MOTTO-"The Union of All for the Good of All" "Through this publication let us get better acquainted. Most of life's troub- les come from misunderstandings. If we know each other we shall understand each other; if we understand each other, we shall trust each other; if we trust each other we shall work together in unity of purpose; if we work together in unity of purpose there is nothing worth while which we cannot accomplish."-Hon. David Blair, former Commissioner of Internal Revenue of U. S. A.
Collect of Women of America
Keep us, O God, from pettiness ; let us be large in thought, in word, in deed. Let us take time for all things; make us grow calm, serene.
May we put away all pretense' and meet each other face to face without self-pity and without prejudice.
May we never be hasty in judgement and always generous.
Teach us to put unto action our better impulses, straightforwardness and unafraid. Let us take time for all things; make us grow calm, serene and gentle.
Grant that we may realize it is the little things that create differences; that in the big things of life we are as one.
And may we strive to touch and to know the great common woman's heart of us all; and O Lord God, let us not forget to be kind.
-Miss Mary Stewart, Colorado
The Club Woman's Hymn
With joy we meet, each friend to greet, From Mountain and from Sea; Hand clasped in hand, as one we stand In faith and loyalty. We love our work, no task we shirk, We serve where needs are found; A good deed done, is for each one, To make more joy abound.
Afire with zeal, we seek the weel, Of nation, State, and Home; That all may share, in our welfare And none be forced to roam. Always we seek, to lift the weak; To help the strong grow wise; To fill our hearts with love and peace That we, with them, may rise.
Let Carolina womanhood Arise in all its might; With purpose strong, to right the wrong, And make earth's pathways bright. God guide us in our work and play, God keep us brave and true; Our efforts bless, and bring success, To all we strive to do. -Sallie Southall Cotton

The Art and Literature department offers an un- usually entertaining and unique program for the year. The Book Clubs of Winston-Salem, as associate host- ess, will each hold one of their best meetings of the year, with the Art and Literature department, at the club house, presenting the program for the day from their own club.

WIVES AND MOTHERS SEE TO IT NOW
The welfare of the Wife and Children is one of the most important problems in this life. See that your Husband makes it certain that you and your Children will never be in want by investing for you NOW a part of what he intends leaving you at his death.
INCOME FOR LIFE
A monthly Income Policy in the SECURITY LIFE TRUST COMPANY will provide a monthly in- come for life for the Widow and Orphans, beginning at the death of the Insured. There is no cost for administration or tax on same. The Company hand- les it without charge. The check goes promptly every month. Many widows who are left an abun- dance of property or a lump sum of life insurance soon lose it and spend the balance of their days in want. Many daughters have their inheritance soon dissipated by an incapable spendthrift husband.

THE PRESIDENT'S ANNUAL REPORT, 1929-30
I have often wondered how a novelist feels when inspired to write a great novel. It certainly must be en- tirely different to that of a President trying to write her first report.
On Wednesday, Oct. 23rd, 1929, the initial meeting of the Woman's Club was held at the Robert E. Lee Hotel, their annual "get-together luncheon," with Mrs. E. M. Land, President of North Carolina State Federa- tion of Women's Clubs as our speaker and honor guest. Mrs. Land is a delightful speaker, possessing a person- ality of rare charm and magnetism, and her address on this occasion was a masterpiece.
Our activities during the past year have been many and varied. Through the courtesy of the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company, a sixteen page booklet has been published-"A Review of Health Conditions and Needs in Forsyth County." This publication has been revised by the Civic and Social Service department, be- ing made possible by the co-operation of Dr. J. Roy Hege, Forsyth County health officer, and the personnel of the County Health department.
A similar booklet was published of the City of Winston-Salem, with the co-operation of Dr. R. L. Carl- ton, the City health officer and his department. Es- pecial study of students was made, and the parents who do not already know what health service is available for children of both the pre-school and school age, will be interested to learn how thoroughly such work is car- ried on, in both county and city.
Many bright and cheerful Christmas stockings filled with articles that were useful for every day use, were sent to the boys at Oteen, and a message from Miss Taylor, director of Red Cross service at Oteen, writes us the boys in the Hospital said the stockings were the very nicest they had ever received (and they were most attractive, the members seemed to vie with each other to make the most attractive stocking.)
Many needy families were made happy at Christ- mas time by well filled baskets, furnished by several interested members of the club. In co-operation with this basket idea for worthy families we owe many thanks to Mr. Van Dyke of the Van Dyke department store, as he gave us a most generous personal check. All pur- «hases were made at actual cost, and many articles of clothing and toys were given with the baskets.
A generous program of semi-classical songs and negro spirituals was well rendered at the Carolina The- atre by the Kimberly Park Glee Club, sponsored by the Woman's Club and the Civitans. A silver offering was taken and the proceeds used to buy books for the Kim- berly Park School Library.
Our club women aided in making the drive for the Community Chest a success.'
We have co-operated with the State and General Federation 100 per cent. We contributed fifty cents per capita for the General Federation Fund of two million dollars, for carrying on the work of the General Federa- tion, seventeen thousand, five hundred dollars being the quota for North Carolina. I wish to state here that North Carolina was the first State in the General Federation to send in the first thousand dollars.
We contributed to the Sally Southall Cotton Loan Fund, of the State Federation. It would do your heart
good to hear the wonderful report given at Pinehurst, on how many girls had been aided in getting an educa- tion through this Loan Fund. Many appeals were made in vain for lack of funds.
Our State Federation, as many of you know, was asked to make the Home Survey of accidents, "because of the efficient way in which you undertake tasks en- trusted to you," so stated our President of the General Federation, Mrs. Sippel, to Mrs. Land. The survey of our club was managed so efficiently by Mrs. A. H. Hilker and Mrs. Ed Smith,, reporting three hundred and twenty five homes with only fifteen accidents.
We have been highly commended for rendering a distinct service for our community by sponsoring the ap- pearance of the St. Olaf Choir. Many have said it was a real cutstanding community service; and we did not
1 forget the colored people of our city as the Choir appear- ed at the Columbia Heights High School Auditorium, and many letters of appreciation were received.
Our finances have been at a very low ebb, especial- ly since paying brokerage et cetera, in consequence of the loan of thirty thousand dollars made by the Jef- ferson Standard Life Insurance Company. As many of you know, we have paid Mrs. Laura Tise Kern the sum of thirty thousand dollars, this being the balance due on our Club House. This sum we were able to pay by re-financing through the Jefferson Standard Life Insurance Company. -1
For replenishing our depleted treasury we are much encouraged over the prospects of a substantial sum to be realized from our Year Book, new memberships, entertainments, lectures et cetera.
Our total receipts last year was $4,261.77 and the disbursements $3,819.01. Of this amount collected one hundred dollars was a gift and a little over a thous- and dollars in dues. Many of the members were late in paying dues, so could not be counted i n this years work. The residue was earned by real hard work by the club members; following is a list of the ways and means of earning this money :
In November we had one day at Van Dyke's, when club members had entire charge of the store. It was a very profitable day, our share being $203 dollars, and club members reporting a day of pleasure as well as work. Then we were in charge of the Downtown Garage for three days, receiving a percent of all purchases made, and we made $90.45. The American Homes de- partment assisted in giving a demonstration at D. G. Craven Company, receiving $18.78. This department al- so registered names of customers and visitors at Hunt- ley-Hill-Stockton Co., realizing $191. in this way. From: the efforts of the loyal workers of the Fair Booth we ' received $305. In assisting McKaughr Dry Cleaning Company in advertising we received $28.00. -
The Garden department had a sale of crackers and made $18.78. The Art and Literature department con- tributed $20.00 to the Building fund. Proceeds from the St. Olaf's Choir was $491.67.
We had another day at Van Dyke's in March and received $100 for our efforts. Another feature of the club work was a series of Contract Bridge lessons, given by Mrs. Phin Horton, Sr. This proved to be quite a success socially as well as financially, our pro-

Clinica
fits from this being $29.50. During this series of les- sons delightful refreshments were served after each les- son, through the courtesy of the Quality Bakeries, and we appreciate the generous supply of cakes and cookies given us each week by Mr. Rawls of the Quality Baker- ies. The Blue Ribbon Ice Cream Company contribut- ed ice cream several times during our series of lectures. We assisted the Warner Flooring Company for three days, exhibiting their complete line of floor cover- ing. For this co-operation the Warner Flooring Com- pany gave us a beautiful pattern of inlaid linoleum for the kitchen and back hall of the Club House.
It would take too much space to tell you of the many other ways we have made money to meet our current expenses. You will realize from the above how the Chairman of every department has worked, and each department has contributed to the building fund. It has been a real pleasure to work with our loyal club women, they have given of themselves and their time in making a success of the different projects the Club has undertaken. If the Club has made progress. it has certainly been due to the combined efforts and co-opera- tion of the members.
DEPARTMENTAL WORK
1
Our departmental work has been exceptionally good this past year. The feature of the American Homes de- partment, under the leadership of Mrs. A. L. Googe, for the year, was the "live at Home Dinner," in co- operation with the County Federation of Women's Clubs. The dinner was unique in that it was the first time in the history of Forsyth, that the women of Forsyth County and of Winston-Salem had assembled in a pro- ject of this kind. Falling in line with Governor Gard- ner's plan, this dinner was made possible by the untir- ing efforts of Mrs. Googe and Mrs. Sills of the Ameri- can Homes department, Mrs. Andrew Mickle, first Vice- President and Miss Alice McQueen of the County Home Demonstration Board also many of the women from the County Federation, Miss Tinder, of the High School. also Miss Mather, with a splendid group of high school girls. who were so kind as to serve the dinner so effi- ciently. We feel we are developing a spirit of co-opera- tion and understanding between the women of the city and their rural sisters. Also many interesting speakers have helped make a success of this department.
