GREETINGS FROM THE MISSIONARY DEPARTMENT BY Etherine Deloise Phillips ButIer, President

I wish to greet the Mt. Zion Congregation in the name of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ on our 100TH ANNIVERSARY and celebration. For 100 years we have been striving to bring hope and peace to those persons who seem to accept religious guidance.

As we continue to promote the objectives of our Woman's Home and Foreign Missionary Convention of North Carolina, we include all persons: the youth, the young adults, and the seniors. One can experience growth while becoming a leader through these departments in the church on the local level.

The Missionary Circle at Mt. Zion is fortunate to have participation at the Union, Mass Meeting, Mid- Year Session, and the Workshop in Raleigh, North Carolina. We thank God for allowing us the opportunity to receive three awards in 1986. The Senior Circle received a plaque for attendance at the Mass Meeting in March. Our Young Adult Department received a plaque for attendance at the Union in March. Then our Youth Department received a plaque for attendance at the Union in March also. For all of this we give God the Glory.

As we reflect on our theme "100 Years of Building People for a Caring-Sharing Fellowship," it is with love, peace, and understanding that we focus our attention on the 21ST CENTURY and pave the way for the children, grandchildren, and many others who will benefit from the sacrifices for which we have labored here at Mt. Zion. Many songs have been dedicated to God in the past 100 years. Prayers were prayed that we might one day witness this 100TH ANNIVERSARY.

God gave Mrs. Bertha C. Gore a vision that she would request permission from Rev. W. C. Graham, pastor of Mt. Zion, officers, and members in attendance at a meeting in 1930 that she organize a mission- ary department of the Ocean View Union. Today, we are still supporting and attending this Union by the help of God.

We shall never forget that for 44 years God Almighty allowed Mrs. Mable Flora Stevenson Dewey to serve as Missionary President at Mt. Zion, and the church is only 56 years older than her leadership.

Under the tutelage of the present president, 14 youths attended the J. J. Johnson Camp in Laurel Hill, North Carolina in 1985, and 13 youths will attend camp in June, 1986. Also, our first State officer from the Ocean View Union is a member of Mt. Zion Church. Tania Makeise Butler is 4th Vice-President of the Youth Department of the Woman's Home and Foreign Missionary Convention of North Carolina.

The Missionary Circle at Mt. Zion is most grateful to have a pastor, Rev. M. C. Herring, promote God's program, the objectives of mission, and to guide us in God's Word. We stand ready to accept the challenge of "Building People Through a Caring-Sharing Fellowship" through Rev. Herring's leadership.

Let us help celebrate the CENTENNIAL through our faith in God. "If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed . . . nothing shall be impossible unto you." -- Matthew 17:20

REV. & MRS. BENNIE PRICE STEVENSON

Rev. & Mrs. Bennie Stevenson were born and raised in Brunswick County, North Carolina. Rev. Stevenson was the son of Rev. W. J. and Mrs. Hannah Stevenson. Mrs. Bessie Galloway Stevenson was the daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Andrew J. Galloway. They confessed Christ at an early age and joined Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church.

Rev. Stevenson was church clerk for several years, and in 1915 became an ordained minister. His divine calling and stamina lead him to pastor many churches. Among them were Little Prong, Union Bap- tist, Mt. Rona, Cherry Grove, Pleasant Hill, Cedar Grove (Chadbourn), Cedar Grove (Supply), Fairmont, St. John, Friendship, Mitchell Sea, and Pleasant Grove. He was moderator of the Ocean View Union, and member of the Executive and Banking Committee of the Burial Society for several years. Mrs. Stevenson was a Sunday School teacher and president of the Mission Circle for several years.

On March 9, 1907, they were united in Holy matrimony. To this Union were born eight children: Flora Mable, Bertha, Lawrence, Andrew J., Edward Percy, Hannah Estelle, Margie Oleter, and Gracie; two adopted children: Pencie Mitchell, and Nathan Stevenson.

One hundred years of religious training and Christian education that the pastors, deacons, and members of Mt. Zion have given to the community is a tremendous milestone.

The church has stood for important basic and progressive ideas throughout its history. Our family is grateful for the love and devotion which have been contributed in making Mt. Zion a vital and meaningful institution in Brunswick County.

We also appreciate the civic contributions which the membership has made toward improving the quality of life, both spiritual and physical.

Deacon Stanley passed away on September 11, 1986. His presence, his leadership, and guidance will be greatly missed among the church con- gregation, his family, and friends.

Greetings to the Pastor and Members of the Mt. Zion Church on your 100th Anniversary. Remembering our fore- fathers who labored so hard for a better day and a better place to worship as they sang:

I love Thy church O God, Her walls before Thee stand, Dear as the apple of Thine eye And graven on Thy hand.

For her my tears shall fall, For her my prayers ascend; To her my prayers and toils be given Till Cares and Toils shall end.

May the Church continue to stand out as a great beacon light pointing souls to Christ our Saviour.

We worship here, too.

The strength of a com- munity can be recog- nized by the commit- ment of its families to gather together for a time of worship.

The Faith of Our Fathers is more than a song. It promotes a unified foundation that entire populations can grow upon and cross denominational lines for fellowship.

Except in rare emergencies, we don't want our employees to ever work on that special day of the week. It's a time for families. It's a time for renewing beliefs It's a time for strengthening.

That's one nice fact about being a local Independent Telephone Company ... we can work together during the week and worship together on weekends. We like that.
