Mitze, James Bragdom, J. I. Bennett, Dan Hill, Jim McIntyre, Joe Gore, Samuel Stevenson, W. C. Graham, G. W. Watson, and A. J. Grove.

During the pastorage of Rev. G. W. Watson, he was inspired to provide religious social education. With this concept in mind, Rev. G. W. Watson and Rev. Stackhouse, a friend began the Vacation Bible School at Mt. Zion. With the cooperation of Mrs. Dewey. Robbins and the Southern Baptist Convention, the Vacation Bible School started with two classes, one for the boys and one for the girls.

In the year of our Lord, nineteen hundred twenty-five, the Rev. W. C. Graham was called as pastor and served nine years. It was under his administration that a new building was erected -- and many souls were added to the Church.

In the year of our Lord, nineteen hundred thirty-four, the Rev. G. W. Watson was called as pastor and served for 17 years. Under his administration a new block building was erected where we now worship.

In the year of our Lord, nineteen hundred fifty-one, the Rev. A. J. Grove was called as pastor and served for 13 years. Seeing a great need for Christian education, he erected the present Educational Building, which now serves a multi-purpose.

In the year of our Lord, nineteen hundred sixty-four, the Rev. M. C. Herring was called, the young- est pastor ever in the history of the Mt. Zion Baptist Church. Rev. Herring serves as the present pastor.

As of now, Rev. Herring is succeeding, because he has in his heart love for his tasks and love for his members. He is always prepared mentally, socially, physically, and spiritually. Being a young minister, the younger people have been more at ease and encouraged to take part in the church activities.

The words that fall from his lips upon the waiting hearts of the listening congregation are anointed with divine power and strength. They bring hope, encouragement, and transformation to all who grasp His words as they come from the might soul of the man of God. His soul is so filled with the seeking of souls, and he finds fulfillment in the Lord, who commissioned him to go forth to preach so that the King- dom of God might be advanced and enriched. He is a builder -- he is building a temple for the Son of God; and the temple which he builds will stand throughout all ages, for the puts time, energy, and wisdom into building this temple of immortal souls.

In the year of our Lord, nineteen hundred seventy-three, through the foresight and keen interest of a few members of this Church and our community, we acquired another building known as Longwood Center. This building is adjacent to our church and is used for the Headstart center, community meetings, and many other purposes.

CHURDH HISTORY (Continued)

Mrs. Edith Falconer was the first female college graduate from Mt. Zion. She received her Bachelor's degree from Shaw University. She is the daughter of Mr. & Mrs. William Bellamy and the granddaughter of Rev. W. J. Stevenson.

Luther Winfred Gore is Vice-President and instructor of Black World College of Hair Design, Inc. in Charlotte, N. C. He is the son of Deacon & Mrs. L. W. Gore and the great grandson of Rev. & Mrs. W. J. Stevenson.

Deacon Tim E. Gore is District Deputy of the First Masonic District of North Carolina. He is also owner/technician of the Hair Doctor's Beauty & Barber Salon in Wilmington, North Carolina, and has been a registered barber for more than 30 years. He is the son of Deacon & Mrs. L. W. Gore and the great grandson of Rev. W. J. Stevenson.

There are many more persons who have accomplished greatness who are too numerous and space will not allow us to mention in this publication.

Re : Centennial Celebration - June 15 - 22. 1986 Mr. Joseph W. Butler, Program Chairman

Dear Brethren :

This is to congratulate you upon your 100th Anniversary Celebration. Peace be unto you and Grace from our Lord Jesus Christ.

The land upon which you now worship was once cotton and corn licids and our forefathers were slave laborers in them. Today God has given us peace with the children of former slave owners. Let us thank him for his goodness and pursue peace and goodwill with all men.

May the rich love of Jesus Christ be upon all that you undertake in this historic event. You have my prayers for God's richest benedic- tion to rest upon Mount Zion Church always.

In the Power Love of Jesus.
